What the heck you gonna do if you're on a picnic and have an ice cream and the ants crawl on the ice cream, what are you gonna do? You're gonna eat the ants because it's made out of protein.
question question question ............ hey .. well i started induction .. and shit !!! i started doing high protein instead of high fat ... cz this is what i though of it :p
now that you have removed the misconception .. would u please tell me some website which provides recipies for "high fat, ketogenic diet" ... i googled myself but didnt find nothing........... i will be hightly thankful to you bro !
@dildatota You can search for Atkins Diet recipes, and you will likely find more recipes than you know what to do with. I have posted over 100 recipes on Youtube alone that are perfect for this diet. Another great site is Linda's Low Carb Recipe site.
@bowulf : hey bro .. thanks for replyin .. i just wanted to ask if the recipies on your channel are "induction friendly" .. cz it has to be strictly 20g.. and i will follow it blindly.. so are your recipeis induction free ?
another problem : i feel weak a lot on induction .. this is the reason i quit last time.. cz i have exams right now, i cant focus on studies when i just kill the carbs .. any insight on that ?
@dildatota The one's marked with (IF) in the title are Induction Friendly. Although you can over-eat an Induction Friendly recipe to make it not friendly (amount of vegetables, cream, cheese, etc.)
Chances are you are low on electrolytes like sodium and potassium. Try drinking PowerAde Zero or a salt substitute (like Morton NoSalt) on your food.

Oh hai! Have you tried cleverous 402 diet (do a google search)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my work buddy lost a ton of weight with it.
no one ever talks about protein shakes and induction I'm in induction, Im working out, and I'm donating plasma and losing protein and need to do shakes...can i just count the carbs? 6 grams carbs per 60 grams of protein, its a whey protein isolate
@utubeboob9 I actually just made a video on this topic - can you overeat on Atkins, called unimaginatively "Atkins Diet Quick Hits - Is it possible to overeat on Low Carb?" Check out that video, but the short answer is yes but it is difficult especially on Induction.
Utubeboob9, in addition to Kent's explanation, I also recommend the article - On The First Law of Thermodynamics by Barry Groves.
The gist is, "Actually, excess fats aren't stored in the body. Any unused fat calories are excreted in urine and faeces." With references.
There's a huge fat phobia in America and it's all pointless. Eating fat does not make you fat or clog your arteries. It's sugar, corn syrup and grains that make you fat and clog your arteries. The explanations would take pages.
Thank you very much sir. I really appreciate you clearing this up for the public. I am on high doses of prednisone for my ulcerative colitis. As a result I am endlessly hungry. I and hoping this atkins lifestyle can help curb this insatiable appetite.
@Subfightr Being on this diet was the first time I ever had my appetite satiated or felt like I could last between meals, so I hope you see the same thing with yours. Just make sure your fat intake is high.
@danhantheman I am unsure of the metabolic typing or the blood test diet as one indicate my best diet would be one of strictly grains and the other limits fat to high protein (40%) not high fat (30%).
@bowulf def go with the metabolic typing, the online official test. I've read about the blood type based diet, doesn't seem very reliable as there doesn't seem to be strong evidence of inherent differences in dietary needs due to diff blood antigen markers.
As for metab typing, it would never prescribe something such as high protein but low fat. the entire purpose is to stabilize your blood sugar based on how rapidly you metabolize diff macronutrients
this is because an extremely high protein diet actually is moderately insulin-triggering while fat is entirely not. also, even the most extreme diets such as the Inuit only eat 20-30% protein by calories (fat could be 70-80%!). There seems to be a ceiling on healthy protein intake among humans due to its toxicity for the kidneys i.e. what bodybuilders do is pretty unhealthy.
@danhantheman Correct, but this is contrary to what the metabolic typing diet for "high protein" classification promoted. It promoted a high protein rather than a high fat diet, which is again not what Atkins or ketogenic diets recommend. This may just be something similar to the multiple primal or paleo diets -- each recommending their own specific.
At this point, Atkins has been proven extremely healthy for me.
Just my 2 cents. I failed on the Atkins diet, but lost 83lbs on a high fiber diet. I also paid no attention to carbs and didn't exercise. No supplements either. Hope that helps?
@bowulf I don't mean to be negative. I just was frustrated by high protein diets. Especially because I had a business in which I basically exercised all day (moving business) and gained a ton of weight. Maybe this high protein diet only works for specific body types? If it worked for you and others I think that's great! Achieving the goal is all that matters in the end :)
@derekbanas Actually Atkins is a high fat not high protein diet. I think its effectiveness probably revolves more around tastes or what food one desires more so than specific type of body. To keep beating yourself up with food choices that you can't stand or aren't willing to cook conversion foods, the diet is probably not one for you whatever it is.
It would be like me trying to do a raw vegan diet. I may lose weight for awhile, but I'd hate it and life being on it.

