I also wanted a lot fewer remakes and boring ballads from George Michael. I was listening to his Greatest Hits CDs and I found myself skipping through much of his material. I think drugs, legal problems and depression zapped his creativity and he just didn't have very many strong tracks like "Monkey" to give us. In my estimation, "Fastlove" is his crowning jewell of the lot. I think he peaked with that one.
