  • cicada! *sigh*

  • If you're coming for the USA, you are allowed into Japan for 90 days without needing a visa.

  • when i get a chance im going for a working holiday visa for japan. ( but i need to afford to store my stuff here while im away -_- )

  • can a passport be a Visa

  • I really want to move to japan.... I guess going to UTI and graduating there then go to japan to study Japanese will be a better way to go good thing Im opening up bank acount 2nd one so far :)

  • Great advise, even 3 years later...

  • Typical double standards

Do Americans even know what Europe today is like? every country and I mean every country in this continent has had mass immigration and what has it does? created nothing but ghettos and divided people Some far right wing political group went to Japan recently to warn the Japanese not to make the same mistake as Europeans.

  • I really wish there wasn't music accompanying the video.

Also, the cricket and insect noises overwhelm this video, too.

  • yeh im planing on finishing university before i go to tokyo

its gonna take some time but like u said life is long ^^

  • FUCK!!! I gotta shave.

fucking testosterone that made all this annoying hair grow.

  • Thanks for the visa information. Im wondering about the Universities in japan, Do they accept just any student? does that student have to have been a student at a University in US, or is it possible that person can come from a community college and get into that university in japan?

  • @Draidic need to be from an actual university

  • that is ,, according to jpns laws foreigners who lived in japan for 5 consecutive year can apply to become japanese nationals EVEN before they become a permanent resident,,meanin its easier to become citizen than permanent resident, AND one more thing is not known by most foreginers and that is you dont even need to wait 5 years if u been married to a japanese national for 3 years you can apply to be a japanese citizen without being a permanent resident,

  • @pornpan96 well, you lose your other citizenship, but if you can endure japanese life for life, well im proud of you bro.....

  • as far as permanent resideny no you dont need to be in japan for 10 years unless ur visa was issued other than spouse visa, if others it may take more years like 20 years to be citizen, if u got spouse visa most people thinks u must have 5 years visa in order to be a permanent resident , NO, once u pass 3 years on the 4 th year u can apply to be permanent resident and it takes few months to get granted or denied ..also most people dont know something which is important,,,,, that is ,,,,

  • so basically japanese visas are tricky cuz if u leave the country without gettin a re-entry visa and even if ur a permanent resident you cant come back ,and ur current status is automatically revoked, so u must do all over again,, if u do something illegal or get arrested they can revoke ur rights too, its very complicated, i ve seen many permanent residents got deported due the family problems fights and arrests ,so its better ot be a good person and keep it low profile,

  • cuz even if u get permanent residency ur not safe, cuz its deportable, both tejusah or ejusha are deportable, they cant deport u if u become japanese national..but even if ur eiju permanent resident they want you to have 3 years re-entry visa right and u cant stay more than a year outside of japan , so it means u think ur permanent resident but u only have 3 years re entry and every 3 years u gotta get a new one,,

  • japanese visas means shit, i dont think ur know it well.,yes they treat the person according to his/her nationality, but regardless of any reason the easy one is spouse visa and when u have it for they ll give u 1 year then 1 more year which is tejusha, and if u paid taxes and u get 3 years visa . when u get 3 years visa u can apply for permanent resident ,they call it eijisha, but its all bullshit, why,,, cuz,,,

  • i love your tie in this video

thanks for your hard work. :)

  • Some people have dual nationality. I think recent year,Japan has changed the law.

  • The Plane...The Plane LoL

  • The best way to come to Japan for the first time is via the Working Holiday Visa. The tourist visa prohibits employment, the work visa requires a commitment to stay with a single employer/sponsor full time and the student visa requires you to enrol at a Japanese university which are notoriously expensive to foreigners. You do not need to worry about tense interviews or long waiting lists, you dont even need a degree! What are you waiting for?

  • Hey TokyoCooney. Thank you for the video. It has helped!!

  • Just carry you Gaijin Card.....no exceptions!!! Rules are rules. Hey they should adapt this in the States, Canada, Britain, Australia, etc. Any objections??

  • Hey another point to my flawless way to get a visa. Japanese will not call the Mainland to talk with previous bosses, college administration staff and so forth so don't worry about that. But if you do sign up for a job and the boss is say a Brit or an American they could bust your balls. NOTE- matrix printer is used to make your transcripts. Get letter head from college of your choice. I called Rutgers University and told them I am a 11 year old boy collecting envelopes and letter heads from

  • different colleges. Was easy. After I made the transripts at a Kinkos in Tokyo I mailed them back to my friend in New York who promptly mailed them to the job that was interested in me. My first job was teaching English...did I mention I only had a GED at the time and dropped at of high school. LOL...i do have my Bachelors in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle now.

