  • ian dury. fucking legend.

  • Just Wonderful!!!!!

  • The announcer sounds like Jools Holland...

  • I have the 12" of this and on the b-side is Hit me with your rhythm stick.

  • "Sing-along-a-Smokie, comin' out a-chokie!" :-b !!

  • Good to hear the chorus repeated after the sax break and before the repeat of the second verse. The repeat of the chorus has been cut out for compilations, and this compilation version is played on the radio. Looks like you need the original single to find the repeated chorus.

  • Anthony Newley????

  • The Stop the World guy was the granddaddy of Brit rap...rhubarb rhubarb, cha-cha-cha

  • 3 people couldn't find any reason to be cheerful.

  • ugh i am sooo disapointed by the lack of bass tabs for this song....

  • RIP a real english gent, you dont know quite how much you're missed

  • How can anybody dislike this . . . ?

  • This song always reminds me of summer hols as a child. Absolutely love it, even the drum beat is so cheerful and playful. Excellent lyrics and yes, that sax bit is lush!

  • Does music get any better than this?

  • NANNY GOATS! im half emo. half happiness. depends on the day. today is not an emo day. im sorry. WHOO!

  • A reason to be cheerful? The way the sax eases it's way into the song around 2:40.

  • what a funk!!!!

  • This is music ? ? ? ? ? Edna

  • yakes me back to summer 1979. 15 and loving music

  • my reason to be cheerful , i can still walk , with sticks and leg braces but i can do it myself !! rip geezer

  • Weird reading your comment this morning. And heartening. The reason I chose to listen to this song this morning is that I have a dear friend going thru a very difficult time in the acute phase following brain surgery, and then a stroke, which has nearly paralyzed his left side and much more. He has a long way back to recovery, health and walking again. He's a young 53. You do have reasons to be cheerful, almost all of us do, and it's so cool you know it. Thanks for the attitude and inspiration.

  • @MsEsCee i learnt a long time ago that no matter how bad you are there is always someone worse than you . i wish your friend well and hope he recovers soon . every life is important and every life lost makes the world a sadder place to live in .

  • @dave2806 well said mate. RIP Ian Dury, proper chap!

  • jaja q pirado estaba el loco. grande ian

  • The most perfect sax break ever!

  • Looks like 1 blockhead hit the dislike button by accident...

  • @M8EO me to, i did the same thing! doh!

  • IAN Y LOS BLOCKHEADS UNICOS E IRREPETIBLES

  • @iguanna41 hatred and stupidity are never resons to be cheerful!

  • @iguanna41 what a fool you are! hatred and stupidity are never reasons to be cheerful.do a bit of research and find out how you are being brainwashed and used by the people that control this world. divide and rule has always been their game and you fell right into their trap!

  • @iguanna41 : Do you really think that social communication and media sites like this, where sad little people like yourself, can put silly comments on means that anyone is A: Going to take a blind bit of notice and B: Think you have any credible intelligence to hold a meaningful converstaion? More likley people would consider you to be nothing more then a sad little person that should be put in the quite corner and told not to speak.

  • @iguanna41 you're a douche. plain and simple.

  • It's very annoying that on the compilation album it's shorter, because they have cut out the reprise of the chorus after the instrumental break.

  • 1 person isn't very cheerful...

  • I had no idea this was an actual song until my mum just started singing it. What great production! So funky. I like the sunny jazz interlude.

  • This was one of the first records I bought when I started DJaying in 1978. LOL. I brought it a record store in Pathmark Supermarket in Long Island. Talk about going way back.....

  • we need more cowbell

  • What a talent and a top geezer

  • did Prince cop this groove?

  • dead right sarcastic man. Reasons to be cheerful is funny, clever, musically brill, and other stuff.

  • 1 guy cant find any reasons to be cheerful

  • mozart579...love this band... but wy would u just want to keep listening to un-new music all sounding the same...it's called evolving if u r looking ahead

  • this awesome band wouldnt get past round 1 of the x factor, which sums up the state of music today, I feel sorry for the kids who dont know any better than to lap up simon cowell's idea of music / entertainment, Ian dury was a genius. !