sorry i didnt realize this was a job application had I realized that i may have given a shit about my grammar. Gluconeogenesis thanks for the misinformed education but I know what this is (new glucose being made). This results In muscle wastage as the protein being used as energy comes from muscle breakdown. I guess this wally is right and the acsm doh fsa nhs who and any decent sports nutritionist or dietitian is incorrect. You talk about evidence what do you think they go on? u r a turd!!
@Wrenchlar "any decent sports nutritionist or dietitian is incorrect"
Sorry you fail. There are a number of nutritionists that support a low carb plan, and the fact that the associations don't is a manner of politics and group think and perhaps not science. Go back to the studies to find out what is the truth, and the science backs the low carb approach.
Finally, I can tell your mom is proud of you and your language.
@Wrenchlar Not a job application, but if you are going to say "are you talking nonsense because your lack of carbs prevents your brain from functioning properly." You just might want to get your sh*t straight first. Just a clue...
As for gluconeogenesis, it is primarily from dietary protein not from muscle tissue especially not in protein deficit environment. Sorry you are just making this too easy to poke holes in your inadequate argument.
This is not anecdotal it is way way way more evidence based than the atkins diet. check out what the acsm fsa who doh and other big guns recommend. They don't make stuff up as they go along. Many Millions have lost fat eating higher carbs than fat and protein from running a Marathon or going to work without the essential fuel you need to move its going to be harder this is a nobrainer!
@Wrenchlar "Many Millions have lost fat eating higher carbs than fat and protein from running a Marathon or going to work without the essential fuel you need to move its going to be harder this is a nobrainer! "
Can I buy a punctuation for this rambling mess of a sentence? It is undecipherable as to what it's meaning is. How do you dispute the mounting evidence showing low carb diets more effective at weight loss and lean body preservervation than low fat plans?
carbs are a metabolic primer for fatloss if you don't have carbs you can't burn fat what will happen is that Protein which has to come from the breakdown of muscle tissue will be converted into carbs. Protein from intake can't be used as energy. are you talking nonsense because your lack of carbs prevents your brain from functioning properly. If you breakdown muscle tissue your metabolism goes down!
@Wrenchlar Sorry you are just wrong. Protein can be converted to glucose and thereby to energy through gluconeogenesis. As for carbs being needed for fat loss, ketogenic diets have been proven more successful for losing visceral fat than other diets.
So as for brain functioning properly, I point to the unreadability of your posts or the random capitalization of your second posts. Is your blood glucose spiking and preventing you from following basic grammar rules of capitalization?
@bowulf I am looking at the conversation here and I have to say the Keto diet worked well for me. The higher fat intake gave me heartburn but the fat came off without any effort. I combined it with interval running and weight lifting and it came off very quickly.
@bowulf lol every true, I have never been diabetic and never would want to. I have seen people injected themselves and taking blood samples. At the most I have only been about 30 lbs overweight after I got out of the Air Force. Its still amazing how places advertise low fat and add sugar lol. Take out fiber and add sugar. Take out natural sugar and add laboratory made corn syrup. So they offer all of these bad foods approved by the govt. and people like Obama's wife is like hey just don't eat it
@Wrenchlar dude you are rambling. You don't need any carbs at all. Studies have been done on the holocaust survivors decades later and their brains function normally. I have been on low carb/high protein diets while weight lifting and it works like a champ.
@Warpath2198 Er, holocost survivors kind of didn't get much of ANY food....I don't even want to know what they got. I refrain from comparing to such a horrific event. Instead...I prefer to use Inuit or Masai as examples of how people don't need any carbs at all. Anyways, this comment was 9 months ago, so maybe you wouldn't make such a comparison anymore anyway. Also, make sure your fat intake is high and protein intake is moderate...(based on your personal weight lifting goals). Good luck.
all the macro nutrients (protien carbs fats) do different jobs you need all 3 carbs are required in the largest amount of the 3 i have always eaten more carbs than proiten and fat and have 7% body fat.
@Wrenchlar No phase of the Atkins Diet has prevents you from eating from all three macronutrients. Carbs are not required in the largest amount as the function they perform can be provided by the other - used for fuel. In fact, fat is a more dense fuel source as well as being a source of essential fatty acids.
As for your ability to eat high carb and have 7% only is anecdotal. It does not make it prescriptive for others or universal. Not everyone is like you or has same daily routine.
Actually you do not need all three , you could live your whole life without carbs and you would be fine. E.g the inuit people live on a diet mainly of fatty meat and no carbs , and they are completely healthy. You can cut out carbs and live a healthy life , but cut out fat or protein and you will die.
so what fat is good fat ? like in cheese and eggs ? ive been doing atkins for 3 weeks and have lost 17 lbs but last few days have only lost 1lb and realised ive not had any fat just protein and less than 10 grams of carbs a day ..so guess i need to up the carbs back up to 20 and increase the fat ..im still doing induction and was feeling great last week but have been feeling tired again..guess this is because ive not been having any fat which i need for energy ? thank you
@sugarcube67 With only a few days of slow losses, I would not over think it. Check out my Post Induction Stall Syndrome for what you are likely experiencing. I would wait longer before necessarily trying to tweak my menus, but most of the fat we eat is present within proteins.
What are good fats - any allowed foods -- meat, eggs, dairy (in limited portions), vegetable oils (like olive), nut oils (like peanut and coconut), avocado, etc.
@rhcprule3 I have tried doing it Steve's way and only lost 10 pounds in 6 months. Doing it via Atkins, I lost over 200 pounds in 15 months AND gained athletic performance (max weight lifted, endurance, and speed). My 211 pound weight loss seems to be REAL enough.
Everyone has their opinion, that is the beauty of free speech. I do have a question however. Could you please explain to me why a long term high fat diet wouldn't result in Ketosis? I'm sure there is a valid explanation I just thought that as in Diabetics a high level of beta oxidation would result in excess Acetyl CoA which when not used to drive citric acid cycle leads to elevated blood Ketone concentration
@3d86 "Could you please explain to me why a long term high fat diet wouldn't result in Ketosis"
That's the point of a ketogenic diet to put the body in ketosis -- a natural state for the body. You seem to be confusing ketosis and ketoacidosis -- two completely different conditions. One occurs with highly insulin resistant people and one with insulin senstive people, and the number of ketones in one blood is a magnitude of ten different. Check out my video here regarding the difference.
