  • Sounds sweet!

  • Greatly satisfying sound.

  • 1966 SR1 3.5kw plant here. Thanks for posting, thats a honey of an engine.

  • Great vid- I've just been given one identical to yours except mine's seized (rainwater).Did they vary the power rating on these by changing the speed, as mine's 2.1 bhp @ 1000 rpm ?

  • Sorry,... Should have said the raised-hand starter like Lister puts on their small MARINE diesels.

  • Nice vid of a great little engine. I've just purchased a marine version to install in my little Cape Cod Catboat. It has the "raised hand starter" that Lister put on all their small diesels. Mine was in a lifeboat from a ship. I was really lucky and picked it up for $100.00, almost running condition. Thanks for posting. Kevin in Nova Scotia.

  • @catmantoo53 Thanks for the comments. Be sure to post some videos of your boat when you get her running - I know a lot of guys who will be interested in your Lister installation.

  • I love diesel engines! ;-)

  • Nice little diesel this.

I hope to get one eventually -- just have to wait for one to show up within my range. Like my Petter A1. AKA: Rumble. hehe

    What's the approximate weight?

  • Thanks! According to my handbook, the basic LR1 weighs 101kg - so not significantly more than a Petter A1 which I would guess must be about 90kg.

  • I got 1 of the ld1 running a compressor in my yard always starts in the coldest of weathers and gets very little attention except a check of the oil when i remember..mine starts exactly the same.

  • Lovely sound! I'd love one of these! Nice bit of smoke on startup too.

  • Lovely runner, I'd like a Lister diesel to go with my early Petter PAZ1 - unless I get a compact PAZ1.

  • These aircooled diesels are great, I don't understand why anyone would do this, but my club proposed banning aircooled engines at shows as they can "upset" other exibiters. I think they were reffering more to small engines like villiers thrashing away at 4000rpm, personaly, I don't mind!

I think these engines are great as they can be bought so cheap, one in SE mag for £60 in A1 condition!

If I had room (and money) I would have bought it!

  • I'm afraid there is a terrible underlying snobbery within the UK SE movement at the moment. I can't tell you what someone on a well known SE forum called this particular engine, but it began with sh and ended in ite! The LD/LR engines were a direct replacement for the D type so surely deserve preservation?

  • I'm sory to hear that, Yes they deffinitly do need preservation (your doing a grand job!) I think these engines are real beuties. They should by right be preserved, mabe in a few years people will fall in favour of these? We can live in hope! If I ever have more storage space the first thing it will be filled with would be one of these!

  • I own a 1959 LD1 and personally i would much rather hear one of these beaut's pounding away than a lawnmower engine (which we all hear in the street in the summer at wekends!) I also love the smell of diesel....proper raw! ;-)

  • Yes, they are fantastic and have a loveley beat!

My favourite noise is the crisp sound of my wolseley WD, the sound of these wonderdfull diesels isn't far behind!

  • @enpeemac. people like to see different engines at shows. anyone who po pooes an engine like this is not worthy of our time.

  • villiers are great they are one of the only long lasting air cooled engine that were made in britan, my villiers will last as long as ur lister d but has 3 times the power is smaller lighter more economical and can still run as slow as a lister but i still love lister im sorry i justget angry when people nock of good air cooled engines, my villiers is governed down to 1000 rpm and will ru all day on 1 tank love ur vids, rant over

  • This is exactly why I ignore all the cynics who slate the later aircooled diesels - one day we'll wonder where they all went and why no-one saved them!

  • I know. I had the same dicusion with a friend who has a cut away of one of these Lister LT1s. He also has a Petter PAZ1 that he started when I was at his lock up today. He has done a Lister D cut away aswell.

  • How hevey is it compared to a Lister D?

  • According to the literature that I have, a 1.5hp hopper cooled D type weighs in at 135kg whereas the LR1 is just 101kg - so conciderably lighter!

  • I wondered because yours is on plywood and they look bigger to me!!

  • There was one of these up the local beach used for winching boats but it had been removed and left to one side with the tank removed. I bet it went to the SCRAP MAN!!

  • very nice engine. whats the difference between LR-LS-LT?? and is this the most compact lister diesel?

  • Hi and thanks for the comment. As far as I know (and I'm no expert), the LT(1) is the smallest in the diesel range (apart from the Lister/Petter AA1/AC1/AD1 models), weighing just 50kg. The LR1 was a later version of the LD1, which was effectively the diesel replacement for the Lister D type. In fact the LD1/LR1 shared the same footprint and output shaft size/location as the old petrol D. The SL & SR range were bigger still, offering much higher outputs + full flow filtration etc. HTH

  • Hi enpeemac,

You seem to know a lot about those old listers. I've one but I'm unable to identify it. What would the difference between the LD/LR/SL/SR type engines. Besides more output? Is there any way to tell them appart?

  • Hi, you should be able to find the full engine number stamped onto the flywheel crown (the surface that many people like to polish). Mine is stamped just before TDC.

    HTH

  • Not bad sounding for an air-cooled diesel.

  • the year of my lister lr1 is 1964.

    thanks for the comment!!

  • Oh now that is badass. Can't imagine all the time/money I would save having a lister generator compared to my new gas piece of crap. Got TONS of used oil and I know that thing has to go a lot longer on a gallon than anything else, have to look at prices now..

  • The first starting sequence description I have seen thats great. I had to figure out how to start my engine.

  • sweet
