  • I learned about her in my P.D lesson earlier today; i'm inspired. :)

  • love!

  • Have you noticed Evelyn expression at the end of musical interpretation? is the same as when he finished his speech madein the program Sesame Street ... is the expression of joviality (still does) and the joy of having produced music. How fortunate that a woman so we continue to give music even when you have finished touch. Her face is her tool to communicate .. have noticed it too?

  • I remember when I was about 10, receiving an award from her for violin... I'll never forget that. What an amazing musician :)

  • Scott Joplin would be proud.

  • Wonderful.

She's been profoundly deaf since early teens, and feels the vibrations, often plays in bare feet.

  • who could possibly dislike this

  • @NVThockey89 the only thing to dislike here is the hairstyle. but that's a legacy of the 80's we shall just have to endure! Her musical ability and talent is wonderous!

  • my love platonic !!

  • Totally amazing performance. I just wish i could play this four times slower.

  • She looks beautiful.

  • i need the marimba score for this..!!! anyone help me!!! @0@ <3 <3 <3 <3

  • if she isn't profoundly deaf she is a liar, but I would prefer to think she is telling the truth rather than have my mind changed by a vulgar stranger. Why should I believe you?

  • Does anybody else find this hot?

  • wowww!! I love this!! Percussion is a worl!

  • This is still my favourite version of this piece. So good...

  • Oh my oh my that is impossible for deaf using music things, I think she a fake

  • Be tha it may, fact of he matter is she IS profoundly deaf-end of story. Watch the documentary-listen to her TED talk. She "hears with her whole body, especially her feet.

  • She is not profoundly deaf but she is hard of hearing which could hear some of music

  • @thegapshow She actually is profoundly deaf. I got that from a documentary, so it's got to be right!

  • @pepsico8 Ever heard of Beethoven? There are actually plenty of deaf musicians. Not all of them are profoundly deaf. Deaf people can talk. Deaf people can make music. I don't know about phone usage.

Also, there must be a reason why your profile doesn't exist anymore. Looks like you're the fraud here!

  • Comment removed

  • @pepsico8 Look at you. A pathetic human being. You can't even speak without screaming and saying "fuck". You know, even if you're right, nobody will ever listen to you because of that. Even if you are right it won't matter, because everyone will think you're an asshole. And I can't really say that those people would be wrong to think that.

  • @pepsico8 Trololol.

  • @pepsico8 It's funny how you can't even talk about the subject at hand. I keep talking about Evelyn and deaf people, and you just keep on trying to insult me. What exactly are you trying to prove?

  • Comment removed

  • @pepsico8 I'm sorry, but you're just not delivering any valuable proof. You can just say anything, and judging from your language it's very hard to take you seriously. And see? See, you're telling me to shut up. There is obviously something wrong with you, be it on a social level. You just can't seem to communicate. Now please stop spreading the hate. Even if you're right, you're doing it wrong. Now for Pete's sake just enjoy the fuckin' music.

  • Comment removed

  • @pepsico8 I'm not jealous at all. I just think you're trying to prove yourself way too much. Believe what you will, but I think you lost all credibility when you started attacking and all. There was absolutely no need for any profanity.

Also, little bit of trivia: Maple Leaf Rag, one of Scott Joplin's many famous compositions, is a piece that falls into the ragtime catagory, which contributed a lot to the development of jazz and like jazz is built upon lots of syncopations.

  • @Demoras tut tut temper temper I agree with pepsico, Evelyn Glennie is not deaf I'm sure of that

  • @cutemaniac1 Haha, I think you responded to the wrong person. I'm not the one with a temper. It looks like pepsico8 is freaking out though. I'm as calm as I can be. Well, believe what you want, I guess *shrugs*

  • @Demoras You say to Evelyn Glennie: "I'd really like to get into your pants."

Evelyn Glennie say: "No thanks. There's already one asshole in there."

  • @goodtube77 Could you at least have tried making a mature joke? Let alone a funny one. Jeez, thanks for letting us all know what age catagories we're dealing with here!

  • @Demoras Have you see many other complaints that Evelyn is not deaf

  • @Demoras yes, yes, yes. We can ALWAYS tell the age of the people making comments, cant we???

  • @robinleigh131 Most of the time you can make an approximation, yes.

