it's bowie's earliest great song. it compares to dylan's 'song to woody'. it defines his vocal and lyrical style of the first great phase, and although it's a tad melodramatic and lacks musical subtlety - it a haunting study of being young, lonely, vulnerable, sexually ambiguous, streetwise, thin, suburban, but desperately amibitious...in the hard, all-hating world of 60s london. this song morphed into morrissey's 'half a person' and the pogue's 'the old main drag'. bowie hated MC hippies, btw.
Deram anthology, in which includes "The London Boys" and 26 other songs including the demo version of "Space Oddity" is the most under-rated Bowie album.
Surely it's about becoming a gay prostitute - listen to the last verse - "toys", regret etc. I remember this being released on a double LP with other unreleased stuff, some of which was interesting.
The song is not about being a mod in London - it's about the pitfalls that inevitably befall most young ( and naive ) people who decide to run away from home and head for the bright lights of London, only to be met with the stark and harsh realites of life in the big smoke. Arguably Bowie's best and most mature song from this period.
Brilliant, thanks, I relate to this song big time. I love this song and it goes very well with Quadrophenia. Not being a pain, but no, it's not about any other town in the world. It's about London and it's about being a mod in the 60s, although I listened to it on and on in 91 when I first came to London on my own and felt very lonely. Fortunately within weeks of hanging around in the West End, I'd made loads of London friends who took me everywhere there was to know!

Great song. Captures the feeling of being young and in a big city for the first time, finding a crowd to run with, having new experiences, and realizing your life may be a bit out of control. I dedicate it to all boys and girls in London, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Tokyo, or any other big, free, wild city that draws young folks seeking themselves -- God knows I was one once, and it changed me forever, as it will you.
This is the Best of this track no other will do - it's sung by a bowie late teens/early 20's when he wrote it - and it sums up London's West End/Soho It just reminds me of turning up there at 16 a runaway from the north - it rings true
cheers seb, had done a similar vid on my previous channel b4 it got cancelled tried to do it as much like the old one as i could remember, turned out not to bad, but dont think it was as good as the old one i did