I think this dude doesn't know what he is talking about. I am on a plant protein diet..using smoothies. It works, you lose weight and build muscle while toning.. So maybe he should go back to school and get a real education. I am on the plant protein diet and Ive lost weight.. a safe weight lose and no side of effects...I laugh at the people on youtube all saying they know everything..UMMM NOT
@Bootelicious4u Wow such insight for someone with no credentials or insight to provide others. Good luck on your plant based diet, but I would prefer a diet where I can all the energy I need to fuel my marathon and resistance training. As for safety, there is as much danger or lack thereof in a plant-based approach as in the Atkins Diet.
Regardless of your mangled English and delayed thought process due to a lack of vital energies, you are entirely correct. I am glad we agree. It is misguided to speak with authority on things well outside of our grasp and education level.
Great, then we agree that you have utter clue on what you are talking about and should hang out elsewhere where your contributions might actually be relevant. I'll leave it up to your own discretion where that is because it certainly is not here.
Max is a great guest. I eat a very high protien diet up to 200 grams a day with no ill effects. Approx 50% of my diet comes from fat as well. Carbs are tolerated only during and after working out. Only after loosing the weight did I add in my workout carbohydrates. Atkins saved my life.
Yes after weeks of organ shutdown in which the kidneys no longer process fluids, guess what you retain water. Chronic heart problems from an infection. As for "no fucking way eating meat is good for you," funny after 37 years. countless physicals, blood analysis, and running marathons, my body, doctor, and health all seemingly say I am doing pretty well. I have no problems with weight or blood sugar.
BTW - thank for you not eating meat, so it's cheaper for me.
Crap!! Thats a good point bowulf...I was being an idiot promoting meat to vegetarians and other occasional meat eaters as being healthy I never realised that if demand for it went up it would mean costs of meat would go up (since governments are so busy just subsidising carbs. Ok no more promoting meat, I will happily stand in the front row promoting vegetarian and vegan diets to everyone and eating my steaks and fried chicken in my private time :P
If by heart attack, you mistyped and meant slip and fall on the ice. Then yes you are correct. If not, then you are just perpetuating a myth although with your vegan friends and background I doubt you are interested in truth over your bias.
Wow... There is so much wrong I have no idea where to start. The only place you get trans fat is from partially hydrogenated oils, which are found no where on this diet. Sat Fats - first the media has it wrong -- check out my cholesterol videos, and second check out the fat content of beef. It has as much mono-unsaturated as saturated fats. Check your facts first!
i know what trans are...and they are also in deep fried foods...what im saying is that alot of people will get the wrong message...and start eating things high in fat and not just the good ones..
If they are eating according to the plan, there are no unhealthy fats in it. Just frying even deep fat frying the foods in regular cooking oil like peanut or even corn does not increase the transfat content of the food. Frying in some unholy concoction of hydrogenated oils like crisco can, but then again Dr. Atkins was one of the first people speaking out against added transfats.
naffyking you are SO RIGHT! I have NEVER heard of anyone losing 200 pounds by "watching what they eat", by "taking the stairs instead of the elevator" or by "just cutting back" or as you say, by a "balanced diet".
eating high protein diets quenches the bodys desire for food (hunger) and also burning more calories than you eat is a proven method for loosing weight i have helped hundreds of people loose 20,30,40, and even 50 kgs , so by eliminating carbs from the diet, does infact work, i have how ever never helped or herd of someone loosing weight on a "balanced diet"
I tried losing weight for years just trying to limit the bad -- i.e. maintain past bad habits (Chinese buffets, pizza, etc.) but lessened, but like any addict, you can't control the bad forever. It's beast just waiting to go wild. Put it in a cage and off limits, suddenly your life and remaining at goal is manageable.
well yea is true protein makes u feel more full... but that depends on the person if they can keep a healthy weight or if they want to lose weight...but for example...if u wanna gain muscle and just eat alot of protein but no carbs.. ur actually not letting the body use all the protein ur eating cus the body will use protein for its main energy source if u dont have enough carbs...so unless your happy with how much ur gaining, you wont be able to get much bigger..but again it depends..
i have cheese everyday with my salads., with some protein like chicken or steak or fish. is the cheese alright to have with salads everyday or is that too much fat content? also i looked at the cream carbs and its similiar to skimmed milk , i dont think its any difference in carbs really
Cheese is fine below the 3-4 oz per day limit. Cream carb content per oz is 0, Skim milk is closer 2g. This is the wrong diet to do if you want to do low fat simple as that.
Is it possible to eat too much fat while doing Atkins and thereby slow your weight loss? I have no trouble cutting out carbs and limiting myself to the leafy and "induction" vegetables (I'm on day five) but I've really been going at it with the fat, i.e. big dollops of sour cream, cheese, eggs, briny meats...
Yes, it is still possible to overeat on a high fat diet, but as long as you eat when you are hungry and stop when you aren't, you should be fine. If you are hungrier one day than another, that is ok as well it is your body telling you something. Where most people get into trouble is grazing or eating because they are bored behavior .
No. Just don't make the mistake of limiting your fat intake. Adkins is a high fat diet,. Saturated fat is the key to effective long term weight loss and good health. A low fat// high protein diet will do nothing but elevate your insulin levels and increase hunger. See "Natural Health and Weight Lost"" by Barry Groves.
A high fat diet? Who on earth would be stupid enough to go on a diet high in fat. The atkins diet claims that fats aren't 'fattening.' That is so so wrong. Just eat smaller helthy meals and exercise more. It's pretty simple.
Have you seen my result? If you had, you'd wouldn't question the results or the healthy nature of this diet. You can't refute the progress that thousands of others like myself or the studies (both short term and long term >1 year) that have demonstrated the healthy nature of a high fat diet.
Think outside your current mindset and you may learn something.
Nukkinya, you realize, don't you, that you posted your misinformation on the page of someone who has lost 200 lbs. on the very diet you claim is fattening? You have been miseducated and misled about the benefits of high carb/low fat or low carb/high fat diets. Kent is an inspiration to us all, and thoroughly disproves statements such as yours.
