For these weather conditions , I recommend RAIN X, Is a Rain repellent that works very gooooooooddd, I`ve been in heavy storm conditions (Panama, Bogota) and that product really help me... Probably you`re gonna ask for the windshield wipers... I didn`t even need them!!! Spray over your window before the flight ( of course) and then clean it with a dry wipe
@madsticks360 Wrights brothers gave all their potential to make this dream of flying come true, like this different people in the world will be connected... they thought that aviation will end wars... it's a shame that we use such a beautiful thing to fight each other, and to kill poor innocent people by bombing their houses, so I think that the great way to start is to choose the civil way... Assalam arlikoum (peace be upon you)
@madsticks360 Sure, you can join the Airforce! But I would not recommend it because you still gotta serve war time which means the possibility of death, and you have to go through boot camp training. Civil might not be so cheap but its the safest. Speedbird1's example is fine but if you going to get someone to pay for it, be respectful you dont want to be caught disrespecting your family. If they say NO then thats it. Show them that your responsible enough to handle it. ;) You already knew this
Yeah, Nothing is better than straight 35knots crosswind or a little tornado in front of your 172, just love the whirll, and you don't even need ground service after all...
The ils consists of a Localizer and glideslope. The localizer radio beam is the lateral one and the Glideslope is the vertical.
You can fly an ILS using the autopilot or by hand.We normally only use the autoland if the visibility is lower than the minimum needed for a manual landing.Autopilotsare generaly not very good in very windy weather, though some of the latest ones are not too bad.The 737 autopilot is a bit `agricultural` so we dont autoland unless we have to.
OMG this landing must be very difficult for the pilots.but what you mean by ; the latest ILS ARE NOT TOO BAD?! you mean still not accurate or nt precise?
What varient of the 737 do you fly? And do you hae LAND2 only or LAND3 Capacity. On the 747-400 and 767-300ER we usually will fly the approach down to mums with the A/P Coupled in APP hold, then take over and land by hand at D/H. Unless the winds are out of limmits. 25KTS cross, and 10KTs tail is our wind componate, That all changes in shear conditions though.
Mostly is a saftey issue, takes some of the work load off of us during a very critical phase of flight.
You are wrong about the autoland never being used in good conditions. The FAA requires CAT III capable aircraft to test the equipment is functional to the manufacturer specifications on a regular basis and file a report on the success of the system regardless of conditions. This reduces the risk of malfunction when the system is truly needed.
Obviously, in context, Im speaking as a practical measure. FAA may require an occsional test. But as a practical measure pilots hand-fly the landing unless its the very worst of visibility.
Which obviously makes sense, since any skill tends to diminish if not used regulary. As such, its more important for the pilots to keep their flying skill sharp, since autoland isnt suspect to a lack of profficiency.
Most aircraft now and days use ILS in clear or stormy weather but when a pilot is cleared to land the pilot mus decide if he will take control or let the ILS take control
awesome video...i fly 172s right now, and i landed in a small thunderstorm that rocked us comning in.(winds were only around 30 knots but they kicked our little cessna s ass. 5 stars from me
They are the `RETL` lights (Rapid exit taxi lights....[or something like that]) they give you a count down to the rapid exit taxiway.Generallyon the 737 if you are doing about 90kts by the first set then you are slowing down enough to take that exit ok.The first ones have 3 lights the next have two then 1.Quite useful.
sorry thats wrong they are PAPI Lights they are a reference to tell the pilot if he/she is on the correct desent path known as approach. There are four lights two are white and two are red suggeting that the approach path is perfect. For example if lights are all white = two high = all red to low
The PAPI lights are the ones just to the left of the runway touchdown zone. The amber lights on the centre line on the rollout further down are the RETL lights.
Good job, looks like you are getting pushed around a lot there!. Gatwick is around 40nm from my QTH so I often listen to arriving aircraft. I'd love to fly!.
Yes it was quite sporting that night. The wipers are next to useless which doesnt help much !Anyway it beats working for a living(well some of the time anyway)

just one question...can a pilot use Autoland if the weather is good enough for a manual landing?

i think yes but it is better when you use manually.

yes

it depends... if the airport is CATIII Landing and the pilots have the raiting too...

im 19 and considering aviation, what's a great way to start out ? Airforce?
madsticks360 3 years ago
Airforce, civil its upto you.If you can get someone else to pay for it thats the main thing!
Personally I have always done civil but many guys go Airforce then Into civil later on.
If you want Airforce then you need to be young.
There is lots of info on the Net from pilots organisations and from the military.
Its a great job most of the time.
I wish you luck!

They always hand fly the landing. Autoland is never used, unless visibility is under mins, and there isnt enough fuel to divert elsewhere.
ILS simply is a specific set of radio signals that can cue the pilot to localizer and glideslope.

Sorry,I meant generally autopilots cant cope with very gusty conditions. They tend to over control too much and can just disengage.

True.
In some older aircraft you don't even have the luxury of autoland.
