For all Edgar Allen Poe Fans please read! I made an amatuer 30 minute film over the summer based of Poes story The Masque of the Red Death, where the Red Death returns in modern times. I hope to get more views on my movie so come check it out if you would like. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks! :)
This movie could go either way. The director did V for Vendetta, which was much more than an action flick, and Ninja Assassin.... It all depeneds on whether or not they wrote a script that functions as a real mystery in the Poe tradition or used his stories as gimmicks for gory scenes. Cusack's involvement is promising.
First he waters down Alan Moore's awesome graphic novel and now McTeigue is going to dumb down Edgar Allan Poe's classics. The man needs to be stopped.
@WarriorOfDream Well it's not precisely about The Raven. It is based from some of his other most famous writings too. Regardless I'm deff gonna go see it.
Poems of all time, yet he is far from being one of the greatest poets of all time. Shakespeare, Dickinson, and Milton are recognized as some of the greatest poets. Poe is far more recognized for his short stories then his poetry.
First off, Poe didn't go mad or depressed until the death of his wife, Poe only married once, and died shortly after. Second, none of this really happened. This is a fictional account based off all of his mystery stories. Third, Poe is not considered one of the greatest poets of all time, but one of the greatest short story authors. He is accredited for founding the mystery and thriller genres, and for creating the format of the short story. He is also accredited for writing one of the greatest
@Cursed13HAHAHA To add to that, he also basically founded the horror/gothic genre as well. Edgar Allen Poe is one of my favorite authors, and I can't wait to see this in theatres.
@723hope actually the founding of horror is accredited to H.P. Lovecraft and the founding of the gothic genre was accredited to Horace Walpole. Edgar Allan Poe is accredited with the founding of weird fiction.
@MachdieAugenzu1721 Judging by the release of the trailer I say November-December Most likely December because maybe they are going to release than because in the poem it's suppose to be december
Ahhhh oh my god!!!! Im so excited!!!!!!! Can't wait!!! I've read every single Edgar Allan Poe short story!!! Can't wait to see which ones are in the movie!!!!!! XD :3 :3

@sprinkleicious Really? Watch your language, learn how to spell, learn how to type, and go to school to learn grammar. Also, I seriously doubt that you have read and/or understood and of Poe's works. And chill with the caps.
This has a lot of promise; of course Poe's stories are beautifully rich. However... I don't know how I feel about one of the greatest poets of all time being turned into, more or less, an action flick. Might have been better if it was just adaptations of his stories, but... we'll see.
We watched this trailer in my reading class today! xD it was amazing! we are secretly planning and after school field trip to see it when it comes out! haha!
@MrFunsocks ahaha, MrFunsocks i really wish i knew who you are so that i can give you a high five for that clever comment you got there. and additionally an outstanding username.
Looks like it has a lot of potential! I remember, The Pit and the Pendulum was the very first Poe short story I read, so that particular part stood out to me...
@OprahIsMyGod A famous author who was actually a messed up person is represented as a good looking hollywood hero starring in a fictional plot where what he writes becomes what he's actually living. The only difference between this and Shakespeare in Love is like I said, this is a murder mystery.
As someone who has extensively studied and enjoyed Poe's work, I'm really excited to see this. To the people complaining about the misrepresentation of Poe - this movie is clearly an homage to his work, not him. His "character" is obviously not supposed to be the literal Poe, but rather the implied author (or potentially even the reader-as-Poe). I like that the story is something other than a biography or a recap of his short stories. This has the potential to bomb, but also to be artistic.
@cloudedreason I really really hope you're right! I'm massive Poe fangirl too and five minutes after discovering this film I'm completely torn between abject indignant horror, and excited optimism. I don't know which one to settle into >.<
@TheRaevyn Only one way to find out I guess. This looks like one for the theaters for sure though. I'll probably splurge for the big screen, for better or worse. I guess going in hopeful and skeptical at the same time is safe?
....nah fuck it, I think I'll just be excited. If it's a let down, it at least can't be worse than what Nic Cage did to Wicker Man.
I hope this movie is as over the top as it looks. If it is I might really enjoy it. If not, and they go really serious it will probably be lame. But i don't know
Wasn't Poe British. Either way, John Cusack is still awesome.
Whether or not you think the movie looks "historically accurate" is besides the point. Movies are made to entertain and excite us, hence why directors and actors and screenwriters take artistic liberties.
This looks awful. The fact that the trailer has 140 likes is just downright depressing. The fact that this has a March 9th release date should tell you that it's going to be garbage. They should have just gone all out with the absurdity and have Poe slaying zombies or vampires. Or come up with an original idea that wasn't Sleepy Hollow meets Castle.
@masterdaddy0 What the fuck are you talking about? I said the fact that 140 people think this looks good is depressing. I'm saying that people should be smarter than this. Apparently, they're not. And if you're going to call me retarded, get your "you're"/"your" right.
@fizzygillespie What does the release date have to do with anything? It's obvioius from the trailer that the movie is already, or is almost already, completely finished. Just because they were able to keep production under wraps doesn't mean it's going to be crap.
Mustaches and beards are not the same thing. I never would have posted this comment if I didn't know what I'm talking about. I'm a Poe impersonator, for shit sake. I do a one man Poe play. This is fact. Poe had a mustache, and he only had it in the last year of his life. HE NEVER HAD A BEARD.
I'm glad they're finally making films based on Edgar Allen Poe and his work...And although I don't really like John Cusack as Poe (I've always imagined Johnny depp or Orlando Bloom), I am nonetheless excited for this.
I'm not hating, but why would they fictionalize his life like this? Edgar's life was so tortuous, morbid, and intriguing, they should just make a high-budget flick about that, not some fictitious flick that disrespects, in my opinion, his incredible memory.
This is horrible. Where in the hell is the southern accent? Poe grew up in Virginia. He NEEDS a Southern accent. And he NEVER ... I repeat NEVER in his life ... HAD A BEARD OR GOATEE OF ANY KIND.
@MrDabblehand I'm sorry, but just because you grow up in Virginia doesn't mean you have a southern accent. I live in Virginia and I don't have a southern accent. And yeah, Poe may have lived 200 years ago but again, that doesn't mean he had a southern accent.
Oh my Goth, wanna see this so bad! It seems like I've been waiting my whole life for a movie like this! I know this will be a masterpiece! It'd be even better if they would release it on Edgar Allan Poe's 203rd birthday on January 19th!
@TheLivingIn3D My theater normally doesn't offer a choice between the two. If it was *filmed* to be shown in 3D, then that is another matter entirely and I have seen some awesome 3D movies (My Bloody Valentine and Avatar).
Cusack is one hell of an actor which is reason enough to go see this. The fact that he is one of the most amazing American social heroes of our time makes me even more excited to see it!
