Can't thank you enough for this! She was a warm, friendly voice on the air (and on the phone, which she always answered) and she played lots of Floyd. Even in that time and place she was one in a million. Thank you Night Bird, RIP.
Woe unto Howard if he is mocking her out. I wouldn't want to have that low life's karma. He's going to have to pay for every rotten nasty thing he has ever said. Just wait and see ......
Good Lord, what memories that voice brings back! Lying in bed at night, listening to her as a schoolboy, before I fell to sleep. Remember "The Goodie Box? Alison would play stuff from a new release, and describe the cover for her listeners - the stores would not have the albums for days or even weeks. I can specifically remember her describing Joni Mitchell's "For The Roses" and the Rolling Stones' album "Goat's Head Soup". What a wonderful woman!
Grew up listening to WNEW-FM..loved it so much, I landed a job at WNEW TV....Pete Fornatele, Vince Scalia, can still be heard on both Sirius and Fordam University Radio thru iTunes
i don't know how i stumbled upon all this but i have been listening and searching all day long about wnew-fm archives and am fullof tears in my eyes and just want to say thanks to those who preserved all this nostalgia and it is so sad the world will never be entertained or enchanted by the likes of wnew air peronalities ever again
Yes yes yes...this audio clip takes me back to the Jersey shore in the 70's...I always listened to Alison Steele in my high school days and my siblings all did too...she was really something else...a welcome break from Cousin Brucie, but HE had his own style too which I still appreciate and played great lead-in music.
She was a very nice woman. I uses to pick her up in my cab at the radio station, on 46 St. just East of 5th Ave. at 2:00 AM, after her show. She would sit in the front seat, and we would just talk about stuff. She lived on 72 St. between 1 & York Ave. I moved to Vegas in 1980 and we lost touch. I miss her. RIP Allison.
Alison also ran a "cat" store on the East Side of Manhattan, the name was simple, can't remember it at the moment though. Listening to her late at night was like an "out of body" experience and certainly made you think, if you put your mind into it. Thankfully we have these types of websites to recall this type of nostalgia. Compared to today's JUNK on the radio, well, there is NO comparison, WNEW-FM was a great radio station, that I listened to loyally. Miss it much! :-(
She was such a great radio personality and was complimented many times on her deep, dark sexy voice. Her and Scott Muni are hanging out up there listening to Pete Fornatale, Dennis Elsas, Dave Herman, Jonathan Schwartz, Vinny Scelsa ~ ~ ~
New-FM was my first exposure to FM and the discovery of album trax,, when I moved from AM ,, ( WA-BEATLES-C) many nites Alison Steele and Rosco would be in my ear as I went to sleep,, classic free form radio that we'll never see again
For those, like me, who miss the once-great '70s-era WNEW, go to WFUV 90.7 where Dennis Elsas, Pete Fornatale, and Vin Scelsa are now working. It's a cool non-commercial college station (Fordham Univ) with eclectic old and new mix, very much like WNEW back then. You can also get a live feed off their website. Mon-Fri it's the best radio station, but weekends are an odd mix of formats, sports etc.
At least here in the NYC area, WNEW, 102.7 FM, was clearly "the" rock station in the 70s. The best djs played the best music. Nothing comes close to it today. Our loss.
Incredible voice & talent. I worked with Alison once in 1981 & her voice was that beautiful in person. Making fun of her is only embellishing your own ignorance. She was a lady & I will defend her memory. Everyone I knew had their radios tuned to Alison at 10PM-2AM every night. Especially the beginning of her show. They talked about it the next morning. Stern is like Olberman -- their talent is Ridicule. Capital R. A real shame. They always aim at the wrong targets.
Alison's voice!! Back in the late 60s to mid-70s every radio I had was tuned to 102.7. Free-form radio - the DJs could play what they wanted, and every BIG rock name stopped by their studio. They turned me on to some music I love to this day. Anyone else remember Scott Muni's weekly "Things From Britain"? The night they broadcast Bruce LIVE from the Bottom Line in '75? "Born to Run" hadn't been released. I still have that tape. RIP Alison, Scott, and THE BEST FM station in New York City. EVER.
@vmt1 DJs played what they wanted? Really? You think that? WRONG! I've been in radio 40 years and you NEVER play what you want. You play what you are told to play. Even back then my friend.
@Jazmckay I don't doubt your knowledge of the radio industry, but if you listened to WNEW back in the late 60's-early 70's, I think you'd know that the "play what you're told" format definitely didn't apply With Alison Steele doing the late night-early morning or overnight shifts, she was even more free to play what she and her listeners wanted. When she resurfaced as the overnight DJ on WXRK, she mixed her own faves with MANY listener requests, including mine. She loved the Moody Blues.:)
@Jazmckay Wrong. Jonathan Schwartz and Alison played what they wanted, when they wanted to. They defined FM AOR freeform radio. Your tone leaves much to be desired. Don't know what 5K watt peashooter you were on, but obviously, it was not an education outlet.
Allison Steele was a real pioneer and changed the way we appreciated FM rock stations in the late 60's, early 70's. I was one of her faithful listeners just driving around in my '67 Fairlane with the stereo on. Really good memories.
I had the pleasure of meeting Allison in NYC once at the Hard Rock, took some real nice photo' together. What a class act she was ! Priceless memories from my teenage years !
I remember that, too. Radio was great in the 70s. There was AM for excellent Top 40 radio, until programmers ruined it by flooding the airwaves with disco in the late 70s. On FM, we heard outstanding progressive rock music played by talented and knowledgeable personalities. Then the idiots in suits ruined that as well.
I loved her voice. She also was on WNEW-AM in the '70s and '80s playing big band records. Sad to say, that station disappeared and the 1130khz frequency became an all-financial news station.
Can't thank you enough for this! She was a warm, friendly voice on the air (and on the phone, which she always answered) and she played lots of Floyd. Even in that time and place she was one in a million. Thank you Night Bird, RIP.

If you listened to radio back in the late sixties and early seventies it didn't get any better than Alison Steele.

I was a fan of Alison Steele. Her approach was surreal. She is missed. Rest in peace, Nightbird.
