  • squirell1952! Boy! Are you having a bad day!

  • AND FINALLY: The poor unfortunate man to be the last man to be hanged in IRELAND was hanged in the early 1960s. Apparently, he had murdered a policeman in the Six Counties (or UK) part of the Province. But isn't it nice to know we no longer have death sentences. Violence begets violence.

  • JUST BECAUSE WE SOUTHERN IRISH ARE NOT A PHYSICAL COLONY OF ENGLAND DOES NOT MEAN THAT NORTHERN IRELAND IS SOMEHOW LESS IRISH THAN WE. ECONOMICALLY, THE SOUTH IS VERY MUCH AN ENGLISH COLONY. AND ULSTER IS VERY, VERY IRISH, CULTURALLY SPEAKING. HOW DARE WE SUGGEST OTHERWISE. ONLY AN IGNORAMUS DOESN'T KNOW HIS OWN GEOGRAPHY. SORRY, I DIDN'T MEAN TO CALL ANYONE AN IGNORAMUS. I MEAN TO CALL THEM FUCKING IGNORAMUSES. AND THICKS.

I'M FROM THE SOUTH, BY THE WAY. COUNTY BLAW CLEE, IN FACT.

  • A LOT OF ILL-INFORMED SOUTHERN IRISH PEOPLE WILL TELL YOU THE LAST MAN TO BE HANGED IN IRELAND WAS A GUY CALLED MANNING IN 1954. HE WASN'T!! THE LAST MAN TO BE HANGED IN IRELAND WAS AN ULSTERMAN AND HE WAS HANGED AT THE CRUMLIN ROAD JAIL, BELFAST. BOTH ULSTER AND BELFAST ARE IN IRELAND, ARE THEY NOT? IT IS NOTHING SHORT OF FUCKING IGNORANCE TO SUGGEST THEY'RE NOT IRISH. ULSTER IS OUR OLDEST PROVINCE SO HOW COULD THEY NOT BE IRISH. THE SOUTH IS LESS IRISH THAN ULSTER. GET THAT INTO THE HEAD

  • thanks for this my mum and dad are from aughavas leitrim, greetings from county luton.have you got any info on the daironoi tribe or 4 books of fergin

  • Many thanks Barry. There's been a great reaction to it. Hope you can spread the word.

    Ronan

  • This is really good... an excellent film, Ronan. I always enjoy your selections so much! You do an outstanding job! Suze

  • Many thanks Suze. Shot this a few miles from my home. Mac Diarmada was an extraordinary revolutionary who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

  • looks like a great place to visit.

  • You wont regret it if you do and you'd be very welcome!

  • Great short film let us know more about Ireland !

    Excellent 5*

    Ronan

  • 5☆5☆5☆5☆5☆tars from: Smi-ren-ger!.....

  • Many thanks for the 'stellar' response smirenger! Good to hear from you again. Hope you can spread the word.

    RonanG

  • I watched this again and compliment you on producing a different kind of film to the usual short on events like this. I loved the absence of the usual 'talking heads', where the puffed-up and pompous often insert themselves. I learned a lot, and will consider being there next year. I can feel the wind whistling around that empty landscape.

Now, how about a film on Gralton?

  • Thanks Wheelsofire for your comments. Much appreciated. Definitely a good idea to do a doc on Gralton. An extraordinary man indeed.

  • Another excellent vid! :)

  • Many thanks for watching and for your comments Sam.

  • Very good part of History thanx for the lesson my Friend

    >>>Sherif

  • You are very welcome Sherif.

  • Good stuff Ronan.

  • Many thanks Daniel. Thanks for dropping by.

  • This man Sean MacDiarmada deserves a statue on O'Connell Street.

  • He has a nice one in Kiltyclougher though!

  • 'What do we want?

    Political Statues!'

  • Absolutely brilliant

  • Many thanks Joseph. Saw your McDiarmada tribute earlier which is why I sent you this. I agree, men like McDiarmada and the idealism and leadership they displayed is sadly lacking in today's political stage where it could be argued, they are most needed.

  • Ronan,

Explain, was this part of the orgination of the IRA?

  • In 1916 Ireland was still under the rule of the British Empire. Mc Diarmada and others such as Pearse and Connolly decided that the only way to oust them was through a military uprising. This right to bear arms against occupying forces in Ireland was the basis for the IRA's subsequent military campaign from the 1950's to present day in Northern Ireland which is still under British rule.

Good to see you back at YT.

  • Hi - Thanks for the video. I'm from Drumkeerin in North leitrim and am always on the lookout for stuff like this. I've lived in New York City the past 10 years, never been home since, watching this makes me wanna take a trip back!

  • You are welcome gunnerglory. Lived in NY in the 70s myself and know the feeling. There's a few more films on my channel you might like to check out if you do get homesick, or even sick of home! 'Spirit' is one filmed up Drumkeerin way which might do the trick. Let me know if it does.

    Ronan

    Mohill

  • i had no idea who he was until this film and then looking him up on google. he was young. 33.

    michael

  • As they say, thirty three, the age of crucifixion.

  • great history thanks for sharing =) 5* Love from Scotland

  • You're welcome Paul. Thanks for taking time to watch it and for the 5 Stars!

  • Very interesting Ronan

  • Many thanks. May we live in interesting times.

  • Thanks for clearing that up. Shoulda gone to Specsavers, I guess. I like the film too, and we could do with leaders who have ideals like Connolly and SMcD rather than focus groups and cynicism. But don't forget how the people allowed Dev deport Jim Gralton, another Leitrim radical.

  • I always watch in HQ.

    Osama

  • Not sure I'm with you Osama!

  • Under your inttro you say 'Watch in HQ''

    Should that be HD?

  • No. The HQ button stands for High Quality. It is on the bottom right side of the player. High definition is actually a different format, requiring HD cameras to film with.

  • The Osama crack was meant to refer to the great fugitive watching in his cave headquarters. Pretty stupid, now I think of it.

  • Interesting stuff

  • Thanks for watching. History is always interesting.

  • Thanks Justin.

  • Good job RonanG.

  • Many thanks ladies. Glad you liked it.

  • Excellent short film...Keep up the good work mo chara..

  • Many thanks for Fav and comments! Will try to.

  • Another fine film. Ronan

  • Many thanks Justin. I see you're painting a lot these days. Some great stuff too.

  • Great video, some nice information on one of Irelands greatest men.

  • Many thanks Darren. Much appreciated.
