  • Nothing better than EC and ES 335.

  • As for the song -- really dislike this version. The turnaround and tempo really combine to wreck it for me. It's good parts from Lowell's and Elvis's, but I just don't like the result. This version with Elvis singing...that would probably work better for me. Of the covers, though, I'm in with Freddie King's.

  • The guitar debate is funny...think about how SRV made a strat sound, then go try to play one like he had his set up -- good luck! And really, too many people overemphasize the instrument and fail to realize how much of the tone is the guy plucking the strings...oh, and the amp behind him...if you want your "why did he" answers, go read his autobiography...

  • Gibson?

  • I hate to inject this comment (rather argument), but since there seems to be a generous amount of knowledgeable blues fans on this post, could you rank both vocal and technical skills amongst B.B., Eric, SVR, etc.

  • The Cream reunions was utterly ruined because he didn't play a Gibson and a Marshall, and neither did Jack Bruce. The only redeeming player was Ginger Baker. Eric, Get rid of the Fenders and stick to SG's, 335's and Marshalls. OK, you can use a Gibson with a Fender Amp, but only on one song !!!

  • @racer500gp I was going to disagree with you, but I guess some folks just don't have an ear for a single coil.

  • @davidriggs1955 I meant for the Cream stuff, not his solo endeavors. I love Strats (I have three of them).

  • @racer500gp I had to learn how to like a strat. For years, I preferred the gibson through a marshall, but I have found myself really appreciating the Robert Cray and Jimmy Vaughn tones. I hope you didn't take my comment as an attack. A lot of people get crazy with attacking other folks about their preferences.

  • @davidriggs1955 Not at all. I have been a musician for 45 years. I'm not some YouTube punk that will attack if you don't like my opinions !!!

  • This song is from Lowell Fulson, Not Eric Clapton.

THumbs this up. Why? Well i love eric, but this is not his shit, and if he's showing ppl like you what the blues is, you people should discover all the different and fantistic artists, rather than bundling it all up into one man that is really good at playing his personal covers of them,

  • @dirosaga You know what, ppl like you shouldn't tell other people what they should or shouldn't like.

I discovered the original of this song by Lowell Fulson in the sixties on an album called The Blues Vol.1 which was responsible for starting my love affair with the blues which has continued to this day.

This doesn't mean I snobbishly reject any other versions of the great standards.

The only criterion should be,is it any good? ----and I LOVE this version by Eric.

  • @kingstumble 'You know what,' search my comment and show me anywhere i told people what to like. Why i did this is Eric covers a ton of good old blues songs, but alot of people who watch the youtube vids don't know they are covers. And because they don't know this they miss out on finding the original artist and all of his/her other great songs and albums. They miss out on the blues, So why don't you take your old, overly sensitive ass over to someone else who wants to here your bullshit.

  • @dirosaga At least I can spell. Ha ha!

  • Clapton playing this way is at his best . Relaxed, in the groove and giving Lowell Fulson song a great tribute that becomes a standard. thank you, Eric !

  • I like him more when he plays Gibson guitars.

  • Imagine, at 58, I want to learn to play my heros tunes, Eric Clapton. I have no neighbors to offend, no wife, no girlfriend, kids or pets. I can crank it up and play all night long. What equipment do you recommend?

  • i think he went to strats because he didnt want to be reconised as eric clapton-cream. he was tired of that scene... thats why he did bonnie and delaney and derick and dominoes-etc...He wanted to sound like someone other that eric clapton....and yes he does sound so much better on Gibson

  • U got to be kidding!

  • Imagine that guitar with Elvis voice. It would be 100 points.

  • I thought if you played the electric finger picking style you would get an electric shock, is the why everybody calls him Electric Eric m?

  • @Jazz95Master Im not kidding.. gibsons are hard to play - strats ftw <3

  • Clapton is good with both Strat and Gibson. But even sometimes he wears a simple t shirt, Clapton cares about how he looks. I suspect that one of the reasons he uses Strat is that he thinks it looks better on him and vice versa. Of course, I may be wrong.

  • Look how Clapton is dressed, at 23 he was a millionnaire, what a simple guy for keeping it simple and focus on feelings & music.

  • @DarkHorizonEOS Not sure what you mean about 23? Oh in his later years? Don't get it.

