When any of them gets too aggressive, he mimics reprimanding them. He also rubs his head against theirs like they do to each other to show acceptance & contentment. I very highly doubt that any of his "pride" will attack him. They look at him as the alpha male.

They have the same range of emotions that a human does as well as the ability to think and process information then draw conclusions in different situations... People just don't think out animals actions they just slap a "instint" label on them all and dismiss the case without giving it any thought.
