definetly! it's so cute, but annoying sometime! although, our little broody banty finally hatched a chick, so i'm hoping that will set her into motherhood mode and get her off the nest some! good luck, beautiful girl, I have a roo that matches her!
thanks for the advice for future! i did want one or two chicks from my batch of chickens, so it worked out, but i don't want her sitting on a nest for the rest of her life! thanks again!
Hm my grandparents use to have some chickens. They were egg laying but no rooster was around. They wouldn't get broody. The only one that would get broody was this ugly wild black hen my grandpa caught on the side of the road.
When I first started working with my chickens, I went to a friends house to meet her chickens. She had this huge hen that was being broody and my friend told me to retreve the eggs from under her. At first I was like, Your nuts thinking I am going to take eggs from a big angry hen like that. I thought the hen would attack my face!! lol she didnt (Thank goodness), and my friend wouldnt stop laughing at me because of how terrified I was of that hen. Man she was a big hen.
When they scream or peck you and fluff up like that, (usually if they are not broody, they just sit there and do nothing or get out and run away.) that means they are broody.
Ours used to stay on the nest when they got broody for hours but they didn't have a male so couldn't have chicks. We were told to try and stop them being broody by bringing them out of the nest as it can shorten their lives.
cochins are a egg hatching chicken for those who dont knwo what she is doing ill tell you she is liek this --broody-- cuz during mateing season idk like may through october they start showing signs of puffing up feathers displaying how big she is these are all signs of she is ready for offspring if you aproch a hen sitting on a nest they will puff up there featehrs and squak at you and peck at you to stay away this is just a way of she has eggs and is willing to protect them.
I had a brown Cochin that would be fluffed up when I saw her on the nest.
She didn't peck aggressively. Just a tap now and then while I collected the eggs underneath. She would cluck and look around to see what was going on.
dont worry if she isnt laying eggs or she is losing all of her belly feathers! :) my black australorp lost all her belly feathers and she didn't lay eggs because she wanted to be a mom! ( they lose feathers because they keep it warm for their nest ) and yeah its like they don't move and stuff but don't worry it took like about 3 weeks until Jewls felt better ( jewls was the chicken who was expirencing this ) :D hope i helped!
This reminds me of one of are chickens we had gracy. She was very vocal and met me at the door when I left for work to talk for a few minutes everyday. I miss her.
oh yea.. she's broody.. pecky for a fowl though. you can trigger any chicken to go broody with a fake clutch of eggs.. golf balls, pingpong balls anything that looks like eggs, and gets worm after sitting on them for a little while. i once got one of my birds to go broody with a plate with painted eggs on it.. crazy birds.
with 15 birds and a family of 5, we have a hard time keeping up with all of them laying.. so to slow things down, i'll trick most of them to be broody. this makes them a little more dossile for my 6,5 and 4 year old.

My broody hen kept doing that, even without golfballs, until I had her for dinner with mashed potatoes and dumplings, yum. She was pretty good that way.
MY cochin hens do this. Try removing her from the nest and preventing her from accessing it during daytime. Don't encourage her to be broody with golfballs, or she'll lose condition and become unwell. Make sure she eats and drinks during this period as well.
definaely lol acts just like my buff hen sunshine she has 13 eggs hatches in 2 weeks if i go near her nest she squeals and puffs up. kinda cute how they get defensive
I love how poofed up chickens get when A)they're trying to act tough or B)they're laying. I always wonder how much is feather, and how much is chicken.
well, she is broody. do you have ay roosters around because if so, her eggs may be fertile so she can be very violent to protect them. i would let her be and then you would have chicks. but, if you don't want chicks, then wait for her to leave the nest and then jump on the eggs before she shows up again
Well, She is either laying an egg or broody. Both types act the same in the situations, the ONLY way to tell is to see if she stays on the eggs through the night and spends a few days on them. You cannot tell by the way they act.
she most likely will not lay any eggs while she is in that state of mind , best thing is to put fertile eggs under her as soon as possible or the other option there are things you can do to stop her being broody .
she's definitely broody bantams go broody quite a lot if you want chicks either put some fertile eggs underneath her or put some chicks underneath her overnight or just leave her and she should stop when the golf ball doesnt hatch but please give her some space!
lol, they're so fluffy when they're like that, it's hard to resist petting them. :D

You need to take away the golf ball and put her in a bucket of tepid water for about 30 mins. This takes away her broody heat.