  • @Demoras Hahaha, I love how that pepsico idiot deleted all of his/her/it's comments :-D Obviously pepsico is just jealous that he will never be able to play anywhere NEAR as well as Evelyn =)

  • @Demoras mmmm!! I don't think Evelyn actually deaf but my daughter who is deaf I've tried to play piano with her but she get furious because she cannot hear or feel vibrate and couldn't follow rythm, It is so hard for her to use any music instrumentals I've tried provide her but how can Evelyn do it, Well she isn't deaf.

  • @cutemaniac1 Who knows, maybe she isn't deaf, but in several interviews it is said that she is profoundly deaf because of damage to her nerves. Just because your deaf daughter can't do it (yet!) doesn't mean that Evelyn isn't deaf. And just because Evenlyn can make music doesn't mean she's not deaf. Saying so is simply too easy.

If you think about it for a minute and take into consideration basic anatomy, neurology and physics, Evelyn's story is not unlikely.

  • @Demoras Nope you're wrong it is impossible for deaf people to use music instrumentals because they cannot hear, I think you are so stupid for believing what Evelyn say, She is very clever actress pretending that she is deaf

  • @cutemaniac1 Have you ever heard of Beethoven?

  • @Demoras Of course but how do you know that beethoven is deaf but it just a rumour

  • @cutemaniac1 It is a fact, not a rumour. It is written in his testament and it has been documented. Historians are all about facts, you know? There is plenty of proof, and there would've been no point for Beethoven to pretend he was deaf. His popularity wouldn't rise, for there wasn't any (international) media to impress.

  • @Demoras No she never is Deaf

  • @thegapshow I can promise she is. My dad went to the same school as her - Ellon Academy - and he also is a musician and is 2 years older. He got to know her through music and said she went through a hard time because so many people slagged her off for being deaf but look at where she is at now. It is people like you who do not want to believe she is deaf because of the unbelievable skill she has.

  • @mrmusicfan11 She was in aberdeen deaf school for the deaf her head teacher booted her out because she is not deaf, You're just a mug believing her huh!?

  • @thegapshow Where do you get your sources from??

  • @Demoras she was with me same school, She don't know how to use sign language because she is not deaf that why her head teacher send her to hearing school

  • Amazing! xD

  • I've listened to this performance at least 30 times now. Its so fun! :P Gotta love yah Evelyn.

  • i loved how she was bouncing to the music and how delighted she looked throuout the whole performance :D

  • If you are interested in her feelings on the topic of deafness, read her essay about it on her website. Or google "Evelyn Glennie deafness essay." She is profoundly deaf. It's alright. I like her because she does what she wants to do, joyously and beautifully.

  • she keeps playing on the nodes

  • Only 1 word, WOW!

  • oh une folle ...

  • Her Facial Expression Is Just Priceless At The End. :')

  • @janssenlee trollface!!!

  • I loved her hair back at this time~

Her smile is unchanged; always a beautiful comfort!

  • Thank You for allowing us to see this wonderful playing Guru

    A fantastic piece of music

  • Brilliant!

  • Perhaps she's an extraordinary musician because she's not genre bias and media induced.

  • JAPAN

  • does anyone know if that is an arrangement she put together herself, if she just read off a piano score, or if it's an arrangement comercially available by someone else...b/c I would love to perform this. Evelyn is quite the percussionist. Can someone please message me if they know...

  • It's not strange that she is that good! She has music when she learns a piece and knows what written note corresponds to what bar on the xylophone itself and can learn what bars to hit without needing to hear them.

  • @Mewsan2007 actually, she CAN hear them. she hears the music by feeling it with her extremely heightened sense of touch, and she has limited ability to hear sound.

  • great performance and what beautiful girl!

  • It's a good feeling to go to the same school that she went to, I think it's amazing that she is deaf as well and is still able to do what she does perfectly.

  • Comment removed

  • @sag8t She's essentially deaf.

  • its hard to believe that shes deaf

  • Wow, she's cute!! Brilliant playing too!!

  • Jeez, way to give her a round of applause... that audience must be deaf haha.

  • its anazing to find someone who actually enjoys their job

  • woooooohooooooo!!! never seen/heard something like this!!! she's totally amazing! :)))))

  • the new Lionel Hampton!

  • SUPER!

i like this Video, its great.

Evelyn, i am your fan :-)

  • I tiink se amzng

  • Sounded like Muppet Show music in the1st opening 1st 22 seconds.

  • AMAZING.

  • reely entertaining :-]

  • Thanks for posting this video. Great to see.

