I think this possible Star Trek spin-off is a lot like the Star Trek Phase II what if? scenario! it's very likely that Assignment Earth could be made into a TV series in the future there have been some Star Trek novels based on the Assignment Earth premise!
One of my favorite episodes. I read in Nimoy's book "I am Spock" that Shatner had a clause in his contract back then that stated no one could have more speaking lines than he in any given episode of Star Trek. ASSIGNMENT EARTH was written by Gene Roddenberry, and must have been intended as a possible pilot episode for a spinoff. Robert Lansing (Gary Seven) definitely had majority of speaking parts in this one. Special arrangement between Shatner and Roddenberry?
I'm glad you got a kick out of it. There is really nothing to "get" though. I tried a number of different opens for "Assignment: Earth" and nothing worked. Then I remembered that The Great Bird of the Galaxy once said he envisioned AE as maybe a comedy/drama. I tried a few sitcom opens, and viola!
It had the potential to be a great series as did Robert Lansing have the makings of a superior action star.

Good job on editing this video, but the Friends theme just doesn't quite work for a scifi series.

Friends of the Earth reference? I see it now.
