There are many notable recordings of Mahler's 1st symphony, but Abbado's with BPO is the best. Especially the opening of the 4th movement is so electrifying...

Abbado's conducting of Mahler First (live recording on DG) on his inaugural concert when he assumed the position of music director of Berlin Philharmoniker to succeed late von Karajan was the finest, and most exciting performance I ever know. Not only the opening, the last beatings of timpani at the very end just make you shout fervently in ecstacy : BRAVO !! I absolutely agree with ur comment, I think you understand Mahler.
