i like how people thought indy wouldnt do a good job hosting the super bowl, when they were getting 300,000+ back then for the race alone. when the speedway was open the entire month to the public. indy was the first new host city to do it right the first time
the super bowl gets half attendance that for the entire week and only 80,000 tops for the game
The one Indy 500 that I was actually at! Of course, I don't remember it...my mother was still only 4mos preggo w/me at the time. Really neat to see this video though! :)
Oh, and going forward, I prefer for you to call me by my first name, Randy. That's what all my close friends call me here on YT, and that's what I want you to call me by for now on, OK? Thank you. :-)
Thanx, my parents actually attended this race, they sat right above the pits near Turn 1 and Mom, a native Hoosier along with me, now in SoCal, has said ever since, if you attend any sporting event son, go to the Indy 500 at least once for its all around spectacle, still have yet to go! 8-)
Sam Posey had a great "500" run just a couple years before when he finished 5th and then it was off to the broadcast booth before his driving career was even over. Then you have David Hobbs and Uncle Bobby in the field. All made their mark in the booth. And Wally Dallenbach, the future Race Steward who did such a great job in that post. What a cast of characters in the '74 "500".
Actually, the only reason Sam Posey was in the booth for this race was that Jackie Stewart was in Monaco for the Grand Prix, even though he was no longer driving, a fact mentioned in the broadcast. Posey was also in the booth with McKay for the 1976 Indianapolis 500. Actually, Bobby Allison was going to be in the race, but after the terrible 1973 race, Judy Allison wanted no part of Indy in '74, so Roger Penske tore up the contract. Ironically, Allison would be back in '75.
LMCMInterloper, I now have the 1973 Indianapolis 500 uploaded through the Swede Savage crash, though I've had to do it in segments due to YouTube's 15-minute time limit. I hope to get the rest of that race uploaded by Monday night, November 14.
LMCMInterloper, do you have the 1973 Indianapolis 500 broadcast, which aired on August 12, 2011? I do on DVD, but have no way of uploading it since I can't rip DVDs to the hard drive. If I could, the 1973 Indy race would include the qualifying coverage from the Speedway's official film, which aired as part of SPEED's "Indy 500: The Classics" 1973 race coverage, the pre-race, and three events that took place during the race that didn't make the ABC telecast, as well as the host segments.
By the way, those race events that didn't make the ABC telecast were Peter Revson's crash in turn four on the fourth lap, Mario Andretti's dropping out of the races at almost the exact same time, as well as Joe Leonard's spin around lap 45-50.

LMCMInterloper, this was the 58th running of the Indianapolis, not the 56th as you put in the info box.

Haha a 20 second pit stop is an incredibly fast pit stop

This was the only time between 1973 and 1976 that the "500" ran the full distance.

I am seeing the changing of the guard at Indy:
* Jim Caviezel (Person of Interest) is the new Kent McCord
* Mitch Daniels is the new Dan Quayle
* Dave Calabro is the new Tom Carnegie
I wish that WISH-TV Channel 8 in Indianapolis fires Derek Daly! I am sick of this jerk! Replace him with someone like Sarah Fisher.

@pacmanindy Daniels and Quayle, now that's funny.......and true.
