Over here, people are way more dependent on cars and gas, 1) because of the size of the country and how spread out things are unless you live in a big city, and 2) because that's how the culture has (unfortunately) progressed. Now, even though we DO have it cheaper than 99% of the world, it still hurts when prices go up because we USE it way more often than other countries.
The Average Miles per year in the US is 15,000 and in the UK, it is 10,000
The main thing that has been an issue in America is that most people like to massive V8 Trucks with painfully low fuel economy and you have been able to get away with it for the most part, until now. Even Americans are having to economize with smaller cars.
But your fuel is still cheaper than everyone else's
@FatRakoon I won't disagree with the large car part. I hate seeing those monstrosities on the roads. But, it IS true that the economy is based on a larger traveling populous. I wish I had official statistics I could show you... I will search. But in any case, a large number of people live anywhere from 25 to 40 minutes away from their work (and that's driving at an average speed of 50-60 mph, or 80.45-96.54 kph). I'm not saying it's anyone's fault, it's just how it is.

Hey, Gas prices aren't going to stay down forever. Are you prepared for inflationary depression? How much do you think inflated gas prices are going to be this summer? Yeah, lets stop complaining, hey, even if we have to turn the kids out to pay for the gas we can't afford to get to the underpayed jobs we don't have anymore, we should just stop whining. I would dare to say that bending over and taking whatever they have to give with no complaints trumps prayer as the new american passtime.