You obviously won't listen to reality. I lost weight on a diet high in fat and ate often 3000+ Calories per day. I tried to lose weight with futility on diets @ 1500 Calories per day. My blood work, lipids panels, and physicals have been excellent ever since starting a ketogenic diet.
Eat more and lose more weight and have less starvation mode diet related problems seems like a winning plan for me.
That hypothesis, eating less and exercising more, has been refuted. Gary Taubes has done extensive research on the subject. See his book Good Calories, Bad Calories. Also his lecture titled "Big Far Lies".
the fats that Atkins diet recommends are healthy fats. If you knew anything about bodybuilding you would know the difference between good fats and bad fats.
Fat people do what you recommend all the time to get fatter. Who wants to be hungry all the time? High saturated fat is the key to healthy weight loss.
alright ive been on the high fat, medium protein, low carb diet for 10+ days and its the most legit diet ive ever been on, with consistently good moods, moderate energy unlike the carb crash, patience elevated, skin is CLEAR OF ACNE for the first time in my life, body heals quick, nails grow faster...what a miracle
hey whats up!! first of all your vidoes are very helpful, second I just have a question. Im 180 lbs 6 ft, and im just trying to get ripped, and i work out alot, will atkins diet work for me?? i mean will it give me enough energy to do my workouts and still get defined? thanks
The Atkins Diet is certainly good for getting ripped and eating healthy once and for all. I have never had any problem (after the first few weeks) doing my workouts -- whether that was rounds of P90x or running a marathon.
thanks for the vid, I was just wondering, i eat about 5-6 egg whites a day. Is that okay? and I'm guessing even if you cook your egg whites over easy, you get a lot of protein? right? thnks
I am wondering why not the yolks, but assuming you are doing for taste reasons not health myths you should be fine. As long as you can stay from hunger and keep your macronutrient ratios correct (65-30-5 for Induction), you should be fine.
For this atkin diet, after youve finished the phases, do you have to continue doing a low carb diet in your whole life or what..how are you supposed stop the diet after you've reached the goal??
The final phase is a maintenance phase. That is the phase that one should stay on for generally the rest of their life, but that means you have learned what your relationship with food that you can maintain your weight. How many carbs per day that is totally up to the person.
Thanks for the info , I was just wondering as a new atkins dieter and about 5 days into the induction, If I follow the regimented diet will I really drop the 30 lbs I am looking to drop over the next four months?
I think you should be able to or at least get very close. The last few pounds are suggested to be lost slowly as you work out what your maintenance level of carbs and food intake will be. I would suggest you watch my "How much weight will I lose?" video where I deal with the question more fully.
Thanks Kent. I do use butter and salad dressing too. However..I do tend to eat lean meats..unless I cook pork. I'll read your blog and I will continue to keep an eye on my food choices. Have a good night!
Kent, During induction how does one get that 60-65% fat? I am not eating cheese. I am taking a flax seed oil 2T. per day..and I use mayo. I cook with canola but not often. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks- Nice video.
Have a look at my menus blog for ideas (just google "Bowulf menus" and you should find a link to it).
I usually have no problems with my fat percentage. Sometimes I stray into the 70-75% range. Of course, I have salad dressing on my salads and butter on my veggies, which add to the fat content. I also feature sausage (no sugar) in my menus as well. Look at the protein - are you just eating leaner proteins.
I found cooking with Ghee to be a huge help during induction and beyond. I am in OWL and often forget to eat enough fat. When that happens I get bitchy and my energy tanks. Ghee, butter and mayo all help me stay in the 65-70% range.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I still have about 20 pounds to go to bet to my goal. I love eating low carb. It really seems to work for me. Since 06 I've lost 55 pounds. However..I was on and off the program..but I am back on trak now still sitting at 55 lost. Keep up the good work all of you. It's worth it ! A good book to refernece is "Eat right for your blood type" Interesting book. If you are type "o" blood . Low carb is the best diet for you. I think its good for any type.Take care ~Amy
wow my brain is twitching, lol I swear Im horrible with the number/grahm/% lingo.... I think Max should start posting his own videos! LOL ..( Im picturing him in glasses and lil microphone).. =)
I think in the end what I took out of the information is that Atkins Diet uses fat primarily for energy and that according to USDA standards, it isn't high protein or high LEAN protein. If you are going to eat chicken breasts, eat the skin with it or eat it with some fat (cheese, cream, fat, dressing, etc.).
Plus you already know you are much healthier now than before. This video series is more for the doubters than the followers. I have another one planned in a few days on water weight.
I heard that the America heart association gave its seal of approval to pop tarts! Its so clear that they are payed off and they are in the back pocket of junk food makers. Ive studied health and nutrition for over 5 years and I can say with out any doubt that the Atkins diet trumps everything!
I know. I just had someone who said they wouldn't try Atkins because AHA and others cautionary tales. Given their record of past recommendations -- remember when Cheerios and Oat Bran were all the rage?, I am keen to take all the science, compare it to my reality, and then make some conclusions from there.
Kent: 'YOU FLITHY ANIMAL'.... LOVED THE RABBITS IN THE VIDEO.... ROTFL.... as for the Canadians getting bitchy with the runs..from lack of whale meat in diet...I get that from a lack of Moose meat.... OMG... KENT YOUR KILLING ME.... LOL Rachele
Hey, this was an all Rach and Nic episode all the time...
I always knew Canadians had to have a breaking point to their niceness. I finally found it remove their access to moose meat. Check the links - rabbit starvation is a legitimate condition. :-)
Max is safe. He is much too lean to eat, but I could always make a garlic cream butter sauce for him. Hmmm. :-) (Just kidding)
I made this great holiday's recipe that the wife and kids loved today. I have been looking for another great recipe to introduce to you guys, and I think I found it.
I do better on high protein. Fat doesn't fill me up at all and the number of calories per gram run my calories up too fast. I shoot for about 1g of protein for every pound I weigh, but sometimes I don't make it. Percentage-wise I seem to be at about 42%.
It's all about finding what works for you. For me, life without the fat would be problematic. The low fat foods I was eating never led to same feelings of being full. The only exceptions I have found are nuts for me, but I think that is more behaviorally controlled, not due to the fat not working.
In your case with the moderate carbs, I would think that should prevent any of the negative side effects.

