Wow I remember how great this station was,And how they seemed to be almost like a college radio station playing songs like Three is the magic number by Blind Melon or Big Train by Mike watt.My girlfriend at the time had an office At the Benson East on Old York Road in Jenkintown where they broadcasted and I always wanted to go inside but the door was always locked.Man I miss those days and this station.
wow i remember the last nite of WDRE .....it still saddens me to this day to know its not there any more .... and that it was turned into a cRAP station ......seriously how many black/cRAP stations does philly need. Yes the sale of the station to Radio 1 was a poor choice only for some assclowns in ny to make a $ but that is the goal of Radio 1 group .....and you can blame Jarad communications for taking WDRE away from all of us that loved it so much
I used to listen to WDRE. I remember an online trade I made with Bret Hamilton (way before craigslist & ebay). I sent him some sports memorabilia (figures) and he sent me a WRDE shirt and CDs.
WOW! I'm from Toledo Ohio and never heard of this station till now BUT the music and all this takes me back to 96-97 Sophmore year in High School. I feel old now
Wow, I started crying during the last two minutes of this. WDRE was a major part of my middle school years. I remember recording the last morning show, the last cage match, and the last 10 minutes of airtime on my little tape player. WDRE FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!
That's right. "Dare to Be Different" was the positioning statement of WLIR... licensed to Garden City New York. JARAD Broadcasting were awarded the WLIR frequency but could not use the WLIR Call Letters so....Music Industry manager/Movie Mogul David Sonenberg (Meatloaf, When We Were Kings)suggested WDRE
too bad that I never got to listen to DRE, I was not in the states yet. well I am not there anymore either but I can listen to yrock now which is great!

Does anyone know where the Call Letters WDRE came from and what they meant?

My guess is it's short for DARE.
