Ok so for the birdie story. Had my door open to just my storm door (clear glass) one morning. Also had my window shade up on the other side of the room. Evidently the birdie thought it could fly straight through. It hit the glass so hard the door shook. It lay wriggling on the porch. I gently cradled it, brought it inside and let it rest it's injured eye and body. After awhile I placed it on a branch outside and it stayed a long while...then when I went to touch it's little head it flew away :)
Wow - I'm impressed it was OK after that big an impact. They often don't survive. I imagine it would have been a very nerve-wracking hour or so for you as you tried to help it. Makes me smile that you did though.
It was really amazing to watch this birdie recover. He'd hit the glass so hard that he left an imprint of his little eye and some tiny feathers stuck to the glass. It was a true miracle that he lived, AND that his little eye seemed to heal before MY eyes. I just kept petting his head and talking softly to him (and sobbing from guilt at having my door open). He was such a beautiful little fellow. I'm so glad he lived. I didn't even mind the birdie poop all over my hand :) (yes, I washed it off)
Michael, scary how alike we are at putting images of nature to music. The birdie made me cry and I'll tell you about that in another comment...limited characters and all of that. This video is priceless. One reason I want to visit Germany is because of a silly reason...but a favourite animated movie my son and I share is Kiki's Delivery Service, based in Germany. That movie moves my spirit. Five hundred stars for this one.
Ok, that was the freakiest video I've ever seen. First there were the Jurassic cockroaches on the flowers in the beginning, then you entered the Forest Of All Things Dead! Bugs, birds, all deceased? Was this forest possessed? I need a young priest and an old priest! Seriously, nice scenery.
LOL! Just another day in sunny backwoods Germany. Oh I've seen WAAAYYYYY weirder things than this, but I can't get permission to post them as videos...
These pictures are from just before I started on YouTube which is why they're stills, not video which they would be now. I actually kinda like the way this turned out, so your comment has made me smile!
My knee-jerk reaction is that they'd be too small for Latifolia, but everything else fits with the shape and colour and so on, so I think you're probably spot on! VERY impressive!
I don't think I was sad, more curious as to where I was going and what I was seeing. As you see in the photos, there were some pretty unusual thinks in the forest, so I was somewhat - um - distracted? I was also worried I'd get lost but was determined to not back out, until I felt I'd gone as far as I needed to.
Interesting you should say that though, and in those words. It almost exactly matches something I say in a video I'm still editing (but it's a stone I'm talking about).
How lovely! After reading the description and thinking you were going to be venturing straight into the forest (not upon any sort of road or even path, I also got nervous.) It was funny how my very first thought went all the way back to my childhood and the story of Hansel and Gretel... hoping you would be marking your path with more than breadcrumbs. I was relieved to see paths, stone steps, and houses! Beautiful video, in all.
Thanks Camille! Yeah, although it turned out to be relatively benign, I didn't know that going in! It is a HUGE forest, and I had no map, or idea where I was going or what I'd find. Also, noone knew I had gone for the walk. I kept pretty good track of the turns I made! Every other trail apart from this one is just dirt tracks through the trees. No WAY I was heading off on them!! Hansel & Gretel IS set in a German forest after all...
Very cool! I'd have loved to go there, I've never been to Europe or any other Continent, I've gotta get out more lol, I'm going to Texas for the 4th of July, so I'll be getting some interesting photography there for sure =D, very good, keep it up, I'd love to see more! You should take some of Australia for me, that's probably the country I want to go to the most.
Thanks Jordan! Yeah, there certainly is a lot to see out there. Your time will come. I travelled a lot as a kid with my family, but as an adult, didn't do my first solo trip till 21, and then started a lot more seriously around 25.
Ooh - Teaxas - where are you going there? That sounds like the most American of places to spend the 4th of July!
I'll keep my eyes open for 'Aussie' stuff. The next few vids are all Germany though! ;)
In Texas I'll be around the Austin area, i've never been to western texas, which is mostly desert, but it is much different from massachusetts, which is all forest and lakes.. boring. I love Texas I've been there several times since a lot of my family lives there =]. Have you ever been the America? If so what parts?
Um, let's see. I have family in LA and Denver, and other than that have been to San Francisco, more of Colorado, Wisconsin a couple of times, New York City, Upstate NY and transited through places like Salt Lake City, Dallas etc, but never stopped. For the rest of Nth America, I lived in Canada, been to Mexico City & out to Isla Mujeres near Cancun, and 2 weeks in Cuba (We have no restriction on travel there like you guys do.)
rofl!! Yeah, I guess it does, but most of travelling is about trying to avoid the _really_ interesting stuff! Some of it can be scary!! Slightly interesting is good. ;)
Well the first place I'm traveling once I have the means is definitely Australia! It's probably one of the most interesting countries that I know of =D you're so lucky to live there lol. Interesting stuff might happen so i'll give it a shot =]
Australia is a pretty good first choice because the language and culture are so similar to the States that it's easy to deal with, while being different enough to still feel foreign.
Thanks Gary! Yeah, it was the first Incompetech track I listened to when I was looking for something, and it seemed to fit. Then I realised it was exactly the same length as the actual video!
Speaking of photos - I did another studio/model session on Friday. A lot of fun - you should really track down one in your area!
Thankyou! :D I was just flicking through your old ones and it occurred to me that it might be the sort of thing you'd like. It was very serene and slightly spooky - I don't think I saw another person on the walk.
Yay! :D Yeah, the beetle was really shiny blue underneath. Hard to portray in a photo like that.
I like taking photos of flowers and birds (OK, live birds usually) - they seem to come out well most of the time. It also is a good indicator of what I'm looking at as I wander around.
Everything is so green! How nice to see that nature still survives in some places in the world. It reminds me of the south of Chile. Really beautufil video, Michael =)
Yes! Those forests really reflect the seasons Fabian. When I went back in winter it was entirely different. The forest I'm on the edge of is the largest one in Germany, and one of the largest in Europe. It's sort of intimidating.
I sooo want to see more of Chile - that book Recorriendo Chile that I have is really inspiring!
Oh! Thankyou for saying so! That means a great deal coming from you.
Yes, the walk was a mix of feelings, with no way to express them except to keep taking photos. Later on, I did this walk a few times, by myself or with people, and at night as well, which was interesting in itself.
The music fits reasonably well, but does't quite convey my trepidation as each step took me further into the unknown.
Vielen Dank Michael! Das ist ein schöner Wald =) Der tote Vogel war unerwartet, lol! Es ist schlecht, dass ich der Kommentar auf Deutsch schreibe, hehe.. ;)
Very true, hehe! And it is very fun to see your posts in German!
Many German words seem perfect to me in their look and meaning compared with English. But 'Tod' for death is not one of them, hehe, perhaps as I am used to it as a person's name. I think the Latin mors, mort- is the best fitting one I have come across yet =)
Hee hee hee... It's the first time I've posted in German without even bothering with the English version. I figured you'd work it out!
According to my friend the internet, death stems from the Old English dēað which in turn is from the Common Germanic dauthuz. It is surprising that none of the versions given by Leo seem to have any relation to the English word though. The Dutch 'dood' seems to be the only one in Europe - all the Romance languages use mort or similar.

I had exactly the same thought when I saw some of your stuff. It remined me so much of this video!
I haven't watched Kiki's, but I know the Studio Ghibli animation well. Porco Rosso is one of my favourites of all time!

Glad you liked it Joseph. It's now a year since I took the photos, and I'm back in the same town where the footage is from.
