"Alabama's cornerbacks don't impress me one bit. They're overrated. Real men don't play zone defense and we'll show them a thing or two come January 1."
I wonder if I can combine this with a series of videos, which can explain better how the Hurricane offense (bowl-game excluded) blew these games, and that the defense (with Rohan Marley, Ray Lewis, and Dwayne Johnson) was nevertheless of legendary proportion and destined for all-time greatness.
Nice to see how many of ya'll still hate the "U." I guess 5 national championships since 1983 -- when the closest other team during the time is the Gators who have 3 --- will make you do that to us!
This game was a watershed moment for the state of Alabama. From 1920 to 1993... the nation snickered at the poor, inferior, state of Alabama. Then 1993 opened with this stunning victory over a respected Miami, followed by Mercedes' announcement of construction of a major automotive plant in the state... that same year. Since '93, Alabama gets no more ribbing than any other state.
This game was tough to watch. This was the first time we really got our asses whooped in a title game. At least 86, 88, and 03 were down to the wire (of course the "fumble" in 88 and the "pass interference" in 03 were two of the worst calls in college football history). Either way here's to another awesome year of college football.
"Alabama's cornerbacks don't impress me one bit. They're overrated. Real men don't play zone defense and we'll show them a thing or two come January 1st." -- Miami Receiver Lamar Thomas before the '93 Sugar Bowl. Thomas was involved in the Play of the Century.
Had Teague not made that play though..it would have been Miami's ball at tthe 10 plus the roughing the passer penalty. So like 1st and goal at the 5? Instead it would just return to the spot plus the penalty. So 1st and 10 at Miami's 20? One of the greatest plays I have ever seen, and I'm not a fan of either team.
In your FACE Lamar (Big Mouth) Thomas... Why didn't they show that on ESPN's '30 for 30: The U'. How about U turn. I love how they still had Lamar on that special runnin his mouth even after Teague owed him. Where was the mention of that? Or maybe they could have talked about how a reserved, classy Alabama team came in and took a thug U team to the woodshed. Nevermind, I guess that would be too classy for Alabama. Good thing they ended it right before they could cover who made the U their daddy.
@wyker003 I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Of course it was just a just a documentary about Miami success in the 80s to the 90s, but they did cover Miami's decline in the mid-90s. I wonder why they didn't cover the game that marked the beginning of the decline and that showed Miami they weren't all that. Oh well, I guess it's just the Bama fan in me that wants everything about my team to be covered.
what this video doesnt show that actually didnt count it got called back for roughing the passer....still bad ass though and roll mother fucking tide.
Marcel Darius' interception return will probably be this generations 'Strip'. Or maybe Anders causing the fumble with three minutes to go. What a great game.
@angrykoolaidman we had a defensive lineman do that in the florida game in 2005... which was way better than Dareus's just Dareus's was on a bigger stage!
Canes fan here ,but got to give it to George. His play made me remember him the rest of my life.Lamar was our deep threat and fastest but George made him look like he was standing still, ran him down like he owed him money.respect for Mr. Teague. Should be in college hall of fame,if he isn't already,on this play alone.
This is in my opinion the best play of all time. I'm trying not to sound biased but the speed to run down the receiver and the presence of mind to strip the ball. Hopefully we will see something like this come January 7
That Alabama team had one of the best defenses in College Football history, and they stuck it to that overrated Miami team. People said that the Canes were talented, but they really didn't have as many great players as people think. Gino Torretta? Lamar Thomas? Kevin Williams? Horace Copeland? Who was their RB? I forget. Those aren't exactly NFL stars. Faulk should have won the 92 Heisman, not Toretta. The Canes wouldn't have won in 91 if it wasn't for Wide Right, or if they played Washington.
Yes that Miami team was talented, but yeah they were really overrated. They had a lot of close games in 1992 (Arizona, Florida State and Syracuse). In regards to 1991, Washington was the better team ( I was lucky to see that team play in person 3 times ) . What would be awesome if Alabama of 92 got to play Washington of 91. That would be amazing.
@SFFOOL76: I know. That would have been a good game.
Actually, though, Miami should have won the title in 90, not 89 and 91. In 89, if FSU doesn't drop their first game to So. Miss, they may have won the title. They beat Miami that year. And, you know what I think about 1991.