  • @teasreadyhun Simon Cowell is the only good thing of today, but that's not a compliment today's music sucks big time & any 80's tune re released would easily top the charts including this song, today's music sucks only decent stuff is from the xfactor but that's nowt compared to the good old days :)

  • That's one tight outfit mozart...kinda like the East End London version of Frank Zappas' outfit...I know what you mean

  • Awesome!

  • Who said great rock bands couldn't give up the funk!!!!!!

  • Norman Watt-Roy, one of the most under-rated bass players of all time, Quincy Jones wanted to work wiht the guy! Way ahead of time this, UK Hip-Hop long before The Streets and Dizzee Rascal. RIP Ian mate.

  • What can I say that has not been said already but 10/10

  • great music takes me back

  • wonderful song...the whole song goes out on why dont you get back in to bed...which Ian heard so much when he was young...why? figure it out

  • I listened to this a lot when I was young, because of my goddamn parents. So now I actually find myself liking this song... .... God.

  • Love this song!

  • Harpo, Groucho, Chico......

  • The guy wasa fighter for the downtrodden and those who get a rough deal in life. The ability to make songs that either take the piss or make us look at ourselves and think was his gift. Onya Ian you will be missed!!!

  • How prophetic .... Our current "Reason To Be Cheerful" --- HEALTHCARE REFORM!. If you weren't there when this song was a big "HIT", you probably don't understand the decline of our healthcare system. Trust us "older folks" (in our late 40's, early 50's, etc.) ... healthcare reform is a real "reason to be cheerful".

  • Ehhh?????

  • @Anet99

Uh, I'm not sure what exactly you mean about healthcare reform, but if you think UK hospitals are better today than in the 1970s, you are in La la land.

  • @Drblooter99

I understand that there's no such thing as "perfect", but the U.S. healthcare system is so screwed up. You can only understand this if you get "sick". here, (really sick). This administration has been able to actually "pass" healthcare reform. It may not be perfect, but it's a start. The last President to do this was FDR ... and the opposition called him a "socialist". Now,"Social Security" is something that allows senior citizen(& the disabled) to survive without going bankrupt.

  • @Anet99

Oh I see, you're talking about US healthcare reform, not UK.

We've had the National Health Service since the 1940s, but to get it going the Prime Minister had to pay doctors and consultants a fortune. Today's UK doctors and consultants are still arrogant, lazy and overpaid, and NHS hospitals are hit and miss affairs, with a lot of mistakes, infection, and nurses who barely speak English. But at least GP visits and hospital stays are still free!

  • So I've heard I've got friends in Europe and know that utopia does not exist, But, healthcare here has gotten so out of hand. If you have a "pre-existing condition" (who doesn't?) our "private" companies either outright REJECT you or charge you outrageous premiums. Insurance companies are the ONLY sector that is "exempt" from our "Anti-Trust" Laws. The only possible way to get health insurance here is via your "employer" (group insurance). So, those who are not employed are totally screwed.

  • What a classic... brilliant!

  • God I wish someone would make music like this now!

  • "But X-Factor provide us with all the best music so that we no longer need to think for ourselves" said the sarcastic man

  • @3LARI well Simon is right, because today's music is shit

  • @3LARI 'with thoughts of our own and freedom of choice Simon Cowell will go bankrupt again, that would tear apart the British way!!' added the sarcastic woman.

  • @goth1agw1omw lets all pray for a forked lightning which destroys the big brother house, bounces into and burns down hello/cosmopolitan and ok magazines, deflects into simon cowells ego and becomes a critical mass, and when we all wake up, soap operas have been banned from all households , and people suddenly decide that talent is mildly more acceptible than a perfect smile, orange cancer ridden skin and a false stutter...

  • @stonersid We need people to wake up and hear the bullshit. The common belief isn't necessarily the wrong one in all cases, it's just a matter of if it's your own belief. Following the mainstream because it's there is a whole other thing. People don't listen to bands like the blockhead's because it isn't there for them to hear and people don't think to go looking for the alternative choice.

  • @mozart579 Word.

  • @mozart579

It isn't a replication, but take a listen to the raw pleasure of Geraint Watkins' newish album, In a Bad Mood.

  • @mozart579 heres the answer GO AND DO IT....or suport someone who is.

  • @mozart579 dont worry it'll come back

    ill make sure of it

  • Gotta love it!!!
