I have used virtualdub in the past to edit my videos but is quite fiddly when you just want to cut bits out and join and change brightness etc. I use iSkysoft Video Converter Ultimate now v3.03 because its a lot faster on multi core systems then v2.xx I love the features of it and I actually have posted a quick video on it on here ;)

If you have Windows, it already has a built in sound recorder in Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder. It will record what ever is playing on your computer.

@cenaaa4ever if you delete the program, as you're probably trying to do, then, yes, the program it might be tied to will no longer function. Since you're trying to delete it, you don't have to worry about it.

okay i got CamStudio. But...like ALL the screen recorders i try to use- i CANT use them in Movie Maker and I cant see the playback in Media Player.....even tho CamStudio had a media player. If this has somethin to do with codecs- i have no idea how to correct the problem. I cant find a screen recorder that works! I need one. CamStudio is nice but...whats up with my puter?? Part of the problem might be that in order to create a video that plays back at 30 frames per second, it needs to capture a frame every 33 1/3 milliseconds. The closest value it will accept is 33, so each successive frame is captured 1/3 milliseconds too soon, and the video will gradually go out of sync.

The only values that work are ones that are evenly divisible, so you can use 200 fps, 100 fps, 50 fps, 25 fps, etc...

To record sound in Camstudio, you need to first get a webcam or microphone. You need to go into options and enable "record audio from microphone". If you want to play audio from our computer, enable "record audio from speakers"