@lonnieke Dude - how many repeats of the same question?
Did you not see this in this video description?
How much protein is advisable:
* .8 - 1.2g per kg of body weight - normal adults, or roughly 72g to 109g per day for 200 pound adult
* Up to 1.6g per kg - for extremely active or weight lifting adults, or 145g for 200 pound adult (29%)
I also talk about this at 7:32 in the video.

METABOLIC TYPING. that is the new revolution of dieting, we'll hear more about it in the next decade or so when research results amass
danhantheman 1 year ago
@danhantheman I am unsure of the metabolic typing or the blood test diet as one indicate my best diet would be one of strictly grains and the other limits fat to high protein (40%) not high fat (30%).
bowulf 1 year ago
@bowulf def go with the metabolic typing, the online official test. I've read about the blood type based diet, doesn't seem very reliable as there doesn't seem to be strong evidence of inherent differences in dietary needs due to diff blood antigen markers.
As for metab typing, it would never prescribe something such as high protein but low fat. the entire purpose is to stabilize your blood sugar based on how rapidly you metabolize diff macronutrients
danhantheman 1 year ago
this is because an extremely high protein diet actually is moderately insulin-triggering while fat is entirely not. also, even the most extreme diets such as the Inuit only eat 20-30% protein by calories (fat could be 70-80%!). There seems to be a ceiling on healthy protein intake among humans due to its toxicity for the kidneys i.e. what bodybuilders do is pretty unhealthy.
danhantheman 1 year ago
@danhantheman Correct, but this is contrary to what the metabolic typing diet for "high protein" classification promoted. It promoted a high protein rather than a high fat diet, which is again not what Atkins or ketogenic diets recommend. This may just be something similar to the multiple primal or paleo diets -- each recommending their own specific.
At this point, Atkins has been proven extremely healthy for me.

