I don't like the statue much (the singing or the effects), but Raimondi is brilliant in this scene. Samuel Ramey always played the Don as a lovable rogue and doesn't really take his fate seriously, but Raimondi's Don is much nastier and genuinely seems shocked at 3:14. Then he gets himself back together and takes it like a man. Marvellous.
I understand using a real statue for the graveyard scene, but I have to admit I think this is kind of silly. That being said, this is my favorite Commendatore who is not Kurt Moll.
Ol' Ganymede over there sure gets a lot of love from the camera. Meanwhile, Don Giovanni wouldn't be so darn uncomfortable if he hadn't accidentally backed into the boiler room, conveniently located next to his dining room. That's some lousy planning.
This is the best film of this opera. There's simply nothing else like it. Those who complain are arguing against Raimondi, von Dam, Te Kanawa, and Bergonzi. The statue is a real statue in part because the setting is Venice, the location of many a famed marble statues.
not bad. no. 4 or 5 after ramsey koll and others out of a dozen and a half on youtube. its supposed to be 'slow' what kind of shallow attention deficit disorder response is that? well high culture gor the unwashed masses is like pearls before swine eh. God help us....long live mozart's spirit......
I hate it with a passion when the statue is an actual statue with someone singing from offstage. The fact that it's a movie is no excuse. Get the real singer onstage.
I agree with you, especially about this particular statue, which is simply horrid. Moreover, can you see ANY resemblance to Mr Macurdy in it? I can't.
well, it's supposed to be a statue and in a film it's so easy to protray it that way. anyway, the singers are all singing playback anyway... (except for the recitatives)
Because it's Lorin Maazel conducting. :P Seriously, I don't mind for this section to be taken slowly - adds to the anticipation - but in other places it can get annoying. (And this is probably one of the best things he's done!)

@gastonghi The right question should be: "why you are so idiot?"