  • @noeljdun12 their just sayin that hes been rich since he was 23 and he still isnt dressed all flashy many years later

  • When you hear BB King talking about his Lucille you understand how magic it is to play on a Gibson, one name that kept the pace thru the years and always ahead of Fender thanks to US tradition & the name: Les Paul ...

Reissued 50's,60's &some more signature models make it all legendary

  • Glad to see all the love for his Gibson's here! I've always considered Gibson to be the better blues instrument, it just flat out has a richer, more melodic tune for the blues.

Don't get me wrong, I love Stratocasters and there's nothing like hearing Jeff Beck play his Strat, but Gibson dominates the blues.

  • He's been a hero of mine for years but I prefer the Les Paul sound from the Bluesbreakers era. Definitely should stick with Gibson. Same as SRV sounded incredible on the strat Eric needs that thicker sound.

  • The man god. Well he plays what he wants and he makes any guitar sound good.

I mean if you gave him a £100 guitar he would still be able to do it. But then came the news of TBX on Clapton Strats, for that go between on fender strats not fogetting the midboost. for the full length Women Tone. GREAT

  • I think eric sounds SOOOO much better on the strat. this is too twaingy for him. its just not his style. i mean he can play it really well, cause he eric clapton, but he sounds so much better on a strat. and he looks better on one too :)

  • I love his guitar but ELVIS VERSION is just out of this world.

  • Eric Clapton DOES sound better on a Gibson!!

  • Love it! Y'know this is about the most animated Eric's ever been! lol. He gets older, yet fitter! Love the 335, sounds awesome, real gritty blues. Keep on rockin' EC!

  • Best band I think he ever had. Not sure why he stopped playing with Andy Newmark?

  • 1:36, God mode = On

  • @TheGrandeMartini 2:22 ,mass destruction mode-on

  • @GBTBUBA 0:00 to 3:39, Fucking unbielevable mode on

  • Everytime I see this I wanna buy a 335...

  • Let's take away the doubt who's the best...

Cuz this vid... Well, said it all!

  • gibson or not sound and electric sounds outstanding. eric coooooooll.

  • As a player of both I can tell you I completely understand his use of both axes. Strats are a more versatile instrument for starters. But you just "get into" the sounds of either and go with it for as long as it takes. It keeps you fresh as a player to keep it mixed up! The holy trinity of guitars are Les Paul (vintage specs) es 335 and Strat.

Can't really say one is "better" than the other.

  • @djangolad I agree, but to a point. There are some things even in blues that only a telecaster can do. Personally, much as I like the sound of Les Pauls, I've never been able to get into them. So my Blues "trinity" would be 335, Strat then Tele. Clapton's sound on this Gibson is the best I've ever heard him sound to my ear.

  • necer mind gibson vs fender .....he could play a rubber band and melt your face ..love it x

  • Que guea mas espectacular!!

  • gibson or fender...I think it depends on who gives the best sponsor deal..:-)

look at joe bonamassa, he went to a gibson sponsor deal, since that he havent played anything from his blues deluxe album, and that was without any doubt his best album ever... but the sound on a gibson just cant do it on those tracks, and i think that goes the other way around also... its not just the look its everything, like sustain pickups etc that makes the diff from track to track...

  • Ah ha, in this version Clapton sang 2nd verse wrong , instead of singing ' i'll let you go head out baby' he sang 'why don't reconsider baby' which is meant for 3rd verse. So i guess even god guitarist can err too but not that it matters. Clapton is still god. Love him more when he makes mistakes though!

PS. i bet he sounds great in any kind of guitar he plays, it just that, i guess, he thinks a strat looks (not necessarily sounds) coolest for him.

  • Never heard him play a lick like 2:45 - 2:50 before. Clapton is something else.

  • wow wow what a power in his voice

  • i can tell that this is really good based on the

number of times i have listened to it....

  • Realmente es increible lo que Eric es capaz de sacarle a la Gibson. En mi pais le decimos Dios.

  • Eric Clapton = DIOS.

  • puta que o pariu

  • Compared to supreme artists like clapton and the great black players that influenced him, Joe Bonamassa is a nerdy try-hard..:)

  • CHECK OUT THIS SONG BY JOE BONAMASSA

  • @moseseseseses ya joe does a smokin' version

  • If you wish to hear this song did at its best, type in: JOE BONAMASSA, RECONSIDER BABY, TANGIER, AKRON OHIO, and get ready to have your mind blown away.

