Please could someone tell me why people wait this long before seeking medical help? I mean if there is some area of your body that is starting to swell up, for god's sake, go before it's 10x the normal size, or something falls off of you that doesn't normally rot & fall off.

My Mum's in hospital this week under going an abdominal tap to remove 9 litres of ascitic fluid. She's in a hell of a bad way with terminal ovarian and bowel cancer. Their are some pretty close guesses here. The true underlying cause of ascites in most individiuals is low blood albumin (produced in the liver). Albumin is the major oncotic component of blood, without it, there is almost nothing to keep blood within vessels and it begins to move into places of lower hydrostatic pressure (peritioneum) (legs) etc.
