Even though Jeff's cover is the first time I heard the song, this song means a lot to me. Even though the sound is slightly hazy, it gives it such an ethereal touch, just as Jeff's soul gave an ethereal touch to all he did. Years after discovering JB, I was riding my bike atop the riverside on a beautiful day after hard times. This song came on, and I've never felt more free than in that moment.
@Mygalej You're not the only one. I obviously wish Jeff could have made it his way. But I really love it. I get that some of the songs on disc two are unfinished, but I feel them. While I started out liking the more melodic ones best (Nightmares by the Sea, We Could Be So Happy, Jewel Box), I see the beauty in all of them now.
If you think this is better than the original then I question your statement that the Smiths are your favourite band. I also question your judgement and your sanity.
just listen to the awesomely damn good song and be happy. if you prefer the smiths version go comment on thier vid. im a smiths fan and i PREFER this version, in no way am i saying its better, i just prefer it. you assume too much
listen to the entire Grace album and try to tell me it's forgettable. One of the best albums of the decade, and it's been included in best albums of all time lists...don't come on here just to hate.
ps i enjoyed the songs you wrote..you know, the ones that exploded onto the national scene and won rabid praise from bob dylan (he thought buckley was one of the song writers of the decade), robert plant, jimmy page, david bowie, and other legends..oh wait, you haven't done shit. my bad
Firstly, just because Dylan, Plant and Page thought he was marvellous, it doesn't mean that I have to. Buckley never achieved any kind of success on their scale, leaving me to infer that, despite critical praise, he just wasn't talented enough to reach such heights.
PS I'm from the UK so when I do write such songs you won't hear about them because you are American.
but maybe he never reached their height cos he DIED after making only one complete record....although i gotta admit, i don't really like his second record. maybe cos it's not finished? but it wasn't gonna be close to grace anyways. so you raise a good point. uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this is awkward, i don't usually reconcile on youtube hahahahaha...i should be grateful, you guys gave us james blackshaw. but i still insist that the song grace is one of the best i've heard in a longggg lo
as a devout buckley fan, and someone who does believe that he is a fantastic song writer, i don't think that this is what makes his genius. it is invariably his covers, specifically hallelujah, that people first hear of him, and someone used to hearing the covers are unlikely to proclaim so real as evidence of one of the best songwriters ever.
it's definitely an acquired taste, sketches especially. but this is a gorgeous cover. and @whump123 when did #records sold=good music?
word. a few songs of off sketches jaammm...morning theft is great. opened once is sublime. vancouver isn't bad, and witch's rave is pretty sweet too...the second cd is nigh unlistenable though (i realize it wasn't finished, don't worry).
haha it's funny you should mention so real, i think that song is brilliant...fantastic song
yeah, i'm definitely not disputing so real's greatness, just that people who know him for hallelujah and satisfied mind will be surprised that he doesn't just play around 3 chords in all his songs with no band.
this is why people may be put off getting into the back catalogue, and suppose that because they only like hallelujah, and he went and died before being successful, despite the fact he was, he wasn't really that good...
This was recorded at the Meltdown Festival in England back in 1995. There is a soundboard of Jeff's entire set but it has never circulated because the recordings belong to Elvis Costello.
marigosu - thank you!

I like this version a lot more than the Smith one. More feeling in my opinion.

I prefer 2 think that he's up in heaven playing his telecaster and singing 4 God as 1 of the angels that he created.

to me - as a huge Smiths fan - this is by far the most beautiful and moving cover of their song...

@Rafzorz1 - Pity the ones he wrote are so instantly forgettable.
whump123 1 year ago
@whump123 The "problem" with jeffs songs is: they are not instantly REMEMBERABLE! specially for people who like more easily listenable stuff.
Whatever your personal taste, for 10's of millions of his fans his songs are UNforgettable, sorry :-)) teehee