Almost supernatural, that play!! Good luck to anyone who thinks they'll see this happen again ... from behind!! Just put on his 'afterburners', and simply snatched it away....from behind....This clip reminds me of how fast George was....CLASSIC
I was at that game and me and my brother led a mob after corso for picking miami and he promised to never pick against alabama again well that didnt work so im going to again this year

i was 6 when this was played and i remember that to the tee, i also remember gino spendin most of the game on his back, yea this one and the prothro catch were 2 of the best in my opinion
i remember watching this game and can say throughout the past 15 years, no other player has even come close to the sheer athleticism needed to match this gem.
i think when people say a team from like 10 years ago is better than todays is the dumbest argument ever...we live in an age where kids are scouted as young a sixth grade...every player is a physical freak, and we have better knowledge on training players...you can never deny a great team..but the idea that this team would beat teams now days is a little out there. Iv always wished you could do that...and no..video game matches against "legend teams" to find out doesnt count.
What people don't seem to understand is that while this play was taken back because of an offsides penalty, if Teague hadn't made this play, it would have indeed been a touchdown for Miami. It irritates me when people act like this play meant nothing because of the penalty.
I met teauge in a hooters in grapevine tx back in 2002. He thought I was a cowboys fan and was brushing me off until i told him i was a bama fan from montgomery al. His eyes got wide and he gave me an autograph.
Easily one of the best defensive college plays ever, along with Woodsons one hand int vs. MSU in '97, and OU's superman leap in '01.
The win marked not only Bama's return to prominence but also the sec's as well. Not long after, Florida and Tennessee joined the title ranks later, with Auburn putting an undefeated season together in 93, but under severe NCAA suspension. Was so happy to see Stallings get his title after coaching stops at Dallas, A&M and St Louis.
One of the greatest plays ever in college football. No one talks about it other than Bama fans ESPN should have this when they show classic college football highlights.
It's definitely my favorite play of all time. I always reminisce with my Miami friends about it, and they all remember it well too. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving player than Lamar Thomas. He was the most arrogant sht talker on that Miami squad, and Teague made him look like a fool.
Its funny because 10 years later in 2002 the U was in the same position. Defending nataional champions going against a team they were heavily favored against and lost.
Remember the stat thats important. both teams are 1 and 1 liftime in national championship games. Miami beat the tide handedly in the 1990 championship game to become 89 champs. Randle Hill, Russell Maryland, and Craig Erickson> Remember those guys on the other side of the ball.
This was a very young team that didn't start to gel until the game after the Ole Miss loss. Anyway, your beloved '92 Bama boys with their defunct offense wouldn't have stood a chance against this kind of speed in this offense. Sorry. You're lucky Spurrier didn't have his '95 and '96 levels of talent that year, or you would have gotten the ass whoopin' you got used to when he was at Florida.
Everything we're saying is pure speculation. '92 Bama and '08 Florida were great teams. Spurrier was a great coach as well as Stallings. Don't forget that Bama upset Spurrier a time or two. What team in what year was better is again just a guess. What can't argued is numbers. 12 rings makes Alabama the very best football program in history BUT if you really want to argue I'd put Bryant's '64, '78 or '79 team up against anything you got
True, this is all speculation. However, how many of those national titles did Bryant win cleanly? He isn't exactly known for having always followed proper rules or ethics.
Bear Bryant was a class act. You never hear anything bad about him from players he coached or others on staff. He was well loved and respected by EVERYONE who had the honor to play or work for him. He knew how to win and brought out the best in his players. I don't know what rules or ethics problems you are referring to but i guarantee you he had more sportsmanship and was a bigger class act than that of temper tantrum Spurrier (GREAT coach- grade A sore loser/hot head) Conversation over man.
Yeah, 3 yards and a cloud of dust, right? lmao Keep dreaming. Florida changed the way football was played in the SEC. Spurrier put some whoopins on your dreary, unimaginative offenses.
what do you talk about in Miami? Football? Cubans? Where you're going to buy your drugs? Whether or not its safe to go to practice or not? Should we carry weapons when we play?
Are we not all americans living in the same country, just in different states. I hate hearing comments that breed intolerance, racism and the like. Don't turn sports in venue for racist comments. Remember your 92 alabama team had african americans on its team.
