Someone made a claim that these are out of production. Strictly speaking, there's no more Moog modular synths being made, but there ARE other modular synths. Including a company who's modules could be consider Moog clones.
I have used both software and analog hardware over the last 10 years, and I will say this. I rather have analog than vst's anyday. You cannot beat the hands on control, the immediacy, and the sound. I cant say I ever have fun programming a vst like i do a real analog synth. I only have a 22 space dot com, but I still want an Arp 2600 or Minimoog, Moog Modular if i became a multimillionare :c)
there is no debate- computer and va analogs software do a good job but nothing beats analog - especially analog recording- digital is flawed by its perfection- true analog flucuates- like life- digital is static and predictable- where analog isnt- for techno dnb va and software is fine- but for old school electronica prog pop and rock analog is essential- my setup is all analog now after years of having both- and my ears and music thank me for it
I don't think anything can go through a computer chip and sound better than something that goes through less of a computer chip, or no computer chip at all.
Perfection is boring. Imagine if all the people in the world were identical. That is what chips produce, far more uniformity than I want to be involved with. I prefer character because it sounds more natural to me.
Out of interest can this not be done in software or is the sound quality miles apart? I guess the laptop speakers I'm using aren't great but on this platform it does sound quite similiar to a software vsti.
@triumphthruxton I believe a VST through software Emulates what an Analog can do in real. So in reality, you get all the Electrons and all the variations through Physical elements in the circuitry of an Analog system, as with software, it shapes that same kind of "Path" but you don't get that trueness to it (for lack of a better word). It mimics it and converts it to a digital 1010101's that the computer can calculate w/effects etc, and puts the stream of 101010's out to the sound card 4U2 hear.
@triumphthruxton Yes, and if you go further into the past there was no debate yet, because any software was still far from acheiving something closely similar. ^^
@maccagrabme Similar, but not the same. IMO, no plug in nails that vintage analog sound... even modern analog hardware doesn't, but that doesn't mean it's not good, just not the same. However, for me, the ease of use and cost makes software modulars win out. The best, IMO, is Vaz Modular, however Arturia, U-he, and Tassman make ones that are good in their own ways. I do also have synths by DSI, Yamaha and Studio Electronics for the real deal.
@maccagrabme if you compare analog to digital (VST) you will notice analog has a much more "fat" sound, and alot of the synths blend together better. VST can accomplish something similar to this, but it takes alot more processing and effects to get it right. so pros to VST: simple and easy are easy to patch (really none at all) cons:kinda tinny or "fake" sounding. and the analog is oppisite of this.
@codemsan i can imagine alot of that having to do with the fact that a pc normally doesnt have very great speakers and any real synth requires an amp or loudspeakers
@maccagrabme of course you can but you're missing the point. This kit is as close as K/bd players can get to owning a vintage Gibson or a Strat. Us giutarists lnow a PRS or a Tyler are way better, but we do hang onto what we have. Wakeman would be blown away by your prowess I'm sure as I am. That farty noise is awesome. Totally Moog
@maccagrabme: It’s the physical tweaking an patching that makes the real instruments stand out, among other things. There are some good emulations of analog instruments, though.
Who was the Industrial Designer of the modular Moogs anyway? Whoever it was deserves credit. Surely the Moogs were the best-looking of the various brands. Absolutely gorgeous to look at.
how mutch would one oy them run like thousands????

@EntrailSaunders they've been out of production since 1980. They run in the tens of thousands of dollars for a complete system these days.

hhmmm, i always wondered if modulars could even make music, cause you never really see songs with them, just silly noises, but this is pretty great

what a boring composition,
but shit the programming of the individual sounds are nothing short of modular majesty

This is what you can really call a sawtooth bass! This mother of all synths sounds so bombastic you would (and could) only need this thing alone.
