Capybaras are not giant rats. They are a large species of rodent. All that means is that their front teeth grow continuously and they gnaw to keep their teeth short. Capybaras are more closely related to guinea pigs than rats. They are sweet and docile creatures. Caplin is a very well cared for and loved creature. He gives love in return. I think they are wonderful animals!

I am a Vegetarian and if pple knew the health and environmental benefits of not eating meat they would be a lot healthier. But this is how I look at this is also a not a regular livestock animal and HC is a jerk like Bush. The poor capybaras have enough to worry about with all the wild animals down their why should pple add to their endangerment when they can eat the pork/cow/chickens. Yes capybaras are endangered so pple should not eat them.

@kannon9 partly true - we eat too much meat/fish and should augment our daily quantities of fruit and vegetables, but:

- if everyone were vegetarian, the planet could not support us either, since you need a lot more vegetables than meat to nourish your body

- we would eat away the food source of herbivores and they would die out

- if herbivores slowly die out, carnivores will have less food available, making them possibly aggressive towards humans...

- WE ARE OMNIVOROUS and should behave as such

caplincapybara isn't exactly right about the venezuela thing. In venezuela they're only allowed to be hunted for part of the year, around lent, as the catholics consider them fish rather than "meat." For most of the year it is illegal to hunt them.

CAPIVARA is a name that comes from the Brazillian Tupi Guarani tribe and it means "comedor de capim" or "grass eater"... I'm brazillian. And the CAPIVARAS here are protected by law. If you have one in captivity outside Brazil or other South American countries its ilegal.. sorry if I bothered you. ^^

That's interesting but not true. Capybaras are not protected everywhere in their range. In Venezuela, for example, they are both hunted and ranched for food and leather products. In ny case, Caplin is fourth generation captive bred so he would be grandfathered in.

You can look at the CaplinCapybara channel for information on where we got him. Why did we get him? We saw them in the wild in Venezuela and fell in love with capybaras. We live in the country and so have the room to keep him. And we heard they made good pets.

Capybaras (note spelling) thrive in captivity. If you can keep a guinea pig, a hamster, a gerbil, etc as a pet, then you can keep one of these guys.
