  • we need that up here in cairns

  • The blatant use of the Go Card roll-out as a revenue/profit grab is morally reprehensible and socially irresponsible. The massive increase in the cost of a paper ticket is an outrage; unfair and unjustifiable. I prefer a paper ticket; it suits me fine; now I'm being discriminated against; In affect fined for not wanting to purchase their superfluous Go Card. SHAME on the minister and the other greedy leeches responsible for this pathetic and farcical case of mismanagement.

  • @Tuathalful

well if you dont want to contribute to the revenue grab it would seem the solution is to get a go card

  • @SweepSooSooty

Yeah I know. I'm left with little choice if I want to minmise public transport costs. Still, its bloody frustrating XD *sigh

  • @Tuathalful

How is it frustrating? just go and get one.. then it's done. You'll be laughing.

  • @SweepSooSooty

It's frustrating because I'm being compelled to enter into a contract requiring me to purchase future travel I may not require in the near future. Haven't you noticed the encroachment of ever more lengthy contractual arrangements with business so many rely on? It's bad enough I have to sign on, with exit fees attached, to particular gas, electricity, phone and Internet companies, now I need a contract to pay the price I used to pay for the bus?

  • @SweepSooSooty cont.

I admit some companies offer good deals on contracts to entice, but I don't feel raising paper ticket prices to push us onto contracts is right. We haven't been enticed, but manipulated cynically by bussiness and politicians; this is annoying in my book.

  • I have calculated that if your traveling to and from the city 14 times a week (full time work) through zones 1-6 the Go Card is $80 a month more expensive than a monthly. The Go Card is 31.3% cheaper than standard single ticket but the monthly is 48% cheaper. Hence its only good for casual travel.

  • Full time work is 7 days a week in Australia!!!

I think you mean 10 times (most full time jobs are 5 days a week, no?)

Now recalculate. Is it still a bad deal?

  • 10 times I mean, thanks. Why would the figures change anyway? The Monthly is still 17% cheaper than the Go Card.

  • having the coin/ticket system is great as a backup though.

  • @TCFan25 Thats why I always keep a few dollars on me if I have forgotten my go card :)

  • @coolbonzo12345 Lucky I won a free give away card..considering I rarely use P. transport. All paper tickets are scrapped by the end of this year anyway

  • @TCFan25 R u serious! so they are definately scrapping the paper tickets... it is just that translink have been talking about it for a while and have not really got round to it :)

    x

  • @coolbonzo12345 yes Iam serious... thats why they were giving away 400K of them.

  • I find it works well if you rearrange your wallet so that the card will sit closest to an outside edge. Also, if you are a UQ student, your student I.D actually has a RFID chip in it too, so it can interfere. So put your UQ I.D on the opposite side of your wallet, with as many cards as possible in between, and you wont get the 'Invalid Card' red light.

  • RFID = Sigh.

  • Yeah, don't forget your tinfoil hat mate >_>

  • What an original thought...did you come up with that all on your own?

    Sheep.

  • I did in fact, very witty IMO.

I just think it is stupid to be paranoid over something little like a Go Card...Out of the contents of my wallet, the Go Card would hold the least personal info about me. Things like my Credit Card, Drivers Licence, Student Card etc hold much more personal info.

Its just a thing that holds money really, nothing more.

  • It all starts with reasonable methods.

So what will you do when they eliminate cash as a payment method for people who don't have cards?

What will you do when they eliminate cash as a payment in Grocery stores?

A recent Ninemsn story was about how we will all have a chip embedded in us with personal information and perhaps as a credit card...I'm serious look it up. If not message me and I'll give you the url

  • I wont do anything if they eliminate cash as an option....In fact i'd be happy because you wouldn't have those people who get on the bus, but don't seem to grasp the idea of having payment ready, hence you have to wait for them to muck arounddigging money out of their purse or wallet.

Somehow I don't think a chip embedded in your skin would take off with consumers though.

  • And what if embedded chips become the new peer-pressured product?

What if your required to to continue working in your job and paid via the chip? I'm not screwing around here...they'll use the chip as a payment device making you reliant on your employer therefore the chip manufacturing; Verichip most likely.

So if or when this happens what will you do when they turn your chip off...where's the money to pay for food gonna come? Just a thought. You might wanna start caring if it comes in.

  • Slippery slope logical fallacy my friend.

This thing can be completely anon, and can be topped off with cash. Once it starts being that we require them and then require that we register them then it becomes more serious.

Then it's still a long way to embedding them in us. The slope is no where near as slippery as you assert. Unregistered ones are just like 10 trip savers.

  • @Gazza2

it was witty! christ this isnt new technology.. i still carry my singapore go card (called ezlink over there). It's just a fare card!!! Anna is not going to take over the universe

  • Absolutely right wearechangebrisbane. Microchipping id is not for our protection. It is for greater control. Only people who do not understand the larger system of society buy this line. Probably u Vicki. Both sad & funny that that is so.

  • And have it know where, when and how frequent you travel. The road to hell is paved with good intentions...and I'm not even religious.

  • I work in a newsagency that sells the go card and people can choose to either;

a)Register their go card which would keep a record of where you travel and the frequency or

b)Not register their go card and remain completely anonymous.

When someone purchases the card they are given information to this effect.

  • Fair enough.

But a top up would be via Credit Card or Direct Debit < <(It may seem paranoid) but I'll also add it's a phasing out of cash.

  • can you leave it in the wallet and will it still work?

  • Generally yes.

However you are better off if you open your wallet, while still leaving the card in its spot in your wallet and then scan the part of your wallet where the GoCard is located.
