I see 7 men on stage, not all of whom have black suits. That one might move forward two is no black and white chessboard move, but to dance a collapse successful over the feedback, elide by glide the tripwire cord, certainly deserves the grand O Lord! Mr.Cave here delivers in lieu of homage to the Jackass generation by way of crashing graceful boardwalkward like a rolling stone in search of she sells.
@Siste4366 i would say that you have a very limited range of taste in music and should stick to noise-rock if that's what you specifically only like. Try Melt-Banana or The Blood Brothers or something, jesus
i don't know Tom Waits has a pretty normal life, wife kids etc or whatever and makes interesting records... Cave's problem is since his main interest was pleasing himself or pursuing various obsessions etc...good except his songs are becoming more and more autobiographical. which begs the question why should anyone care now? before he had cool allegories and such but now it's like he just bitches or writes sappy love songs. his muse has abandoned him and that's the point... is it interesting?
@flagrantsake No, it is not his muse abandoned him. It happened are some significant changes in the band. First went Blixa, and then Mick. They were the two key figures in bend.Today, Bed Seeds missing the sound of Blixa guitar. This is the only reason why today Bed Seeds sounds a little different...
Fantastic! Always loved this song! Made this Alblum when Nick was coming off smack! there was more than one battle going in those days! there is a documentry about it somewhere, I saw on SBS one night. Thanks for posting this wonderful music!
I just cannot figure out what this song is about? Is the protagonist going insane? What is going on? I have a good grasp of mr. cave's songs, and I love this one a lot, but the meaning, or the "plot" escapes me. any help?
I always took it as a fairly literal trip through his day. Him walking around, people recognizing him, giving him grief that he's 'grown soft' and that 'he's not the man he used to be' etc. The part that drives him insane is that he's found new creativity and a new, peaceful(ish) life only to have people who knew him from the wild days wanting him how he was, not accepting nor letting his growth. Only accepting him one way thus 'admit they hardly knew me' At least that's my take.
ashburnhouse: true, pretty much all of Nick Cave's album tends to be a giant story with each song being part of that story. Murder Ballads being a good example of his style.
Um, Murder Ballads wasn't part of one story. Henry's Dream is, and sometimes songs have callbacks to others (Song of Joy says "All Things Move Towards Their End" as it was said in Loverman, More News From Nowhere mentions Deanna, and a couple others I can't remember right now) but that's about it. They usually share an overarching theme if that's what you mean.
As much as I like this interpretation, I think it somewhat underestimates Nick as a song writer (sorry, no offence intended!)
I looked up the references (like the "sword of damocles") and they're all based on heavy literature, often biblical. This makes me think that there is likely a deeper meaning.
Personally I always thought it was about him going insane - for example the way this song starts refined and becomes hectic and almost uncontrolled is reflective of the protagonist's state of mind
It starts softly with him talking about what a perfect life he has - his wife, his kids, you just think he's another normal guy, then he goes for a walk, and as he does he starts to unravel.
As the song gets more and more frantic, his fake reality disintegrates and you get an insight into his real life - e.g. the paranoia about the hairdresser & his own reflection, and his wife is actually not real, he's just a stalker.
(I could write an essay on this). But hey, thats just my interpretation!
i agree with what you say mostly.....but the stalker part.....i think its about a man who has lost everything and now his sanity, i do think he has a wife, but one that dosnt want him in her life no more, but otherwise i enjoyed reading your posts =)
i love the " im sitting at the hairdressers, people watch mw as the move past, a guy wearing plastic antlers presses his bum against the glass" its a classic, love Nick
Well lets be honest, there such deep meaning in this song, and your fave lyric is the one containing the word bum?! Check out Green Eyes, it has the word "Fucker" and "Cunt" in it.

Oh. My. God. Love this song. Glad to see a live version. Warren Ellis = Paganini gone mad. Amazing. Pardon me while I pick my dropped jaw up from the floor.
Oh, Jesus! He NEVER does this live in the UK -- I request it at every show I see. This is my favourite ever Nick Cave song, and this performance is unbelievable: Fresh from losing PJ Harvey, fresh off the herion... the despair is amazing. Compare it to the rubbish he's writing today: "If you got a trumpet... blow it!" And, by the way, lyrically, musically, vocally, and in terms of the production, No More Shall We Part is his greatest achivement.
"Oh my lord" --- that's what im feeling everytime i hear this song. it gives me chills. every single time. probably my favorite nick cave song right now.
Fantastic. "And no more shall we part" is one of THE greatest albums ever and this is a tour de force. Alienation, ego, vunerability, paranoia and a huge finale. Cant ask more he?
xno153x, there are still great musicians out there it's just they don't play on radio. You need to actually search for them. And by the way, if this is Cage as a has been that really says a hell of a lot about how great he was in the past. He's hardly a has been in my opinion, by the way.
I wouldn't go as far as saying that there are any new GREAT musicians or artists out there, be on the radio or off-mainstream, most of those who are still relevant are old folks.

nocturama might not be his best but no more shall we part probably is,its got this song, god is in the house, i sat sadly by her side and 3or4 more high standard songs, someone whos been around for this amount of time deserves applauding, and some of the best songs ive ever heard came from his mind. tupalo, mercy seat, straight to you, into my arms, love letter, breathless, and to many more to remenber off the top of me ed.
an album can't be cave's best if each and every song in there isn't excellent.. that's why I would take from her to eternity or henry's dream any day instead of no more shall we part... but that's just me.
You can tell Blixa is leaving, he's checked out. I've never seen him so disengaged, even strung out. It was still incredible, regardless.

I once had a ho
Who hadn't let me know
Her other lover was a twin
And some other guy came in
Between them, and he did not like
Me; like me he once had a ho who hadn't
Offerred a lack of knowing like a Holy Ghoest.
