Facebook owns everything that you say and post on their website. If you share something with your friends, they can easily share it with other people, and so on and so forth. If you don't want your opinions or information to be public, don't put it on fb. It's as easy as that.
I have my things private with no private information posted in "likes, about myself, etc". I rarely go on facebook, I don't play their popular games, and post private pics. It's the internet, why would anyone think your information is "private"? It's ridiculous if you trust any company over the internet to better handle your privacy.

It's a tough call. For one thing, Politico should use only PUBLIC statuses. And Facebook statuses even if disseminated anonymously may be portion be to recognition and retaliation by friends. and it is ethically questionable for FB to share user info with 3rd parties even if user had lax privacy settings. Seems either you have no guarantee of privacy or pay a monthly fee to fb if fb cannot sell info.
II disagree with Anna and Cenk on this one. It's a great way for collective voices/perceptions/trends/opinions to get heard with any individual being afraid of the blame. It is a social networking site! It isn't private and it isn't a civil right. We can all choose not to take part.
@FuturePants I did watch it. Privacy setting on fb means that the public can't view the comment on your page or see the message if they are "browsing" facebook. This is something different - an inventory taken of political comments without associating them with any individual. It's unauthorized polling. Yes - it's unauthorized. Guys, there are no free services on the internet. Either you pay for something and you get your privacy or you're the product being sold instead of the customer. On facebook and google specifically, you're the product being sold to advertisers. Either stop expecting "free" services and start paying or accept that you won't have any privacy. Facebook does exactly the same thing when they display ads. Ads are displayed based on your gender, age, geolocation, profession, education, etc. That doesn't mean that advertisers get your information. But it means that you will get ads from advertisers looking for a particular demographic profile. This is no different. Politico is merely getting political status update summaries based on demographic profiles. This, of course, creates a great opportunity for opponents to game the system. :)
I still can't wait until there's a mass migration to Google Plus or some other site. I'm still using Facebook because it's what everyone is sticking to. But I'm so sick of their actions. If I want to take part in a small group discussion about sensitive topics like politics or religion, all my friends and family see my comments in their news ticker. There's no way to deactivate that. The result is: I don't take part in many group discussions anymore. It really sucks.

It's a tough call. For one thing, Politico should use only PUBLIC statuses. And Facebook statuses even if disseminated anonymously may be portion be to recognition and retaliation by friends. and it is ethically questionable for FB to share user info with 3rd parties even if user had lax privacy settings. Seems either you have no guarantee of privacy or pay a monthly fee to fb if fb cannot sell info.

@FuturePants I did watch it. Privacy setting on fb means that the public can't view the comment on your page or see the message if they are "browsing" facebook. This is something different - an inventory taken of political comments without associating them with any individual. It's unauthorized polling. Yes - it's unauthorized. But it's facebook, it's not private email hacking or phone taps. If you want it to be truly private, don't use a SOCIAL NETWORK. I understand, I just don't agree.

well, if you read the agreement when you create a page on facebook it clearly states that they have a right to publish and use any information you post. it is inherently not a private site, so getting angry about it not being a private site is kind of silly. If you don't want your info used for whatever purpose they see fit, don't use their site. Its the internet, nothing is private anyway. Guys, there are no free services on the internet. Either you pay for something and you get your privacy or you're the product being sold instead of the customer. On facebook and google specifically, you're the product being sold to advertisers. Either stop expecting "free" services and start paying or accept that you won't have any privacy. There *can* be real privacy on the internet, but people simply aren't willing to pay for it.

Facebook does exactly the same thing when they display ads. Ads are displayed based on your gender, age, geolocation, profession, education, etc. That doesn't mean that advertisers get your information. But it means that you will get ads from advertisers looking for a particular demographic profile. This is no different. Politico is merely getting political status update summaries based on demographic profiles. This, of course, creates a great opportunity for opponents to game the system. :)

I still can't wait until there's a mass migration to Google Plus or some other site. I'm still using Facebook because it's what everyone is sticking to. But I'm so sick of their actions. If I want to take part in a small group discussion about sensitive topics like politics or religion, all my friends and family see my comments in their news ticker. There's no way to deactivate that. The result is: I don't take part in many group discussions anymore. It really sucks.