Love her hair by the way. :-)

  • After reading a ton of comments on this video I just wanna say does it even matter if she is deaf or not? She's a fab player; if she's profoundly deaf then that's pretty cool that she can play but it doesn't make a huge difference. Sound is vibrations interpreted by the brain, not some random "la" going in one ear and immediately recognised. Higher vibrations are just harder to keep track of.

Excellent performance by the way. 5/5

  • Which explains why in her original marimba music she seems to gravitate towards the lower register.

  • @19Ladybird92 well it does matter a lot.... can u play music? of course, anybody can... can u play it well? maybe... now can u kno wat ur playing and if its rite and all these different things all by the vibrations with no sounds? i think not.. that takes years my friend.

  • @19Ladybird92 deamn right!

  • @19Ladybird92 it matters because shes making more money and fame than i will ever see and its mostly because she is deaf. What if it just were a sales pitch? She doesnt talk like a deaf person. Im not saying she is lying, but i do encourage people to question things that need to be questioned.

  • love this song and her variation.

i think it stinks tho that 1/2 the video is looking at her face instead of her playing, which i wish i could see :( oh well, fantastic anyway.

  • She is a great talent. Saw her at the University of Maine years ago and she was fantastic.

    Keep up the great work.

  • uhmmmm no she was deaf from the time she was twelve actually.

  • amazing woman - deaf - yet she can play that thru the vibrations in her wrists... simply fab!

  • ur retarted

  • no joke she looks like edward scissor hands lol

  • omg we watched this today in music ma music teacher went to school with her

  • This piece makes me smile :)

  • Fancy in every way!

  • even that hair! ;D

  • its quite entertaining to see her not reading music while the others are. she so awesome in every way.

  • Yeah because I bet she tours everywhere with that Japanese band. Man, these guys are on the gig -- they're not always playing with just her, and so her repertoire isn't something they might know offhand.

  • podum77 yeah, i'm sure she's using her deafness for publicity.

stop being a knobhead and just listen to her music.

between you and her, i think you're the one who's deaf.

  • i dont see the point of arguing if she is really deaf or not. i appreciate her interpretation of this piece of music, and the way she inspires people on how to listen. doesnt matter if she is deaf or not, even if she isnt, the enlightenment she gives is equally profound.

  • You claim that you went to school with her, and that you have some inside, in a sense, information. Could you elaborate that.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, the music was pretty good, too? Come on guys.

  • She is so beautiful and so talented!

  • Comment removed

  • =favorite:)

  • oh so beautiful ...*****

  • Apart from medical tests, there's a very simple test to see if someone - who claims to read lips - is faking: Say something without actually speaking out loud. If they can read lips, they'll know what you said. If not, alarm bells - they just might be faking.

  • Curly38 nah your comment are rubbish why are you complaining that she is deaf she is hard of hearing not deaf

  • Holy jumpin' Jesus Christ!

WTF is the matter with you? You're like these guys from the Flat Earth Society who claim the Earth is flat and sits on top of a giant turtle. Why do they say this? Because someone told them so.

If I'm wrong, fine, I'll admit I'm wrong. But first you got to prove it - show me something that I can independently verify. I don't want to hear about uncle's girlfriend's cousin's neighbor who knows a kid who heard it in a dream.

Show me proof that she's faking.

  • you're a disgrace to deaf and you think you are god like evelyn glennie yes of course you are bloody wrong you haven't met her and she usually with me at school okay so F.O. ok

  • Goodtube, you seem an angry person. You need to chill out; take things in stride. You're not being persecuted. You're not a victim.

You and Glennie may have attended the same school but she's 44 and you (according to your channel) are 31. You two didn't hang out and go drinking together.

If Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles can play piano while blind, why can't Glennie learn percussion while deaf?

Why hate on her? She's done incredible things.

  • you're wrong again I'm not angry I am fine no problem and 31 is not my actually age my age nearly evelyn age, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles is not deaf and I don't hate her. what make you think that

  • I'm actually shocked to find that Evelyn Glennie actually not deaf there no need telling lies

  • Evelyn Glennie actually not deaf

  • she's clinically deaf. She has extremely little hearing... no, she's not completely deaf, but close to it. Either way, she has overcome a lot of adversity and is amazing at what she does, deaf or not.

  • well she is hard of hearing not actually deaf cos she can hear some

  • look up the definition of deaf. She classifies as deaf. Deaf does not mean living in total silence. It is a classification for those that are have a significant loss of hearing. If you're going to argue, look up the facts.