  • Plays fast and sings with an average voice...

  • @chickenandbaconclub2 .. the reverse.. plays slow (and great) and has a great voice

  • @chickenandbaconclub2 thank you sooo much for your expertise. I wouldn'T have known what to make of this sans your help! pffft...

  • @thailow117 Pardon?

  • If you wish to hear this song at its best, type in: JOE BONAMASSA: RECONSIDER BABY, TANGIER, AKRON OHIO, and get ready to have your mind blown away.

  • wow this is amazing Clapton is a god!!!!!!

  • I'm going through this shit right now. LIfe sucks, but at least I got Lowell Fulson via. Clapton :/

  • If any man should have the blues in him, this man should.

  • Simply put, this is good stuff

  • Lowell Fullson wrote this wonderful blues with this up-tempo beat thta makes it unique.

Whenever EC plays a song from someone it becomes a standard and he pays an incredible tribute to Lowell.

    Well done, Eric !

  • Agreed.

A Gibson suits his style so much better.I really don't understand his apparent obsession with Strats.

  • Put a fidle in His hands and he still will be de verry best!!!

  • Clapton once said:

"You can make a Strat sound like a Les Paul, but you can't make a Les Paul sound like a Strat".

A strat is more flexible in sound than a es-335 and a les paul, so he sticks to them instead of having to change guitar all the time.

  • what period did he say that in? because you cannot make a strat sound like a Les Paul. and you can make a les paul sound like a strat. i've been doing it for years.

  • you can make a gibson sort of sound like a strat, and you can sort of make a strat sound like a gibson. simmulated tone through the use of pedals is never as good as the real thing....guitar-chord-tube amp. if you want true les paul or 335 tone...then play a paul or 335. same with a strat, play a strat if you want true strat tone. i personally like all three very much and think that they all have their place. however i think claptons hands surely suit a gibson better than a fender.

  • @kingstumble agreed. after all it was him and the les paul that started it all. then the Sg w/ Cream

  • @kingstumble his love for hendrix apparently made him do it

  • @kingstumble Strats are far more playable on, especialy on stage!

  • @kingstumble you have to play one to understand.. i have the same feeling with strats

  • @o1zeidler

You misunderstand. Strats are perfectly fine guitars. I am on my third--still trying to find 'the one'.I also have a 335.All I am saying is that Eric sounds better with a 335 especially on this style of blues.

  • @kingstumble I know what you mean.. I'm trying to find another guitar that suits me.. got a Gibson Flying V, but its like it doesnt give me the satisfaction i need, FYI i play the blues 24/7

  • @o1zeidler Personally I love the versatility of the humbuckers so I'd say stick to that. I've got a Switch Oscar IV which I love, but they're really hard to come by. My favorite place to get guitars is in small music shops where the owner also plays guitar, they usually stock based on what they like so you're bound to get quality stuff. Also, if you can impress them sometimes you get a discount.

  • @kingstumble I think specific guitars inspired him to write specific songs which is probably the reason why he plays different guitars live. I think he sounds great regardless of any guitar he plays.

  • @kingstumble They both good:P

  • @kingstumble The reason he switched to Strats is because of his friendship with Strat master Jimi Hendrix, and after Hendrix died Clapton respected his life and legacy by switching to them, even though Gibsons are better for his style.

  • @DoubettheBluesman I don't mean to be a troll but I would like it if you posted a source for this fact. A moderately recent biography I read on Hendrix said that apart from blues, he and Clapton didn't have a whole lot to agree on. I shouldn't be talking because I haven't even read Clapton's autobiography though. Is it in there?

  • @thenbensaid Yeah it is in there and in a interview I red that Eric Clapton did for Guitar World that was in the issue of Guitar Legends that was conducted when From The Cradle was coming out. And it's ok, I didn't think you were troll.

  • @thenbensaid I just finished Clapton's biography, and there is a whole section on how well they got along... maybe the story has changed.

  • @kingstumble I like Strats. What we can do ?

But, Strat is a good guitar too.

  • @kingstumble There are some sounds you can get out of a guitar only if it's a Strat .

