It's an odd interview because the interviewer knows he's interviewing a famous singer songwriter, who's works are widely regarded as the greatest of our times. Given that criteria, I'm sure he assumed there was an ego or a pre-determined attitude to come along with him.
But Neil is simply human, he says what he feels, he does what he wants, and he knows he's no more special than the guy standing next to him. Ask him a special question, you get a simple answer.
As a musician and fan I love a lot of Neil Young's tunes, esp Throught the years, Harvest Moon, but I can also clearly say that musician have far too much influence in the field of politics in which so many are naieve and ignorant of the true nature of things political

Up until June 06, I only had one NY cd- Unplugged. Then my divorce slammed me. I watched the Heart of Gold dvd, and that was it. His music & who he is brought me thru that troubling time. I have been a huge fan since that time. Thanks Neil.

Did you notice, what I find a very annoying habit of many (BBC, esp.)British TV interviewers, is how they ask a Q, interrupt, then go on to answer it with some personal observation, that then usually leaves the poor Interviewee about 2 seconds & 5 words for a reply - just in case what they had to say was less important than the over-inflated observations of some TV 'personality'... In the end I found it so frustrating I gave up watching, so I never knew Pearl Jam & Neil had played together!

This interview was great. I've seen tons of interviews with Neil, and I think this is one of the most succinct and insightful. Mark Kermode, the interviewer, is actually a very insightful film critic, and I think he brings a lot of fresh energy here being a new convert. Brilliant.

Did you notice, what I find a very annoying habit of many (BBC, esp.)British TV interviewers, is how they ask a Q, interrupt, then go on to answer it with some personal observation, that then usually leaves the poor Interviewee about 2 seconds & 5 words for a reply - just in case what they had to say was less important than the over-inflated observations of some TV 'personality'... In the end I found it so frustrating I gave up watching, so I never knew Pearl Jam & Neil had played together!

G'd on the BBC; I don't suppose Mark does interrupt - this style of Qing is very pop ask Q & proceed to offer personal take = giving V little time for Neil to speak... Maybe someone could do a word count! Apparently getting an Interview w/Neil Young is tough, being quite a private person. Therefore I would much rather hear what Mr Young has to say for himself, than what Mr Kermode (who is a well-known critic, but NOT the subject of this interview) has to say for Neil Young. Sorry to Mark fans!:)

if you have ever seen another neil young interview what you would realise is that he can be quite snappy and unco-operative so if neil young thought he was being interupted he would make his thoughts known about it

Kermode is a movie reviewer rather than a music journalist, hence the stress in the interview on Neil cinematic career.
NY is more relaxed in this interview than most of the others I've seen of him, so not a bad effort Kermode....

This BBC interviewer doesn't even know who he's talking to... Neil Young is one of our country's great poets and voices of neo modern times... the journalist, IMHO, is simply someone who is trying to promote his own career in changing his tune. Neil Young continues to influence me, and millions of others aside from what this journalist is trying to sell for the sake of a job. Niel Young links to the Source, and doesn't need guys like this to let people know that Neil Young exists.... Peace...

This interview was great. I've seen tons of interviews with Neil, and I think this is one of the most succinct and insightful. Mark Kermode, the interviewer, is actually a very insightful film critic, and I think he brings a lot of fresh energy here being a new convert. Brilliant.

It's supposed to be a morally neutral statement, I think. Shortly after that he references the "decay..destruction that time has wrought on the American Dream of greatness." Seems like what he's saying is more that all these parts, good *and* bad, are the cogs in modern America. Each is equally necessary to acknowledge if you're trying to take a realistic "snapshot" of America today.
