@intrc8 I am one of the ones who has a different opinion. However, reading what you said is such a lovely thing to hear. We may have different beliefs but I'd still treat you like a neighbour and respect you<3
Let those who belive, belive, let those who need shelter in it, shelter, let those who shun it, shun it. We all have our own belief, leave it at that.
TheStarks, Coventrygardens, Can you 2 agree to differ in opinions and move on. The bible is a work of fiction written down for the first time approx 700+ years after (who you refer to as) Jesus, died.
Since then we've had nearly 2000 years of bloodshed & war, over what MAN said was God's word.
If you need the bible as a shield for comfort use it. If you try to use it as a weapon however you'll burn in hell. With the Devil and all his evil goblins and tiny magic pixies feasting on your flesh. GB
I met Hazel Miller last night at a fund raiser, and I got to talk with her. SHE IS AMAZING!!!! She is so sweet and funny. I promised her that if she came back to next years fund raiser, I would sing with her.
there are tons of different groups that claim to be christian, and thus it's important to find the right one. about 5 years ago, i switched from baptist to catholic. it's important to remember that the true christian church had to exist ever since apostolic days. no protestant or baptist sect has been around that long.
also, christianity existed before the bible got written. thus, the bible can't be the source for christian doctrine. christianity would have done just fine without the bible.
That has to be the most rediculous thing I've ever read in my entire life. Christianity would have done just fine without the bible?! Who are you kidding!
The entire basis of our faith in Jesus is from the bible - His teaching, His example and the love He has shown us.
Go have a read why the reformation occurred, enlighten yourself with the works of Luther, Calvin, Cranmer et al and realise that our salvation is by Grace alone, by Faith alone, by Scripture alone and by Jesus alone.
you must have overlooked the fact that christianity existed before the bible got written. the new testament books make it clear that christianity existed before those books got written. christians couldn't have used the bible in those early days, even if they had wanted to. the protestant reformers wouldn't even have heard of christ if the catholic church hadn't preserved christ's memory through the previous centuries. they wouldn't have heard of the bible if it weren't for the catholic church.
Christianity did not exist before the New Testament, as that is what the NT is about - God's new covenent to the people. The fact Christ was prophesised and God intended it to be as it panned out is one thing; But Christ was not the God of the Jews. YHWH was / is.
Secondly, the catholic church has done a nice job of replacing Jesus as a saviour with a multitude of saints and Mary.
You need to have a look at what you believe in; The risen Lord Jesus, or an institution.
the new testament makes it clear that christianity occurred before the new testament existed. each book of the new testament was written by someone who was christian before he wrote the book, and each of those new testament books existed before the complete set was declared to be the contents of a new book known as "the new testament". surely you'd admit that the apostle paul was christian before he wrote the letters that would eventually be placed in the new testament.
Christ's death in 35ish AD and the writing of the bible in the 40-70AD period shows that the NT was written very close to the death of Jesus. And that, surprisingly, the NT is focussed on the story and teaching of Christ who, funnily enough, is the foundation of the new testament.
You're arguing rediculous semantics. Go watch John Dixon's 'The Christ Files' and educate yourself. I'm 100% you'll learn many new and mind blowing facts about our Lord and the bible.
where it says "in the beginning was the word---", the word "word" referred to the 2nd person of the trinity, not to the bible. if you read further, it says that the word was made flesh; this is a reference to christ's incarnation as a human ( jesus ). the bible did not become flesh.
actually, those bible verses ( in the book of john ) didn't even mention the bible. apparently you believe that the bible has existed ever since the beginning. the christians that are mentioned in the new testament couldn't get theology from the complete bible, because the new testament hadn't been written yet.
Where did I say the bible existed since the beginning? I'm saying the bible is the word of God. Which was created and is seen as the communication medium from the life of Jesus to Christians throughout time.
You have some warped views of Christianity. The bible is Gods word, Jesus imparted his truth, and Christianity is a result of the New Covenant God made with the world. Where is the problem here?
Christianity did not exists before Christ. We are Christians BECAUSE of Christ.
christianity did not exist until after christ's resurrection. nevertheless, no new testament book was written till after christianity began. thus the bible is not the source for christian teaching.
Christian teaching is from Christ himself; Both before his death and after his death. Since the bible is the inspired writings of the disciples and apostles of Christ, the bible is the source of Christian teaching.
Again, you're arguing pure semantics and nothing more.
you are assuming that all christian teachings wound up in the bible once the bible was completed. even if you be correct on that assumption, it doesn't change the fact that christians need clergy with a line of ordinations stretching back to the apostles. the bible contains verses showing that pattern for the organized church.
By grace, by faith, by scripture, by Christ alone.
Part of the duty in being a Christian is to learn about the bible and guide others. Clergy is a man-imposed element of the church; Not one Jesus said was required.
Remember - Church is a group of people gathered for common interest. Being together does not mean we need clergy. Matthew 18:20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.
the word "priest" and "presbyter" come from greek word that means "elder". the word "bishop" comes from greek word that means "overseer". no one can come to god the father without coming to god the son, and no one can come to god the son without coming to the clergy whose ordinations stretch back to christ's 11 apostles. this is mentioned in the bible. also, the christians in the bible were not preaching from the bible. the new testament books didn't exist back then.
If you honestly believe you need to go to the clergy to have a relationship with Jesus then I feel sorry for you and will leave my conversation there.
why even disguss if you should belive or not in god? your never gonna get an "right" answer.
just enjoy the music dammit -.-'

Church is a generic term meaning 'Group of common purpose'.
Christianity existed because of Christ. It had nothing to do with Doctrine. Doctrine is man's limitations and sin around the gospels themselves.
Finally, Christianity would NOT have done fine without the bible. Go read John:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
The bible is God communicating through it to us. No bible, no communication.

You're a goose. It's not implying the bible became flesh. It's implying the bible is Gods communication to use through Jesus Christ.

the christians in the new testament had clergy. they were called 'elders' and 'overseers', and their ordinations stretched back to the apostles.
coventrygardens 3 years ago
Elders and Overseers yes. By definition of clergy, no. Elders and overseers who taught from the bible; The Word of God.
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
The Catholic clergy are priests, who are doctrinely seen as intermediaries between you and God, by-passing Christ.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