  • @CrAzZzZzZy94 I agree, but all I'm saying is Clapton's style is better suited to a Gibbo.

Conversely someone like Mark Knopfler should stick to Strats.Horses for courses or something like that.

  • @kingstumble Fender pays him to play with a Stratocaster, not to mention they give him all the strats free. cheers

  • @kingstumble @alphadogstudio you faggots leave him alone and let him play any guitar he wants

  • @kingstumble Because it sounds better to him

  • Steve Winwood turned him on to them during Blind Faith and lot's of blues players at the time were on Strats (Buddy Guy, Hendrix). Hendrix was the reason Clapton had a perm as well. I agree that those Humbuckers give his blues playing such a warmth but the Strat has given him some iconic tones. They're too different to compare I think.

  • This is the first time I'e seen Clapton play an electric with out a pick.

He sounds so much better on a Gibson

  • @alphadogstudio Kudos

  • i like this song, it sounds cool and slinky :)

  • Great performance ! He builts his version around the original by Lowell Fulsom. I must admit though that I think Elvis' version is the best

  • great picking

  • Saw his tour with Winwood. It was great, and a little sad, because at 64 and 61 respectively, one got the feeling that we are nearer the end than the beginning. I'm 53 so it is particularly bittersweat for people like me, who first saw him live in 1968. So enjoy these nuggets, one day, we will all be sitting around saying, "I remember when . . ." and this is all we'll have to show others what great musicianship on a guitar, is all about. The question is, "Will it be enough?"

  • Obviously the guitar playing is amazing, but that's about the handsomest guitar I've ever seen. Someday after awhile I'll have one of those!

  • vichhick..his wah wah use was not terrible..the wah wah was a brand new effects pedal in the mid 60's and he was one of the first to use it, i mean USE IT! back then it was experimentation. you sound stoned when you say his 'tone' was over rated...peace

  • you can't say his psychedelic work is overrated. his play is probably second only to jimi hendrix when it comes to psychedelic rock. sure clapton started as a blues player. all the greatest guitarists start with the blues. it's the cornerstone of rock n roll. but it is his work with the yardbirds and cream that made him into a superstar. he set the tone for the psychedelic sound. i too like his blues work more, but you can't say his psychedelic stuff is overrated.

  • Eric was fine in cream, Ginger was fine, Jack's bass was fine as well. Jacks Harp playing was hardly elementary. if you watch rollin and tumblin from the reunion, he is horrible. the guy who is playing right now is so much better. I wish he could have given this group a name, and went on as a band with them, all of them were great.

  • cream was psychedelic, his tone was overrated. THIS is what clapton was supposed to sound like. The Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith, and on was better. Cream was a period of time that he seemed to be wasted or something, if you listen to some of his live wah use, it was terrible(Tales of Brave Ulysses) because he was so Stoned. My only favorite cream album was Fresh Cream, it's more blues.

  • i've just to have a 335

  • He's not using a pick here...ala Jeff Beck

  • Yes, but more like ala Freddie King!

  • This era is litterally clapton at his best. Hands down. He was sober, he was emotionally attached to the music.. I've never seen him so involved in what he's playing! Bravo.. Anyone have ANY idea where I can get this on DVD/VHS?!?

  • i'm almost 100% sure this is the documentary done by Martin Scorcese about the Blues. Martin Scorcese presents the Blues or someting like that.. anyway ..I totally agree about this being the best Clapton era.. this is when the real feelings came out.. no drugs no booze (not that there's anything wrong with any of it) just the real man Eric Clapton really expressing himself through 6 strings. Awesome!!

  • Bullshit, his Cream work was monumental. Your going to compare the live Crossroads solo to this?

  • You're not supposed to compare, they're different eras. That was Clapton's "guitar god"/pre jam band phase, this isn't. This is the blues.

  • Yes. Yes I am.. Clapton himself in his autobiography says that he believes this was his finest period and doesn't get the hooplah about the crossroads solo. Sure, it's a good solo, never said it wasn't and never even sited that song.. I'm just agreeing with the man himself that the 'from the cradle' tour was some of his best playing.

  • you just cant beat that! the guitar is played so good that it sounds as though it is singing. never seen clapton play a gibson for a while but fuck me that was great.

  • God save Clapton...