  • from dictionary. com: deaf- adjective 1. partially or wholly lacking or deprived of the sense of hearing; unable to hear.

notice the first word? partially? and if this isn't good enough for you, I'll pull out the OED definition... though you probably don't know what that is.

If you're going to call someone stupid, don't sound like an idiot yourself. the last part of your post doesn't even make sense!

And if you want more proof, go to Glennie's website. There are essays on it.

  • Lets say you are right podum. Why on earth would she pretend to be deaf? What drives a person to do that?

  • 0% of hearing up to 25% or so is considered deaf... And of all the deaf people in the world, only a small percentage have NO hearing whatsoever.

  • Yes you're absolutely right but surely Evelyn more than that cos she can hear music

  • if you have 25% of your hearing you can hear some music!!! Not all of it because you cannot pick up all tones and intonations.

Why would she have more than 25%? What's your point podum77?

0 to 25% is considered legally deaf!! End of story.

  • Evelyn Glennie 99% hearing that I know of.....end of

  • yeah i heard about that too; we learnt about her today in assembly at school lol but yeah i heard she was near enough totaly deaf and that she knows when to play because of the fact she takes her shoes off when she plays so that she can feel the sound vibrations and play at the right time

  • evelyn glennie is not deaf

  • "evelyn glennie is not deaf"

    Prove it.

My understanding is that she was not born deaf but lost her hearing - somehow - when she was still a kid of 11 or so. She had already learned piano so she understood music.

    Don't forget, Beethoven was deaf.

Anyway, you say she's a fraud - prove it: Offer some evidence that can be independently verified - no personal opinions / observations. Your opinion doesn't mean shit.

  • you're wasting your time believing her, Ok go ahead believe her please yourself

  • Is this what you call proof?

She's been featured on 60 Minutes. There's nothing they would like better than to "catch" her in a lie.

Dude, she's been around for a couple decades now. If she were putting us on, it would have been uncovered by someone other than you.

    Quite bullshitting. Where's your proof?

  • Proof ha ha what a laugh easy Evelyn Glennie attend Aberdeen Deaf School scotland same as me our head teacher notice her and found she is not deaf so they send her to hearing school, I'm I bullshit eh!!!! how that I'm saying to you I'm not joking you're wasting yourself time, Her mum force her stay deaf she so cruel to her when she was small

  • So you're deaf too, huh? What is it with you and Glennie - did you make a pass at her and she told you to fuck off? Are you jealous of her success / talent?

What you wrote here is not proof. It's hearsay.

Did the head teacher at the Aberdeen Deaf School ever come forward to denounce Glennie as a fraud? They should, because if Glennie is, indeed, not deaf, then she should be exposed. There would be publicity. Where is it?

Just because you're deaf doesn't give you licence to be a prick.

  • Curly38 - huh jealous what do you mean 'jealous' what a laugh I don't have problem with Evelyn Glennie it just because she is not deaf she may be hard of hearing that mean can hear some, deaf mean can't hear and impossible to do with music instrumentals things I am not shit ok

  • wtf are you nuts can you see or hear e. glennie talk and playing her music without mistake

  • Yeah, it's called talent + lots of practice. Some people have it and some don't (I can only assume that you are one of those that don't).

She does speak flawlessly. But, as was mentioned earlier, she didn't lose her hearing until she was 12 or so. So she had a chance to get her diction and pronunciation right.

If you're like goodtube and think she's a fraud, fine - prove it. She would be insulting deaf people everywhere if this was just a show.

But no one could put on a show this long.

  • that nonsense I don't understand you & you always believe her & you are a thicko

  • your comment bullshit

  • Beautiful arrangement, good performance. Bravi.

  • Evelyn Glennie is an eye and sense opening to all. Everybody should here about her story. She is an incredible Lady and im very inspired by her. I am not deaf, but I completly understand her mind and her work. I just admire her and wish her a great succes in life. Evelyn, if you are reading this, your simply my Diva.

I talk about her and her story to other's just to help open minds around.

From a fan of you, Michelle (Gatineau-Quebec)

  • this is awesome!

  • Does anybody know that Evelyn Glennie was BORN deaf (and has never had her hearing restored)? Amazing.

  • Actually she lost her hearing at age 12.

  • I like it!

  • ali wells enjoys mild fromping. and likes children.

    haha
