Sublime! Im still discovering the incredible works Steve Reich. For anyone else new - I was instantly taken by this song also: Music for a Large Ensemble - Steve Reich
I love this song. This is my favourite one out of the album. I believe the sole purpose and ability of music is to change one's mental disposition. I believe traditionally music does this through tonal contrast but i Steve Reich is a new age of composers who attempts to do this through rhythmic contrast.
Personally, at first, i am still finding it hard to grasp.
@rubensalceda Steve Reich recorded it twice, first soon after the 1976 premiere, and again on the Nonesuch label in 1998 (which is the version included in the 2 Nonesuch Reich compilation boxed sets). The 1976 was rereleased in 2000 and is still available as a cd and an mp3 download @ amazon. There have been 2 other recordings of it in addition to this one.
I HAVE TO BUY THIS!!!!! I was introduced to Reich's music in 1977...ROFL...my first response was....is the record broken?!? I "got it" pretty quickly, though. The Music for 18 Musicians soon became one of my all-time favorite works. That these young musicians had this chance to play this and perform it for Steve Reich almost brings me to tears.
"Minimalism" as they so call it, can tend to have an ambient quality to it due to the repetition in it. A piece like this always puts me in a relaxed, almost trance-like state. So yes, you could call it minimalist...but you can also not that it has ambient qualities to it...etc.etc.
Labeling music isn't really the point though, this is a wonderful piece no matter what people consider it as.
Great music and very well played, thanks for uploading. But it is hard to believe what I read, that it is so popular one even hears it in bars. I cannot imagine that it goes with beer, wine, champagne or schnaps. Green tee might be a good choice. If I were a barkeeper I would not chose it as bar music for fear of going bankrupt.
it's actually not prounced as the German. It has the soft 'sf.' I've seen performances with him in it, and that's how he pronounces it. He's a NY Jew, not a German, so like many Americans, the pronunciation has evolved. Sometimes the Brits pronounce it with a hard "Ch," but they also say Cant for Kant, etc.

Hi
I uploaded a remix of Steve Reich´s Movements part 3...
I postet it as a video response.
I know it´s poor to promote his videos in comments and I understand if this is marked as spam.
But I´m just looking for some feedback and I don´t know where to get it from.
My remix was actually part of a competition, ended up 60th of 250 competitors...
Thanks in advance

Absolutely mesmerizing and enchanting. I can't help
smiling and shaking my head in wonder as it flows
and tumbles through its playful changes and frame
shifts. As though Reich has tapped into the elfin
music of atoms, light and galaxies as they whirl
their cheerful, unending dances in time. And there
is no doubt in my mind that musical hearts from
Johann Sebastian to Igor would have dug it.