Just my 2 cents. I failed on the Atkins diet, but lost 83lbs on a high fiber diet. I also paid no attention to carbs and didn't exercise. No supplements either. Hope that helps?
derekbanas 1 year ago
@derekbanas I am glad you found your way. One way doesn't necessarily work for all people or all tastes.
bowulf 1 year ago
@bowulf I don't mean to be negative. I just was frustrated by high protein diets. Especially because I had a business in which I basically exercised all day (moving business) and gained a ton of weight. Maybe this high protein diet only works for specific body types? If it worked for you and others I think that's great! Achieving the goal is all that matters in the end :)
derekbanas 1 year ago
@derekbanas Actually Atkins is a high fat not high protein diet. I think its effectiveness probably revolves more around tastes or what food one desires more so than specific type of body. To keep beating yourself up with food choices that you can't stand or aren't willing to cook conversion foods, the diet is probably not one for you whatever it is.
It would be like me trying to do a raw vegan diet. I may lose weight for awhile, but I'd hate it and life being on it.

Marathon runners eat carbs are they fat?????

@Wrenchlar I run marathons on a ketogenic diet. Am I fat?

@Wrenchlar Because the average person runs a marathon, right?
PowerHeal 1 year ago
sorry i didnt realize this was a job application had I realized that i may have given a shit about my grammar.
Wrenchlar 1 year ago
@Wrenchlar "any decent sports nutritionist or dietitian is incorrect"
Sorry you fail. There are a number of nutritionists that support a low carb plan, and the fact that the associations don't is a manner of politics and group think and perhaps not science. Go back to the studies to find out what is the truth, and the science backs the low carb approach.
Finally, I can tell your mom is proud of you and your language.
bowulf 1 year ago
@Wrenchlar Not a job application, but if you are going to say "are you talking nonsense because your lack of carbs prevents your brain from functioning properly." You just might want to get your sh*t straight first. Just a clue...
As for gluconeogenesis, it is primarily from dietary protein not from muscle tissue especially not in protein deficit environment. Sorry you are just making this too easy to poke holes in your inadequate argument.
bowulf 1 year ago
This is not anecdotal it is way way way more evidence based than the atkins diet. check out what the acsm fsa who doh and other big guns recommend. They don't make stuff up as they go along. Many Millions have lost fat eating higher carbs than fat and protein from running a Marathon or going to work without the essential fuel you need to move its going to be harder this is a nobrainer!
Wrenchlar 1 year ago
@Wrenchlar "Many Millions have lost fat eating higher carbs than fat and protein from running a Marathon or going to work without the essential fuel you need to move its going to be harder this is a nobrainer! "
Can I buy a punctuation for this rambling mess of a sentence? It is undecipherable as to what it's meaning is. How do you dispute the mounting evidence showing low carb diets more effective at weight loss and lean body preservervation than low fat plans?
bowulf 1 year ago
carbs are a metabolic primer for fatloss if you don't have carbs you can't burn fat what will happen is that Protein which has to come from the breakdown of muscle tissue will be converted into carbs. Protein from intake can't be used as energy. are you talking nonsense because your lack of carbs prevents your brain from functioning properly. If you breakdown muscle tissue your metabolism goes down!
Wrenchlar 1 year ago
@Wrenchlar Sorry you are just wrong. Protein can be converted to glucose and thereby to energy through gluconeogenesis. As for carbs being needed for fat loss, ketogenic diets have been proven more successful for losing visceral fat than other diets.
So as for brain functioning properly, I point to the unreadability of your posts or the random capitalization of your second posts. Is your blood glucose spiking and preventing you from following basic grammar rules of capitalization?
bowulf 1 year ago
@bowulf I am looking at the conversation here and I have to say the Keto diet worked well for me. The higher fat intake gave me heartburn but the fat came off without any effort. I combined it with interval running and weight lifting and it came off very quickly.
Warpath2198 1 year ago
@Warpath2198 I hear you, and the heart burn probably could be dealt with easier than a heart attack or diabetes.
bowulf 1 year ago
@bowulf lol every true, I have never been diabetic and never would want to. I have seen people injected themselves and taking blood samples. At the most I have only been about 30 lbs overweight after I got out of the Air Force. Its still amazing how places advertise low fat and add sugar lol. Take out fiber and add sugar. Take out natural sugar and add laboratory made corn syrup. So they offer all of these bad foods approved by the govt. and people like Obama's wife is like hey just don't eat it
Warpath2198 1 year ago
@Wrenchlar dude you are rambling. You don't need any carbs at all. Studies have been done on the holocaust survivors decades later and their brains function normally. I have been on low carb/high protein diets while weight lifting and it works like a champ.
Warpath2198 1 year ago
@Warpath2198 Er, holocost survivors kind of didn't get much of ANY food....I don't even want to know what they got. I refrain from comparing to such a horrific event. Instead...I prefer to use Inuit or Masai as examples of how people don't need any carbs at all. Anyways, this comment was 9 months ago, so maybe you wouldn't make such a comparison anymore anyway. Also, make sure your fat intake is high and protein intake is moderate...(based on your personal weight lifting goals). Good luck.
Zorica12 7 months ago
all the macro nutrients (protien carbs fats) do different jobs you need all 3 carbs are required in the largest amount of the 3 i have always eaten more carbs than proiten and fat and have 7% body fat.
Wrenchlar 1 year ago
@Wrenchlar No phase of the Atkins Diet has prevents you from eating from all three macronutrients. Carbs are not required in the largest amount as the function they perform can be provided by the other - used for fuel. In fact, fat is a more dense fuel source as well as being a source of essential fatty acids.
As for your ability to eat high carb and have 7% only is anecdotal. It does not make it prescriptive for others or universal. Not everyone is like you or has same daily routine.
bowulf 1 year ago
@Wrenchlar
Actually you do not need all three , you could live your whole life without carbs and you would be fine. E.g the inuit people live on a diet mainly of fatty meat and no carbs , and they are completely healthy. You can cut out carbs and live a healthy life , but cut out fat or protein and you will die.

