  • @boncos95sjtj We are called many types of dancers. ITS NOT JUST SHAWL!!!!!! Most pow wow MC's call us the BUTTERFLY DANCERS. Some call it other wise. Im a dancer myself.

  • To the people who keep wondering what her damn fringe is made out of its ribbon. Plain ole neon colored ribbons! Not pleather or yarn. That crap is too heavy.

  • ya! it's ribbon don't u know. lots of girls use that now dayz. doesn't it look awesome, LOL!

  • @Scabzilla49 Of course some dancers use chainette fringe. But chainette fringe nowadays is considered "Ol Style"!

  • very smooth movment....

  • wat iis that material she used 4 the fringe. off tha hook

  • looks like yarn no?

  • i'm native n itz call "fancy shawl dance" i dont c why people call it"native american butterfly dance" it soundz kinda korny.

  • I read it was started in the 1960s by some grass-dancers getting ready for a pow-wow, who were chasing butterflies that flew out of their sweet clover cuttings. Somebody started playing a warm-up drum and the girls started keeping time to it. At grand entry, a few of the girls actually entered doing this step. It was initially categorized as a fancy dance but later given its own category. But I love the story of the widow too, even if it's not for real. And that outfit ROCKS. Jay, Aniyunwiya

  • i agre completly once we danced at none native powwow and they called us the "sumint prerie dancers" IMEAN COME ON THINK OF SOMETHING BETTER RLEZ!!!!!!! any who she was great butiful movment :)

  • what does she use for the fringe on her shawl?

    it`s not ribbon..

    i`d like to find out.

  • Maybe it's dyed leather strips. Or thick braids of some material or cloth.

  • it looks lighter then leather

  • What makes you think it's not ribbon? Because I also noticed it. I thought it looked like ribbon, but I assumed she doubled it or something to make it fuller. Now I'm trying looker closer and it's hurting my eyes. LOL Now I must know what it is!!

  • All of your statements are very smart...... Its looks like leather maybe, but ribbon tooo,....looks to light 2 be leather........my guess: Mybe plastic ribbon confeti.....or like a colourful light cloth. we wonder

  • If anyone desires a wish to come true they must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.

Since they make no sound, they cant tell the wish to anyone, but the Great Spirit

So by making the wish and releasing the butterfly it will be taken to the heavens and be granted.

To-day we have chosen to keep this tradition alive by performing this unique form of Indian celebration.

Please add your own silent wish to assist them on their way.

  • Thats a badass outfit!

  • U.N.I.T.Y. is going to Oklahoma this summer of 2007. Natives from all over the nation will be there with their tribe. Come meet new people, share your culture. Their will be entertainment; food and dances. Their will also be workshops for college and health...Last year UNITY went to Buffalo, NY, and it was fun. Research some more about it. See you there!
