Derek if it wasn't for this game review then I wouldn't been playing the game or reading the comic book Scott Pilgrim. Take it as a thanks from both me and my brother.
I always thought Clash of Demonhead was based on an anime back in the 80's, the style do look a bit like Yatterman or Skullman, as Bang design looks like those late 70's manga character with the spiky messy hair, a facial scar.
I was wondering, since some time has passed have you played scott pilgrim vs the world the game? It could take up an episode itself and is a very great homage to 8 bit gaming.
@outofthebo i think that's a mega man reference as despite mega mans hair being black, it was always blue during animated cut scenes, i could be wrong tho
I just found this game today at my local game retailer. I haven't been able to spend that much time with it yet (I have some college work to get through first) but I like it so far. Also some numbnuts decided to plaster stickers all over the cartridge and etch "property of Mega Video" into the plastic... twice.
2:27 the blue hair is probably a reference to 'MegaMan', because in the game the sprites show his hair black but in anime-like cutscenes his hair is blue.
@lophatjello dont listen to People who dont know what they are saying ^^ your great and you know it!
btw tell me the Sweet home game is only meant for People who got some Seriously good Willpower and a Brain Strong enough to Shield off Terrible imagintion since that game is meant to be seriously Fucked up. the only modern games i have seen that scare the hell out of you is amnisea (i hope i spelled that correctly) and Call of Cathulu. Hope you respond cause your awesome!!!
They should remake this game...more of a remastering or reimagining to give it better graphics but keep the story in place. just to make it more visually appealing...ATTACK!
Holy Hell! I never realized Ron Jeremy ran the Super Shop. I've played both this and Metal Storm. Both good and over looked games like you said. The anti-gravity feature in Metal Storm really rocked my socks off considering I came from a Contra background.
Thanks to your show, I learned about this game and I'm happy to say I found a copy of it at a flea market in perfect condition for a dollar. I picked it up and haven't been happier, thanks hvgn!
Nice review. I'm all for bringing attention to such a great game such as Clash at Demonhead. Such a staple from my childhood. If anyone is interested in a few videos in a Let's Play/walkthrough fashion, head over to my channel and check out my C@D playthrough.
This game was part of my childhood growing up, and I loved it to pieces. It was my favorite NES game out of all the ones I had (and I still own all my NES games, by the way) growing up. Over the years, I've liked other NES games more than this one, but it still ranks up in my top 10. Thanks for reviewing one of my favorite NES games and giving it the recognition it deserves.
Be sure to also check out Vic Tokai's Battle Mania series. It made a cameo appearance in one of Sega's last Dreamcast games, Segagaga. It might be comparable to Capcom's Forgotten Worlds, Natsume's Final Mission, but I heard its quite as good as Treasure's Gunstar Heroes.
Yes, Bang has blue hair according to the Japanese front cover of the game, but I think due to the NES's limited capabilities, Vic Tokai chose black instead of blue.
I assume Doropie / Krion Conquest, and Time Dominator 1st / Socket, both by Vic Tokai, were paying homage to Mega Man+Ninja Gaiden and Sonic. Ripping off isn't always bad. Capcom ripped off the 1984 Karate Champ and 1985 Yie Ar Kung-Fu to create Street Fighter, and specifically the Double Dragon II arcade to create Final Fight.
lol this reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad I would physically map out the levels in the game "Air Fortress" so we could get out before they came crashing down
Man ages ago I couldn't decided to watch scott prilgrim the movie first or the game and its been going on to early 2011 so I downloaded the game and holy damn holy damn this is the funnest brawling multiplayer local and online game I've ever played since SSBB
And the Movie was pure gold, it was a lil slow to get straight to the fights but dammit I'd still watch this film from start to finish again and again.
I like river city ransom and I bought the scott pilgrim game based on that as well as being a fan of the animator the game though good is extremely short and there were a few far superior indie games that came out that year for cheaper. The film, the books and the fans of it piss me off though, but they aren't nearly as bad as portal fans.
Great episode. Might I also add that Metric was Bryan Lee O'Malley's inspiration for the look of Clash at Demonhead, which is why Edgar Wright and his brilliance went and asked Metric for a song for Clash at Demonhead, Black Sheep being a song they just made that they didn't feel fit their upcoming album, so they offered it to Wright and it surprisingly fit very well with the scene it would be used for.
I've watched a really bad Thai adaptation of Kamen Rider, called Kung Fu Riders, last week. But while watching it, I couldn't help but thinking of Clash at Demonhead. The cheesy acting, the seemingly unconnected plot and most of all the hillarious villains. It felt wrong with Kamen Rider, but I'm SO sure it would feel horribly right with Clash at Demonhead!
Forget Street Fighter and Double Dragon. There's ONE game that would look awesome as a cheap kung fu b-movie and you're looking at it! ^^
@xxc3lld4m4gexx a personal favorite of mine; it's the cave music from the NES port of Rygar. in fact, all music that appears after 9:40 is from Rygar.
I unfortunately bought this game after seeing this review, and couldn't get quite as into it as you did Derek. :( Maybe I need to try again after I get over my recent Shatterhand and Jackal obsession.
Like the Between The Buried And Me poster, as I've said a dozen times in the past. Hahaha
@chosentonessournotes oh, sorry. usually this game is dirt cheep, hope it didn't cost you too much! to be fair, i told fans a couple times over the years i wasn't going to review this game because I didn't think it was that great. it even took me a couple tries before I "got" clash at demonhead
@lophatjello No worries bud. It only cost me $3, and as soon as I posted that comment, I decided to give it another shot. I am liking it a little more than usual, I'm just having a hard time figuring out what to do at points. But as you've said, walkthroughs are making the task easier.
Then again, you recommended Journey To Silius, Metal Storm, StarTropics (had it, your review just made me wanna finish!), and Little Nemo. You were spot on with those. I still play through JtS from time to time.
@lophatjello Also, I've seen clips of Shatterhand in your intros... Here's to hoping we see a review for that awesome game! Even if it is fucking hard. Hahaha
@StarrFOX64 I always see Shatterhand in the intros to his videos, so maybe! Shatterhand, Shadow Of The Ninja, Abadox... Natsume RULED in the NES days.
@ChaosKittens Its a reference to scott pilgrim as in one of the chapters, Scott tried to tell Ramona he loves her but got tongue-tied and said "I think i'm in lesbians with you."
I grew up with this game. The soundtrack was part of those happy memories I still have. Whilst I was little at the time and barely understood the story, what I really enjoyed was the various suits you could wear. Speed Boots, the Armor Body. Now that I'm older however, and can still remember a lot of the twists (shockingly), they really make my hair stand on end, even at today's standards.
It was a fun, goofy game, with plenty of character. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.
@paulalane100 in lesbians its a quote from Scot Pilgrim when he fucks up telling Romona he is in love with her he says "im in lesbians with you" to his girlfriend
Of course, I can't agree on the fact Magical Doropie a.k.a. Krion Conquest is horrible, considering the fact they've made it much worse in the US version, but still... great review man. I like it.
As I am missing out on this game, you are definitely missing out on the Scott Pilgrim game. Also, like this game, it's not perfect but it's damn good, but it's better after reading the books.
HaHa. I was just gonna fave and move on. But the last joke made me happy. So I'm telling you that. heh. Your Auto-Awesome. I enjoy all your videos and might as well tell you here. What was that twitter again?
Nice giant headphones. You'd better be getting the best sound quality ever out of those things, that's the only excuse you could have for wearing something that ridiculous.
Wait... you have the Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack on your iPod, right? So does that mean you have a track on your iPod titled, "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl?"
@applemetatin1 You see the difference is that while Derek is influenced by the AVGN, he does not rip him off. Another clear difference between Derek and the Irate Hack is that Derek is actually funny. So please take your fanboyism elsewhere, and stop being such a fucking idiot.
i never use walkthroughs thers no point playing the game its fun trying to find wat to do and i hate the people who use walkthroughs for puzzles in alundra and zelda etc
@devilkhan8 I agree solving puzzles yourself can be fun and fulfilling, but I don't get why you are so strongly against using FAQ's, I used an FAQ when playing the original legend of zelda because I didn't want to go burn down every bush in the game just to find a few pieces of heart. I use fire emblem faq's to check growth rates and the author's opinion of characters (which can be fun if they are really bad).
I agree that reading an faq can be detrimental to the experience, but not always is.
@devilkhan8 I think it's fine that you enjoy that. But that is taste and playstyle. If I don't have the patience to do that, there is no reason why I should. There is no right way to play a single player game. I'm not trying to say you're wrong for not using FAQ's, but it is wrong to hate people who use FAQ's (although you probably don't really hate them) That's like saying you hate the people who use the superguide, even though the superguide is precisely what allows the game to be made harder
you know what games i like??? not the good obscure ones that i've never played before but the ones that bring me back memories of what i was doing at a certain time and age... i guess for me its not gaming in itself but the nostalgic factor together... that to me is retro gaming magic.
that game looks awesome but not my style but the chartator looks like goku and he has a scar like yamcha just wanted to say that. video games are awesome dragonballs awesome have a great day/night

