@rickwyant I agree that movies are to be entertaining, but the message here is hopeful while the message in the book is defeatist. While hope does make us feel good, it's also what spurs on courage. Defeatism and escapism that the book talks endlessly about doesn't. So, in short, I don't think this is "feely" (feelie? feeli?), and more like long-missed heroic stories of overcoming oneself. ^^

No, that was not how he died in the Huxley's novel... but what I think they were trying to show was that society was what ultimately destroyed John. After his death, Lenina and Marx have sex and take somas to relieve the "pain" and "misery" of John's death. So, it may not correspond to the story but the general idea is there.

You are exactly right! When I watched that movie this book was the first thing I thought of. Aldous Huxley was simply making a blueprint for a New World Order when he wrote this book. The Venus Project is a New World Order.

It wouldn't really hurt anyone to have a gander at Island for film, but I think it wouldn't translate very well, and would only hinder the idea... Is it possible to be both a nudist and a hedonist at the same time, though seperately? I think that it is and it's also possible to have all of the appropriate philosophies for the development of a "good life". That's how I was raised and...

It's a made for TV adaptation from 1998. It did air on the Sci-Fi Channel a couple times. There is another version that was made in 1980 that people say is more on par with the book than this version.

It may have actually been made then, it does match pretty closely the era I was considering. What I do remember about it was that they wore these awful white uniforms, and whether indicative of the age it was made or not they seemed rather unflattering and distractive. It was also about this time that I began to read Huxley, and I feel the movie version from that time influenced my vision somehow. It is kind of great that Leonard Nimoy shows in this version. ...
