@tushardesai It's Sant Kanhopatra (1931) .. but I also remember this song is included in one of the films in which P. L. Deshpande has sung this song if I am not wrong movies' name itself is Johar Maibaap' .. I will have to dig in it a bit !
@aniruddhacdeshmukh Lalji desai is an old and honored singer and tabla player. Although he was never in limelight he was famous in certain circles. He has worked as singer in AIR shows and also played tabla in plays of P. L. Deshpande !
@aniruddhacdeshmukh Lalji Desai was one of the very best classical singers (gooni) of his time. He used to play tabla as well. But he never was in limelight for his singing. But he got famous the day he started working in P L. Deshpande plays !
@rhtbapat: Perhaps though I think Lalji Desai was an earlier generation to Nana. By the way, the song itself is a treat for percussionists. Do see the ending of this one - it is incomplete but the dholak is wonderful.
Apparently I am not allowed to post links in this box. There is another rendering by Manjusha Patil - it runs 3 minutes and 13 seconds. There is a heavy looking dholak player who absolutely freaks out at the end...Totally class act. Borkar Ji is playing the organ. I am giving so many details because there could be others by this singer which may not have that percussionist.
I could listen to this for ever, without understanding a word - feels immortal... Can you provide some background about this? Are there other renditions? I have heard Smt. Manjusha Patil and want to hear more...
@sangeetabhimanee Actually the song is from marathi movie Johar mai baap (1950). Song is sung by few artists as well. Most famous version is sung by Asha Khadilkar. Lalji Desai a renounced singer of his time and good friend of P L Deshpande sung it in his movie I mentioned.
@rhtbapat Thanks for the info. Searched youtube, esnips etc, for Asha tai's rendition of Johar Mai baap :( If you have access to it, would it be too much trouble to post it?
@rhtbapat Perhaps I wasn't clear... By access, I meant I don't have the song, but may be you do. If I find the song, I will surely send it to you for posting:) Thank again.
When you listen to this bhajan you can imagine that you are in Pundurpur. I got the filling today and i was in tears with the emotions.Great song, great meaning and great voice. Ashadi Ekadashi chi surwat sunder zali.
