will be playing this for my husband tomorrow at his funeral. Loves Simply Red, had sad life but music got him through ... thank you Simply red for the joy you gave him as he was a sick man RIP John Hamer aged 52 from heather and children xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I didn't know there were a couple of versions. Somehow, this on reminds me of my younger days, so it may be a first or original. I didn't even notice the changes in another version I've been listening to 'til now. I love this man's voice and spirit. Simply beautiful, I agree!
i love this song. i can definitely relate. the meaning i get from this song is that even though his relationship is at a stalemate and has been for years, there is something there that he is still holding on to and refuses to let go.even though his heart is telling him something different. when the tears run dry and the grip finally loosens, revelation will set in. powerful i love it.
LOL, I've read the lyrics and I still dont understand this song. Is he talking about a lost love, or a lost relative??? What is he trying to say in this song ? Anyone??
@mannymmv Abandoned by mother (Latin - mater) at age 3. Raised, possibly abused by father (Latin - pater). Personal development stunted by fear/self-doubt. Holding back the years, in my opinion is a little more tricky. My interpretation is that time is passing but he's not moving with it. And finally I'll keep holding on, suggests to me that he isn't letting go of his past.
@Drydoc2 That's pretty much the message of the entire song. Mick definitely went through with it with BOTH his parents from the biography I read of his! He wrote this song at 17 I believe.
Yeah. This gives me the memories from the eighties, my childhood. I remember watching the music video at my grandma's place when I was about 12 years old, in 1988 or something. Good times.
when i hear the "i'll keep holding on" bit, i close my eyes and think of 4 girls that i care about the most in my life and one of them i hope will love me in the future
