I think Ciaran Hinds playd Mr.Rochester just fabulous and Elizabeth Morton also. The scene where he asks her to marry him is so profound,I really lived that moment....So in my opinion this is the best version.I actually just saw the 2011 version and I was very disappointed...
He is the St John I imagined. Not the one in the 2006 or the 2011 version. He is the perfect handsom missionary Bronte describes in her book. In the other versions Mr Rochester is much more handsome than St John...
But I love Mr Rochester in the 2006 version. Toby Stephens is the PERFECT EDWARD
In all the adaptations I've seen (and I've seen everything from the 1934 to the 2006) this is the only truly handsome St.John. Kudos to whoever cast Rupert! :D However, this is the only version that makes me think Jane is an idiot for not marrying such gorgeousness ;)
If I was Samantha Morton's Jane and heard Cirián's "Rochester" say my name three times in rapid succession, the only words he would have heard whispering on the wind would have been, "Oh, shut up, you jerk!" ^_^
@HikariBelle And? Cousins may be too genetically close to be married now in some places, but then it was a non-issue. Now, if St. John was her brother, that would have been a problem :)
@femmederochester She kept insisting that she loved him as a _brother_, nothing more, making me think that she thought of him as that. Thus they were "too close" for marriage, as well as not in love.
thank you for uploading these. I didn't like the 1996 version at ALL. But this adaptation, although quite different from the book, is interesting. It adds a different dimension to the characters; and I guess that's what an "adaptation" is. But they should have made St John harder; he is too sweet and nice for her to know he doesn't love her.
If St. John would be presented in a movie the same way he was in a book - it would take time to reveal his character. From what I see the director had a goal to fit entire story to one- part movie. However he compensated it by hiring very good actors.
Rupert...yeah he is the best in persuasion. But he's too warm and friendly and CUTE to be St. John. I know St. John was supposed to be handsome, but I always thought that his features should suggest his interior...the coldness and harshness. But Rupert's countenance is friendly and warm and inviting.
in the book Jane Eyre is not carryied by a man to a house- she's going by herself. this fact shows the strength of her soul and independence. I think it should have been this way in the moVie too.
Some proposal. If some guy asked me to marry him so I could go to some unbearably hot country and die of an exotic disease, I think I would have to pass, no matter how cute he is lol.
Oh my goodness. . . I have just finished reading Jane Eyre, and RPJ was the very person whom I kept picturing as St John!! Only I pictured St Joohn as having shorter hair, like RPJ in Persuasion 2007.
I think I shall buy this DVD JUST because of RPJ! My God, he's so amazing here... still young and has not his Spooks charms, but he's charming nonetheless. How could Jane refuse him? Just like Jo March refusing Christian Bale's Teddy!
they make John nice...but in truth john didnt seek her love, he sought only a companion to help him on his travels to serve God...a wife yes, but not for love or SO i read...
Jane wanted love, but not from him even if he could give it her...her Edward is all she wanted...thanks for posting!
St. John is shown correctly in 83 and 73 versions. Here he is a nice boy who can be very well in love with Jane. Creators also decided that one sister was enough.
I like St. John from 70th version as well. His appearance wasn't even close to the book one, but he played role very well. One can feel how hard for Jane to refuse him. I agree that casting in 83 version was perfect.
RPJ's St.John is so playful, genial here. I don't see how Jane could've refused this St. John. heh As opposed to St.John of the book, where probably only someone like Bertha Mason could have melted him lol
I agree! He is too soft. You can not imagine Jane saying to him "If I married you you would kill me! You are killing me now!" and be justified. For me St John Rivers is in my memory "severe as an iceberg", "inexorable as death "and really a concealed sadist.
83rd version shows Jane's begging and suffering exactly as they were in the book. Jane wasn't just found by St. John. He is not cold fanatic who wants her just for his work here. I am sticking with 83 version.
This was uncanny since I had just watched Rupert in Persuasion and then suddenly stumbled upon this...he does do a lot of period films but he suits them very well!
Well if Rupert Penry Jones was St John Rivers in this, then I so would of married him and went off to where ever he wanted and forgot bout mr R lol ol llol llol!! He is soooo sexiii
HE IS A BEAUTY, BUT he seems far too kind and warm to me in this.... He was supposed to be cold.

St. John is the only good thing about this version....why Jane wants the abusive jerk who never stops yelling (BLLAAAAST YOOUU!!!) is beyond me. ^^

He's nice, but I think the perfect portrayal of St. John is 006 version. That was St. John.

ehm...
1)When asked her name she was supposed to say "Jane Elliot" and NOT "Jane Eyre"
2)Also St.John and Diana had another sister...
WTF??? This is the worst version!

The 83 TV version with Timothy Dalton had a fairly accurate portrayal of St.John, but I see your point.
The characters in Jane Eyre are so complex with multiple layers that it's impossible to show the underlying aspects of them in a 2 hour movie