Hey dude I got some video's I done, some are funny and some are serious. If your true to your name, and you like Bama Football then you will like my video's
george teague made two of my favorite plays against the biggest scum in football... stripping of the ball from "THE U" and takin out T.O. for posing on the star!!!
Lamar Thomas could flat fly and nobody caught him from behind but Teague would not be denied.

Remember the stat thats important. both teams are 1 and 1 liftime in national championship games. Miami beat the tide handedly in the 1990 championship game to become 89 champs. Randle Hill, Russell Maryland, and Craig Erickson> Remember those guys on the other side of the ball.
umdynasty 3 years ago
lol w/e i know we have a shit ton more championships than u have...and this next one is looking to come in this year!
CptWhit3y 3 years ago
Those Miami and Alabama teams were nothing compared to this year's Florida team. Bama will soon understand the meaning of the word pain.
Zeldovich 3 years ago
Bullshit. '92 Bama defense possibly best is NCAA history. This Bama team would have schooled any team this year or past 3 years.
DevieBoy66 3 years ago
Uh huh. Talk to da rings, bitch.
Zeldovich 3 years ago
Which ones? The 12 National Championships that Alabama has won? You must be have forgotten that Florida did lose this year unlike the '92 Bama team.
DevieBoy66 3 years ago
This was a very young team that didn't start to gel until the game after the Ole Miss loss. Anyway, your beloved '92 Bama boys with their defunct offense wouldn't have stood a chance against this kind of speed in this offense. Sorry. You're lucky Spurrier didn't have his '95 and '96 levels of talent that year, or you would have gotten the ass whoopin' you got used to when he was at Florida.
Zeldovich 3 years ago
Everything we're saying is pure speculation. '92 Bama and '08 Florida were great teams. Spurrier was a great coach as well as Stallings. Don't forget that Bama upset Spurrier a time or two. What team in what year was better is again just a guess. What can't argued is numbers. 12 rings makes Alabama the very best football program in history BUT if you really want to argue I'd put Bryant's '64, '78 or '79 team up against anything you got
DevieBoy66 3 years ago
True, this is all speculation. However, how many of those national titles did Bryant win cleanly? He isn't exactly known for having always followed proper rules or ethics.
Zeldovich 3 years ago
Bear Bryant was a class act. You never hear anything bad about him from players he coached or others on staff. He was well loved and respected by EVERYONE who had the honor to play or work for him. He knew how to win and brought out the best in his players. I don't know what rules or ethics problems you are referring to but i guarantee you he had more sportsmanship and was a bigger class act than that of temper tantrum Spurrier (GREAT coach- grade A sore loser/hot head) Conversation over man.
DevieBoy66 3 years ago
actually bama's 1961 college football team is probably the best in college football history even up to today!
bamafanforyou 3 years ago
Sorry Florida, but if you can't beat Ole Miss then you don't deserve mentioning in the same breath with 92 Bama
maomatt 2 years ago
Yeah, 3 yards and a cloud of dust, right? lmao Keep dreaming. Florida changed the way football was played in the SEC. Spurrier put some whoopins on your dreary, unimaginative offenses.
Zeldovich 2 years ago
dat my coach dat jus da ball strip 4rom him...coach trippin
hustlingthug 3 years ago
I remember watching that game. Maybe the most unbelievable play ever, not just for the strip, but for how he runs Lamar Thomas down. Incredible.
MikeHeather72000 3 years ago
Excuse me does your team have so many National Chmapionships that they dont even have enough fingers to put the rings on? I dont think so....

Plays happen. That part of the game. Every major program have embarrassing plays in it's history.

Are we not all americans living in the same country, just in different states. I hate hearing comments that breed intolerance, racism and the like. Don't turn sports in venue for racist comments. Remember your 92 alabama team had african americans on its team.
umdynasty 3 years ago
The greatest individual effort on a single play in the history of college football.
hightider87 4 years ago
It is no doubt a great effort, but did you watch Vince Young play against USC in the 2005 National Championship? That has to be up there too...
George Teague is awesome though.
franz237 4 years ago
I think vine young takes it...
rogercito2007 4 years ago
I said best effort on a SINGLE PLAY, not the best game by a single player.