  • after seeing this......clapton is GOD

  • Great video! Eric is a Legend. Nadine

  • Blues is Magic!!!

  • This is awesome. I also suggest Joe Bonamassa's version... it's got a sadder feel, but it's still great.

Damn I want to see Eric do this live!!!!

  • JOHNNYG99X asked for the amp not for the guitar... ;)

  • think its the fender 57 twin amp.. or a yamaha

  • Epic solo

  • Wonderful version by Eric (great tone, tasty playing and fine vocal). Let us give a little credit to the man that wrote it... Mr. Lowell Fulson. His recording is a real classic.

  • clapton is my hero end of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • did anyone ever notice in the beginning when he was trying to adjust the volume and he grabbed the pickguard instead?

  • Think about the layout of his strat... i didn't see i though

  • Comment removed

  • who cares hes still the best ever

  • Written by Lowell Fulson(1921-1999)

  • Clapton made a very good version, but pls. listen the the Charles Ford blues bnad versión.

  • He looks so small behind that Gibson xD

  • Angus looks pretty small behind his SG, he's 5' 2" And Albert king makes his guitar look tiny!

  • true about Angus he's a little genius though and I dig Albert king awesome player but I don't like v neck guitars to much

  • lowell fullson wrote this song.Love it.

    I prefer Freddie King version.

I have always loved Clapton as a guitarist but as a singer he is,compared to his guitar playing, poor.

  • wonderfull tone, and that piano in back sounds like on shoud!!!!!!!!!

reminds me of my p bas!

  • anyone know what amp Eric is using here, and even better what speaker is loaded ? thanks

  • I'm pretty sure it's a vintage fender '57 twin ;)

  • Love it!!

Elvis Presley also recorded some killer versions of this song between 1956 and 1977.

  • love that tone..

  • very good version but not the best !

  • J O E B O N M A S S A

  • ANITAGOFRADOMP

  • Sorry, I don't believe you!

  • I don`t either !

  • And you can do better? I want to see come on show me??? Tell you what I'll wait better not hold my breath though huh?

  • He's PLAYING a gibson u guys!!

  • man i heard joe bonamassa's version of this the other day, melted my face!

  • Wuahu!! Grande Eric! muy Grande!

  • for the love of God Eric- please go back to Gibsons- tone is much much better

  • I completely agree with you. Let's do a petition: "Eric, go back to Gibson...for the love of God!" :) :) :)

  • For this song gibson sounds awsome but hes a strat player and always will be!!

  • Dude, some of his ebst work was done on a gibson, John Mayall, Cream, the solo for whil my guitar gently weeps, Im sorry but EC sunded eaps better on a gibson, the strat has takne some of his fire, although o a good night he could set the wolrd ablaze, EC is a god after all

  • Eric needds to go back to the Gibson Full time- tone is sooooo much better

  • this is on the "from the cradle" cd... and the album version is even better than this...in my only sometimes humble estimation..

  • Is this on a cd anywhere?

  • this is a good version man, iam always looking for good licks man try this; i am traveling to mexico gonna find me a senorita there

  • sadly so short! :(

  • do you experts realise how good he is on this one? lol

  • i don't think so.maybe an electric-acoustic bass.

  • where was that concert?

  • EC is GOD

  • i love the 19 time grammy winner

congrats eric for winning 19 times

he is the best i love him to death!! EC 4 LIFE

  • talk is cheap..

  • I've got an audio boot of a Clapton concert in the late 1970s where he does his Key to the Highway(?)/Have You Ever Loved a Woman medley and he had those crescendoes dialed in to maximum emotional effect. I sure didn't enjoy the pop stuff, esp. 'Wonderful Tonight'. I read that it is actually meant in a sarcastic way, which would be a relief.

  • If you honestly think Eric Clapton is an average guitar player, you need to wake up. Listen to some of his songs from the crossroads guitar festival 2004 and from the One more car, One more rider album. People dont get inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame for no reason asshole!

  • and u no there's a hell of a reason if they get inducted 3 fucking times!! rock on eric

  • clapton plays here nearly all songs of 'from the cradle' and some other blues classics.

  • Tell you what...make a video of yourself..." noodeling around ", see if it's as good as, or better than this, I'm guessing you won't...so..if you can't show..don't blow.
