They do have these in English subtitles. I watch NHK World and I saw an infomersial sell this DVD in a box set for I think about $300. There are 3-5 minute samples of a lot of old anime, and the second and third samples from this video were featured.
(Not trying to change the subject, but is it just me or does the last clip from this video look like a family of obese Mickey Mouses? e.e)
Does anyone know, when anime goes into the direction we know today. In 1920-1940 it looked just like the american cartoons, which were made at this time.
the current style of anime originated in gekiga (realistic manga) that originated in around the 70s and kamishibai (japanese traditional paper drama) that originated in the 12th (?) century.
@BrainTetsujin17 It may have started the artistic idea but the idea of the stroylines and character development started with Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) This is not stating manga but anime an a form of televised media other than a published work such as a manga.
Anime is ONLY JAPANESE CARTOONS U FOOLS, im sick of people getting it wrong, AMERICAN CARTOONS ARE JUST cartoons, or forms of animation,, THEY WIL NEVER BE ANIME, because Anime/Manga is a specific drawing style, far more sophisticated, just compare the anime" bleach" to spongebob, i think u will all see how different and better anime is, JAPAN MADE ANIME, the U.S. never made an anime
@naruanimefan3 Anime is just short for animation. Therefore anime can refer to any animation no matter where it is made (basically what Terangeree said). Also anime is not just one drawing style. You say "compare Bleach to SpongeBob," but can you really say something like K-On has the same art style as something like Dragon Ball Z or Death Note, or something like SpongeBob has the same style as Watership Down (though it is British, hehe)?
so who was first anime ? japan or US ??? well, i like anime from japan how they are now and film like Tonari no totoro wa sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi :)
This is a nice clip. Thanks for posting it. These old clips remind me of old Fleisher animation. Although some would call this Anime I prefer the term 'Japanimation' for animation produced in Japan before 1945.
Do they have a collection of all these old animes on a single DVD? I would pay a full weeks salary just to get my hands on that! anyone can help me out?
can someone please help? when i was in japan in a film museum, i saw a film about an origami fox and mole singing their way to a house. it was in colour. does anyone know this cartoon?
you people are idiots. this isn't anime. this is so much better. these animations are in classic 20's style, and each character is well thought out and original.
Its called anime because its Japanese and for whatever reason America adopted that term as an alternitive Japanimation, in a more proper sense its short for animation but for some reason many think that it just refers to Japanese "animation" and it dosen't help that buisnesses in the US embrace the term.
They have some still shots on their website and a bit of informaiton about each of the films. Still, no video except for the same 1 min shot. Seems like the product will be out at the end of April. Not sure where they will be selling it -- only in Japan or in the States too.
Some of these look like early Disney works. Some look very Japanese and some very Western. Anybody know when these were made? Can't wait to see them with the English subtitles.
How about let's just watch it!

@Grasanta I'd say the change started in manga around about when Tezuka came about.
omnipossum92 1 year ago
@Grasanta Anime was originized in around the 20's but the current style we see today was not introduced until
(Tetswuan Atomu) in the 1960's which helped start modern anime.

Animation started out as a American phenomena, so you are right in a way :) They very often share much of the same style.

You *do* know that "anime" is merely an abbreviation of the word "animation", don't you?

@Terangeree
Though its really iconic and is now a common distinction that separates Western and Japanese animation.
