Cohen's First recorded cover was in 1969, from Songs from a Room. This song was written during World War II by Anna Marley, who ran a hostel for fleeing French Nationals in London.
Cohen learned the song from "the peoples songbook" whilst in Quebec in 1949

I do not know what you do for living my friend. I work in a mine 12 hours a day. My salary is only good enough to buy essential items to live. Now and again I do overtime and I spent it to buy music. Off course it bothers me where my money goes. Into pockets of people who are already disgustingly rich. What connection Cohen has, to a (probably communist) republican fighter in Spain who experienced hunger and humiliation. Do you ever understand what this song is about? Idiot.
@nebube9 this song is about the jews in occupied france(cohen was raised jewist in french canada)...
And cohen is basically broke, his manager swindled most of his cash while he was living as a budhist monk. You should probably go back down the mine.
And I dont respect your opinion, because Im not american. Where I come from you call an idiot an idiot and that is that. If you are wrong you are wrong, not right in your own special way.

My problem is both his religious beliefs and his dollars. I just paid £16 to buy one his CDs. Some of it will go to a temple or a book written to disseminate religious nonsense. Do you know when John Lennon wrote imagine there is no possession he had huge investments in real estate. We either fund their cocaine habits, their estates, or their religious beliefs by buying their music. So we waste our hard earned wages.
So you're saying that every time you've ever bought a CD, or a book, or a movie, you've personally investigated the spending habits of everyone who will profit from it?
And are you saying that musicians aren't free to spend their money as they like? Idiot.
@nebube9 I respect your opinion but buying a CD doesn't give you the right to decide how the artist spends the proceeds. You pay him money to access his art; he keeps the money and you keep the CD. Your boss doesn't tell you how to spend your wages because once he pays you, it's your money.
I have met him only 4 years ago, but I agree, he is more than a genius, that word can not define him. I can´t let go, I constantly search for new (for me) songs and my awe increases...
I would rather hear Leonard's music than hear a woman have an orgasm.

Almost 4 decades after my first audience of this song I learn through you the real story of this magnificent song. Thank you very-very much Scotty.

Are you saying that you buy albums by people you hate, just so you can judge them on how you think they spend their money? You are a bizarre person.

Great song. But let's not forget Cohen has idiotic religious beliefs and he only came out from retirement because he lost a couple of dollars.
nebube9 2 years ago
And what's your problem? His relegious beliefs or his dollars? By the way all relegious beliefs are idiotic.