so what fat is good fat ? like in cheese and eggs ? ive been doing atkins for 3 weeks and have lost 17 lbs but last few days have only lost 1lb and realised ive not had any fat just protein and less than 10 grams of carbs a day ..so guess i need to up the carbs back up to 20 and increase the fat ..im still doing induction and was feeling great last week but have been feeling tired again..guess this is because ive not been having any fat which i need for energy ? thank you
sugarcube67 1 year ago
@sugarcube67 With only a few days of slow losses, I would not over think it. Check out my Post Induction Stall Syndrome for what you are likely experiencing. I would wait longer before necessarily trying to tweak my menus, but most of the fat we eat is present within proteins.
What are good fats - any allowed foods -- meat, eggs, dairy (in limited portions), vegetable oils (like olive), nut oils (like peanut and coconut), avocado, etc.

bowulf 1 year ago
Everyone has their opinion, that is the beauty of free speech. I do have a question however. Could you please explain to me why a long term high fat diet wouldn't result in Ketosis? I'm sure there is a valid explanation I just thought that as in Diabetics a high level of beta oxidation would result in excess Acetyl CoA which when not used to drive citric acid cycle leads to elevated blood Ketone concentration
3d86 1 year ago
@3d86 "Could you please explain to me why a long term high fat diet wouldn't result in Ketosis"
That's the point of a ketogenic diet to put the body in ketosis -- a natural state for the body. You seem to be confusing ketosis and ketoacidosis -- two completely different conditions. One occurs with highly insulin resistant people and one with insulin senstive people, and the number of ketones in one blood is a magnitude of ten different. Check out my video here regarding the difference.

@Bootelicious4u Wow such insight for someone with no credentials or insight to provide others. Fact:
They are all misguided fad dieters with no nutritional or biological background, who are easily convinced by pseudo science.

Check your facts first!
bowulf 2 years ago
i know what trans are...and they are also in deep fried foods...what im saying is that alot of people will get the wrong message...and start eating things high in fat and not just the good ones..
justlegal21 2 years ago
If they are eating according to the plan, there are no unhealthy fats in it. Just frying even deep fat frying the foods in regular cooking oil like peanut or even corn does not increase the transfat content of the food. Frying in some unholy concoction of hydrogenated oils like crisco can, but then again Dr. Atkins was one of the first people speaking out against added transfats.

eating high protein diets quenches the bodys desire for food (hunger) and also burning more calories than you eat is a proven method for loosing weight i have helped hundreds of people loose 20,30,40, and even 50 kgs , so by eliminating carbs from the diet, does infact work, i have how ever never helped or herd of someone loosing weight on a "balanced diet"
naffyking 2 years ago
I tried losing weight for years just trying to limit the bad -- i.e. maintain past bad habits (Chinese buffets, pizza, etc.) but lessened, but like any addict, you can't control the bad forever. It's beast just waiting to go wild. Put it in a cage and off limits, suddenly your life and remaining at goal is manageable.
bowulf 2 years ago
well yea is true protein makes u feel more full... but that depends on the person if they can keep a healthy weight or if they want to lose weight...but for example...if u wanna gain muscle and just eat alot of protein but no carbs.. ur actually not letting the body use all the protein ur eating cus the body will use protein for its main energy source if u dont have enough carbs...so unless your happy with how much ur gaining, you wont be able to get much bigger..but again it depends..