Nice giant headphones. You'd better be getting the best sound quality ever out of those things, that's the only excuse you could have for wearing something that ridiculous.

2:32 Gotta disagree there, the movie, while nice to look at, was not very good.

Wait... you have the Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack on your iPod, right? So does that mean you have a track on your iPod titled, "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl?"

:S Excuse me???
werotus 1 year ago
@applemetatin1 You see the difference is that while Derek is influenced by the AVGN, he does not rip him off. Another clear difference between Derek and the Irate Hack is that Derek is actually funny. So please take your fanboyism elsewhere, and stop being such a fucking idiot.

Please, please do Grim Fandango! Innovative story, unique score, fun gameplay, Tim Shaffer, and it's criminally underrated. Please!

i never use walkthroughs thers no point playing the game its fun trying to find wat to do and i hate the people who use walkthroughs for puzzles in alundra and zelda etc
NOTE: if you find it to hard don't play it
devilkhan8 1 year ago
@devilkhan8 I agree solving puzzles yourself can be fun and fulfilling, but I don't get why you are so strongly against using FAQ's, I used an FAQ when playing the original legend of zelda because I didn't want to go burn down every bush in the game just to find a few pieces of heart. I use fire emblem faq's to check growth rates and the author's opinion of characters (which can be fun if they are really bad).
I agree that reading an faq can be detrimental to the experience, but not always is.
sharkjack 1 year ago
@sharkjack ok maybe i sound a bit against it..... ok alot but the point is i enjoy trying to burn down evry bush etc.
devilkhan8 1 year ago
