hello indymogul, what are some cheap / free film editors. I'm just getting in to film editing and i don't know what program to use and i don't want to spend $999.99 to buy apple's film editors. so which ones do you recommend?
@THREEYOUNGDUDES Actually, he covered multi-track special effects and multi-camera synchronized editing... color correction and transition application... Some people want in-depth coverage others want practical effects...
I don't understand why people hate Mac....? Is it because PC is more "classic"? Or is this some weird form of anti-establishment? I don't get it, when it comes down to professional level filmmaking, Mac runs everything so much better, and can handle a LOT of files without crashing. That's always been my experience with PC, that after 100 video files it just gives up. My iMac is great!
@PiontlessFilms Macs are over priced and over rated. They make Mac out to look like some kind of Super computer...their NOT. Sure they look pretty on the outside and its something new from the good ol Windows but the truth is, they freeze just like PC, they're slow and stuborn. Mac arnt compatable with any other computer system but Apple. PC accepts everything from itunes, Quick time, Xbox360, PS3, PSP. I'm a film student, a project takes weeks in Final Cut, takes days in Sony Vegas.
It's not that I hate macs... it's more that I don't like having to pay out the ass for the same hardware i can get for half the price. I also like the fact that I can find any program I want for free with a PC. From what I hear windows 7 is gonna be tha shit... a new XP and should fix everything. BTW I said screw CS4, and started using Sony Vegas and it is tha shit.... no problems what so ever...
Man its each to their own..its your weapon weapon of choice and all that... I use 4 different edit systems (mac and PC), but my best work comes off FCP. Personally if somebody comes out with a better system.. I'll go for it
From someone who claims to appreciate brevity, the first two minutes are a complete waste. A failure of editing is not a good sign, a lack of expertise.
Why do you hate them? I love Mac's for everything except buisness applications, Try using excel and word with Mac. Alot harder than it needs to be....
hmmm...I installed divx and that brought up the video picture but still only sound.... then I imported my avi files to after effects saved the file and import it into premeier and it works... idk wtf is going on lol.
Despite the cheesiness of this how to video, I think the only real problem with this video is that this guy has his Emmy in front of his lap top. Does anyone else have a problem with that?
That guy can shove his Emmy up his ass for all I care.
can anyone help me? i need a new reLLY EASY TO US editing software that is free and available from the internet. I'm currently uing WMM, but i can't work out how to cut bits out of my movies on it. Can someone at least help with that?
Thanks for the compliment, haha :D 4 Minutes of Indy Mogul = 1 semester of High School!!! :D
hahaha But seriously, those tips are geared towards speed and efficiency in editing. As a freelancer, those are important attributes. If you're a staffer, you can be as slow as you like. :)
yeah it was really fast but i did learn how to use multiclips and i had never moved a image across the screen so i did learn that but i had to watch the vid a couple time b4 i really understood what he was doing. i think u guys should do a 20min episode on fcp to show the basics. also i would like to see an episode on color correction
And just how much money were you going to be making surfing youtube for videos anyways? I mean, if you had money to make, you wouldn't be screwing off on the internet.
Unless, of course, you separated yourself from your money making activities just to watch Indy-Mongul. In which case, I can't imagine the work you were doing was all that profitable to begin with.
The short of it is, your time appears to be near worthless so reimbursing you for 1.5 minutes would be a waste of effort.
I agree. A Premiere Pro CS3 vid would be great, or a vid just about color correction (1 area where I still need to work on) which would be the same principles on both.
I know FCP is the standard, but a few weeks ago I had a chance to compare FCP side-by-side with the newest version of Premiere, and Premiere seemed to have more features and took less work to create the same scene.
I agree with you that looking into doing tips for other platforms/systems is a good idea. There are a lot of people who use Vegas or Windows Movie Maker or whatever comes with PCs, and I think those are largely overlooked.
In this case, I was asked to do an episode, and the system that I use is FCP. I tried to be as universal as possible with tips on how to use scopes and color correction filters, but yes, a lot of it was specific to FCP.
When you're running an editing system on a computer, it's not smart to upgrade until A) you have a GOOD reason to, such as new features that are only available with the next OS, and B) everybody else does it first so you can benefit from their bug reports on the forums.
There are no benefits relevant to FCP in upgrading to the next OS, yet there are lots of people that needed to uninstall after running into system errors.
You have 2:06 of filler before you actually start delivering what's in the subject line. That's a full 3rd of the running time, and half as long as the actual content!
Imagine if a 90-minute movie had 30-minutes of opening credits...
Steve was setting up the new premise to 4MFS, I think we can cut him a little slack this episode. It's not like it took away from the 4 minutes of educational content anyway.
If that's the case then they should add that to the title. "Editing tips plus a not-too-funny comedy bit where I talk to a stopwatch and find an ipod with a talking guy."
As you can see, that makes the video sound a lot less appealing. When an accurate description of your video sounds unappealing, that usually means you need to cut it down to an interesting subject and focus the video as much as you can on that subject.
I'm only pointing this out BECAUSE it's supposed to be about editing.
Sheesh, cry me a river. It's simply an introduction to the show. If you can't handle being presented with a premise...then maybe you should take this up with whoever invented stories and plots.
And to respond to your 90-minute movie comparison...it's more like the first 30 minutes being the first act of the three part arch. Which most movies follow. So, if you want to make that comparison...I'd say I followed the rules pretty well.
As far as it not being funny goes, well, you can't please everyone all of the time...or even anyone all of the time. But I'm satisfied with it and I wouldn't cut it down a bit.
No, because the first 30 minutes ARE the movie. That's what you came to see. People come here to see editing tips from an Emmy-winner. This beginning is not that in any way, shape or form. Do you see?
That's brilliant. Why don't we replace all film instruction with just adding "suck it up!" to the credits. That way no one learns anything, right? Right?
Final cut was the industry standard for a while until about 4 years ago. Now it's Avid you see in the credit reels a lot and I hope it becomes standard because its a Pc program :p but right now it's a battle for who is going to take the industry.
Well there are loads of programs. I have sony vegas which is good, then there's all the Adobe editing programs. Anyway Final cut pro is only for mac isn't it, so I dobt it will be standard given how many people still use PC.
I used to have Adobe actually and I really liked it for some things. I don't know, it seems like more and more film students are used to final cut. I haven't used Sony Vegas, how is it?
Sony vegas is good. Well it's good enough for me, it's easy to use and you can get good results. I bought it because it came out on top in a test on a technology show.
It would be nearly impossible to cover tips for every program out there in one show. Something to think about for future episodes, however. We can only use what we have at our disposal as well, and we're editing on Macs with FCP.
I edited on PCs for nearly all of my homebrew video production life. However when I got a job in this field, the defacto thing to use was a Mac and FCP. Better to learn on that as soon as possible, because if you want to move on in the industry, you'll be using it.
Exactly, though it seems a lot of Film Productions are still cut with Avid. But the price tag on Avid is insane. With the popularity of FCP and if Mac keeps pushing it could very well become industry standard in the very near future. Best to learn FCP, Avid (if you have access to it), and even Premiere though I haven't run in to it that much outside of my own work.
many of the tools are pretty universal, yet, if you are a keen proffesional movie editor who wants to work for an editing company, you should probably look into getting final cut, because that is the widely accepted industry standard.

adobe premier is the most user friendly.
FCP is ok but apple are up their own asses and dont make a pc version.
avid is good, real good but you need a PHD to understand the program and not at all user friendly.