i have cheese everyday with my salads., with some protein like chicken or steak or fish. is the cheese alright to have with salads everyday or is that too much fat content? also i looked at the cream carbs and its similiar to skimmed milk , i dont think its any difference in carbs really
Daisyacero 2 years ago
Cheese is fine below the 3-4 oz per day limit. Cream carb content per oz is 0, Skim milk is closer 2g. This is the wrong diet to do if you want to do low fat simple as that.
bowulf 2 years ago
Is it possible to eat too much fat while doing Atkins and thereby slow your weight loss? I have no trouble cutting out carbs and limiting myself to the leafy and "induction" vegetables (I'm on day five) but I've really been going at it with the fat, i.e. big dollops of sour cream, cheese, eggs, briny meats...
OxenHandler 2 years ago
Yes, it is still possible to overeat on a high fat diet, but as long as you eat when you are hungry and stop when you aren't, you should be fine. If you are hungrier one day than another, that is ok as well it is your body telling you something. Where most people get into trouble is grazing or eating because they are bored behavior .
bowulf 2 years ago
Goinglite 2 years ago
A high fat diet? Who on earth would be stupid enough to go on a diet high in fat. The atkins diet claims that fats aren't 'fattening.' That is so so wrong. Just eat smaller helthy meals and exercise more. It's pretty simple.
Nukkinya 2 years ago
Have you seen my result? If you had, you'd wouldn't question the results or the healthy nature of this diet. You can't refute the progress that thousands of others like myself or the studies (both short term and long term >1 year) that have demonstrated the healthy nature of a high fat diet.
Think outside your current mindset and you may learn something.
bowulf 2 years ago
Nukkinya, you realize, don't you, that you posted your misinformation on the page of someone who has lost 200 lbs. on the very diet you claim is fattening? You have been miseducated and misled about the benefits of high carb/low fat or low carb/high fat diets. Kent is an inspiration to us all, and thoroughly disproves statements such as yours.
Ultimist 2 years ago
A diet high in fat. Whatever, kent lost weight because he ate less and trained. A diet high in fat. Think common sense.
Nukkinya 2 years ago
You obviously won't listen to reality. I lost weight on a diet high in fat and ate often 3000+ Calories per day. I tried to lose weight with futility on diets @ 1500 Calories per day. My blood work, lipids panels, and physicals have been excellent ever since starting a ketogenic diet.
Eat more and lose more weight and have less starvation mode diet related problems seems like a winning plan for me.
bowulf 2 years ago
That hypothesis, eating less and exercising more, has been refuted. Gary Taubes has done extensive research on the subject. See his book Good Calories, Bad Calories. Also his lecture titled "Big Far Lies".

I am wondering why not the yolks, but assuming you are doing for taste reasons not health myths you should be fine. As long as you can stay from hunger and keep your macronutrient ratios correct (65-30-5 for Induction), you should be fine.

ey bowulf..
For this atkin diet, after youve finished the phases, do you have to continue doing a low carb diet in your whole life or what..how are you supposed stop the diet after you've reached the goal??
MA5T3R0fD15A5T3R 3 years ago
The final phase is a maintenance phase. That is the phase that one should stay on for generally the rest of their life, but that means you have learned what your relationship with food that you can maintain your weight. How many carbs per day that is totally up to the person.
bowulf 3 years ago
Thanks for the info , I was just wondering as a new atkins dieter and about 5 days into the induction, If I follow the regimented diet will I really drop the 30 lbs I am looking to drop over the next four months?
mtp23church 3 years ago
I think you should be able to or at least get very close. The last few pounds are suggested to be lost slowly as you work out what your maintenance level of carbs and food intake will be. I would suggest you watch my "How much weight will I lose?" video where I deal with the question more fully.
Thanks for watching.

Kent, During induction how does one get that 60-65% fat? I am not eating cheese. I am taking a flax seed oil 2T. per day..and I use mayo. I cook with canola but not often. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks- Nice video.
jade67231 3 years ago
Have a look at my menus blog for ideas (just google "Bowulf menus" and you should find a link to it).
I usually have no problems with my fat percentage. Sometimes I stray into the 70-75% range. Of course, I have salad dressing on my salads and butter on my veggies, which add to the fat content. I also feature sausage (no sugar) in my menus as well. Look at the protein - are you just eating leaner proteins.
bowulf 3 years ago
I found cooking with Ghee to be a huge help during induction and beyond. I am in OWL and often forget to eat enough fat. When that happens I get bitchy and my energy tanks. Ghee, butter and mayo all help me stay in the 65-70% range.

I do better on high protein. Fat doesn't fill me up at all and the number of calories per gram run my calories up too fast. I shoot for about 1g of protein for every pound I weigh, but sometimes I don't make it. Percentage-wise I seem to be at about 42%.
I do a low-fat, moderate-carb, high-protein diet.

Low carb is the only diet I have tried that I lose weight on. I wonder why? I love this way of living....
