I think plywood would probably be fine too, as long as the take-off spot is really flush with the ground (not sticking up for kids to bump into), and i bet a little carpet or foam pads would make it plenty soft. (and not too steep!)

we made the ramps out of foam insulation and liquid nails. i figured that would be soft enough for little bellies sliding up hill: i glued the pieces together, then cut them with a saw (a saws all with a real long blade would be great!) I think the key is to have a gentle long slope (not too steep), the longer the better, or the kids run out of gas part way up the ramp (either that, or have the slip'n'slide on a big hill).
