As for the song "I Stand Alone", officers may not stand alone when it comes to "warm bodies" but how many have been in a 100 to 2 ratio situation in a place were the public could care less about their police officers? In a lot of rural areas cops (mainly troopers) are without back up. Take my state of Connecticut for instance, there are many small rural towns that are too small to have a police force so they have one resident state trooper whom patrols the streets and responds to calls with backup 10-20 miles away, and thats just in connecticut which is a very small state in alaska its even worse.

Wow. So 1/100th of 1% of officers are "bad" or corrupt or whatever you want to call it. If that same percentage of average citizens were the same way we wouldn't even need police.
As a professional firefighter/SWAT medic I can honestly say I respect both professions and they are equally difficult in different ways. The comment explorer posted explains why he must still be exactly that, an explorer! That's as bad as some of the jokes firemen tell about COPS.
I don't know, a patrolman is out on the streets for his entire shift whereas a firefighter is most of the time relaxing in a fire station waiting for a call. And when they do get it a call its 90% of the time for paramedic/EMS service, not deadly fire's.
I think firefighters do an important job, but there is no question as to which profession is deadlier and provides a more wide variety of services. Fact, each year the mortality rate for Police Officers is higher vs. firefighters.
Firefighters dont just "relax" waiting for calls, most of their time during the day is spent training, they have a few hours of down time in the evening. We dont just sit around, and yeah most of our runs our medic runs but they are equally important. But to say we just sit around relaxing is ignorant, because thats far from the truth.
Well, it was a little farfetched, but my main point still stands that a patrol officer has a much more hazardous and demanding job on a regular basis. Every traffic stop can potentially be deadly. Every domestic violence call can go bad, etc. Not to mention cops are usually the first responders to fire's themselves and begin evacuating people before the FD even get's there. Too be fair, cops are usually better compensated than firefighters.
I've been a cop for 9 years. And I know that when I get hit and someone is cutting off my gunbelt and vest to try to save me, it's going to be a fireman. That's why we're called public safety. Can't have 1 without the other.

@johnm543 I am a member of my department's SWAT team. We are patrolmen that do our regular duties as police officers but train in the event that we get called out. Most of your agencies have SWAT teams but they are not full-time SWAT. Example...my home town, West Monroe, LA, has a SWAT team made up of officers from patrol, street crimes, detectives, etc. Places like Los Angeles do have fulltime SWAT teams because the callout load is so high. Not so in smaller towns/cities.

I believe it takes a special person-insane rather to be able to go out there and put their life on the line at times for someone they don't even know. How many of you can say you wake up, put on a bulletproof vest and a gun at your side and go to work. My hat's off to any man/woman doing that. This includes any other emergency response as well.

It depends on what state you are in. For example, in Florida the age requirement to become a police officer is 18, however in Texas it is 21.

Ok, at least in Illinois, you must be 21 to become a police officer. You may become a Community Service Officer (CSO) at 18. its the jobs that Cop s hate doing. parking tickets, towing cars, traffic direction, etc. BUT, you DO NOT HAVE ANY AUTHORITY AS A POLICE OFFICER. you arent a copper. you do the shit jobs is all.

As a professional firefighter/SWAT medic I can honestly say I respect both professions and they are equally difficult in different ways. The comment explorer posted explains why he must still be exactly that, an explorer! That's as bad as some of the jokes firemen tell about COPS.

I don't know, a patrolman is out on the streets for his entire shift whereas a firefighter is most of the time relaxing in a fire station waiting for a call. And when they do get it a call its 90% of the time for paramedic/EMS service, not deadly fire's.
I think firefighters do an important job, but there is no question as to which profession is deadlier and provides a more wide variety of services. Fact, each year the mortality rate for Police Officers is higher vs. firefighters.

Firefighters dont just "relax" waiting for calls, most of their time during the day is spent training, they have a few hours of down time in the evening. We dont just sit around, and yeah most of our runs our medic runs but they are equally important. But to say we just sit around relaxing is ignorant, because thats far from the truth.

Well, it was a little farfetched, but my main point still stands that a patrol officer has a much more hazardous and demanding job on a regular basis. Every traffic stop can potentially be deadly. Every domestic violence call can go bad, etc. Not to mention cops are usually the first responders to fire's themselves and begin evacuating people before the FD even get's there. Too be fair, cops are usually better compensated than firefighters.

@johnm543 I am a member of my department's SWAT team. We are patrolmen that do our regular duties as police officers but train in the event that we get called out. Most of your agencies have SWAT teams but they are not full-time SWAT. Example...my home town, West Monroe, LA, has a SWAT team made up of officers from patrol, street crimes, detectives, etc. Places like Los Angeles do have fulltime SWAT teams because the callout load is so high. Not so in smaller towns/cities.
