It is such a shame that Rachmaninoff did not allow filming of his performances. A great loss for pianists and music lovers. It is fortunate that we can see Paderewski in a movie playing Liszt.
Wow! There was video way back then? i didn't even think they had even invented electricity yet! It's kind of freaky seeing people back then. Almost like looking into a parallel universe!
We savor these little bits and pieces of this genius of music. Most everybody who knew him is probably gone by now, so this is our link with the past.
LOL, the ever present problem with videos, or in the those days movie...what should have been a still picture was taken as a movie and the poor subject never knows quite what to do with themselves. Rachmaninoff was brilliant.
If you watch Tony Palmer's movie The Harvest of Sorrow, there are lots of private videos of Rachmaninoff, made during family meetings. A true gold mine.
omg i can't believe i just watch a video of the best piano player of all time! im so happy holy crap!! I would have payed soo much money to go back in time and listen to him play. Thank you SOOO much for posting this.
There are, actually quite a few recordings of him playing. I've heard some of them, and they're even better than I expected. Of course, there's the ever-present hush of old recording sound, but that's a given for recordings from that time.
Where does this video come from, could you please tell me? To my knowledge (and that of the Library of Congress), there is no video of Rachmaninoff playing the piano (they even asked his daughters).
This is the best video ever.Think about it,he is the only great composer that we have a chance of seeing smiling for a few seconds.Trying to guess the reason why he didn`t leave a video of his playing will forever torture me.
Whose private collection is that, the relatives`?There are the same rumors about Hofmann. What are these private collectors waiting for,the right money offer?I think the chances of getting big bucks for it are diminishing every day as less and less people are interested in classical music at all.
Classic vusic becomes more and more popular because of advertising by TV, radio, etc... - the same as popular music. But pop music icons are not such immortal in timeline. The price for such Rachmaninoff videos are arising every year as the price for painting arts. Yes, of course, big bucks could make these films to see the world! :-)
"6'6!", That explains it, his fingers had to be long too, and it was easy for him to master some of the full spanded chords of his...AwESOME....Rachmaninoff had a nice soft, delicate touch, as well! Truly, a great artist!
Yes, he was the greatest composer of the 20th century, because he measured almost two meters...though little composers like Debussy and Ravel or Stravinsky wrote more interesting music ...
Rachmaninoff was the greatest composer of the 20th century and definitely an equal to any of the "holy trinity" along with Liszt despite what anyone says. It looks like he's saying "thank you" right at the end.
Such a treat! Thanks! My mother/sisters studied w/Madam Conus, a young student when the Russian Conservatory was thriving (& Godmother of Scriabin); many stories! Do you have anything on Leon Conus?
Where did you find it?

There are two greatest composers in the 20th century - Sergei Rachmaninoff and Freddie Mercury.

I agree with the statement. Nevertheless, I would not compare Rachmaninov and Freddy.

he's a lot taller than I thought he was. Does anyone know how tall this guy is???
splintercell4222 5 years ago
uve noticed well.
rachmaninov indeed was a giant.
he reached 6 feet 6 inches (198cm)
also, his hand was capable of covering the interval
of a thirteenth on the keyboard (a hand span of
approximately twelve inches(30cm))

Rachmaninff belongs in the Pantheon of greatest musicians with the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. Need I say more?
keithg1 5 years ago 3
No. You should say less. The holy trinity can't be touched, not by Rachmaninoff, and not by your opinion.
