The anti-slavery act of 1807 was focused firmly on slavery being wrong, and when the civil war broke out Britain began importing its cotton from Egypt and India, for lower prices.

The North didn't start the war. The South did, over slavery, as they freely and proudly said at the time in their Cornerstone Speech and Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina declarations of secession. All anyone needs to do is read them.

The North was the good side. Every single Northern state peacefully and voluntarily abolished slavery. Every Southern state seceded and murdered American soldiers to try to preserve their "cornerstone" of slavery and racism until the end of time, then imposed another 100 years of segregation, until Northern guns ended that, too. Like the Allies in WWII, the North wasn't perfect by today's standards, but they were a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

It was fought because of slavery and the vast sectional differences it caused. The Union wanted to preserve the United States. Slavery was economically favorable for both sides until the Union attacked the South. The Union just wanted to prove its supremacy, though the South gave them a beating to remember.