  • Do you have your AS degree from ERAU for real, or was that fake too? Was wondering because my brother graduated there, he might know you.

  • Naaaaa , can't fake ERAU !!!!! Can you imagine making that degree up and sitting in front of those 6 people on your airline interview. Now that takes balls.

  • Hmm.. temporary resident you say? So my question is, can you buy a house in Japan as your own property if you are not a citizen?

  • Ok question.

i live in UK but im polish and do i need to have british passport to apply for vista in UK etc?i mean do i need to be resident of uk?

  • dos it have 2 be a 4 year degree i only have a 2 year

  • Here is how you do it. Go there, find a job you like, make the 4 year college transcripts of your choice then have you friends back in your home country mail them out to the job you are applying to. Japanese will see the envelope stamped from the area and will not check. If you think they will check, put a cell phone number on the transcripts and have your friend man the phone. I did it and it worked flawlessly not to mention 20 of my friends too. Back then I just my GED degree. LOL

  • Do you still live there now? What type of job did you end up with?

  • "life is long"

    Very true my friend.

  • ignorance much?

  • i dont normally swear but your an *sshole

  • Now that's a real intelligent comeback. Profanity is a sign of a lack of intelligence.

  • cooney, u rock dude!! seriously.very clear and informative..what nursing jobs..i'm a lvn..

  • Working for the US Goverment, the goverment, the Untied States handled all the Visa paper work for you. It is possible to get a job as a civilian working for the Miltiary too.

If I ever move to Japan that would be the way I'll take. Since I am going to work in that field. But that isn't for everyone, and most likely would not work for everyone. Also may not get a job in Japan.

Also funny bit about Naruto at the end. It is a good anime/manga (the manga is better), but is vastly overrated.

  • Suzuka is better. Also Japan is one of the hardest countries for acceptation for a Visa.

  • I had not really gotten a change to watch it. Saw bits of afew episodes on the Funimation Channel, but not really into track and field, so never made tired to really watch it.

Yeah, It probably not that easy. But getting a job with the US goverment in Japan, would mean they would do the Visa paper work for you. (although getting the job may be harder that getting the Visa, I don't think there are that may civilian job slots over there)

  • It shouldn't be hard I mean doesn't the U.S. have good relation with Japan. I mean if your from another country other than U.S. then it should be harder shouldn't?

  • not really is easier for northern europe and australia

  • ty for the info :)

  • Naruto n' Bleach...lol; anyway...Temple Japan Campus is like what...English classes? Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, French..or what? and for example, you got the high school in Spain, Portugal, France whatever, Would you then be able to enter @ TJCampus? thnks i'adnvc

  • i lol'd at the naruto part, that was pretty funny.

yea my plan's are to finish UNI, i'll probably be done at 22-23 ish and get a Celta certificate and apply for a job as a english teacher.

  • During most of the first part i was too distracted by the blond girl with the little black dress in the background.

Anyway other than that it sounds like im fucked and that il never be able to get there. T_T

  • I thank you for taking this time out, to give us all some serious info about visas. I found it personally very helpful.

  • now they are offering 300000 for the south america temporary workers(with japanese relatives) to live the country and renounce their actual visa!

  • haha a man looked to see what you where doing!!

  • I am planning on attending Temple Japan Campus next year. Hope I get accepted! Anyways, My mother is Japanese and I was born in Japan and have family there too. However my father is an american and I guess I have an american citizenship now that I am 22 and we live in the U.S as well. Would I get a student visa or a dependent greencard/visa? to go back to japan.

  • I lol'd at the part about the 15 y/o kid w/ the over obsession of naruto wanting to be a refugee.

  • Wow that blond girl @ 3.28 kawaaaaiiiiii w

  • hes gotta a prompter :)

  • Very helpful, thanks a lot - you're a lot more interesting and easy to follow than boring sites. >.>

Though I didn't like the jibe about Naruto. xD

  • once your are considered a permanent resident, can you leave and live back in the US with out need visas for US and then go back to japan without visas, also to become a permanent resident, do you have to live there for ten years straight or can you leave for a year or so? thanks for the videos dude

  • thanks for the vid dude it answered my questions on visa's especialy the marital once i heard about so much, and lol to the whole naruto part at the end.

  • Oh okay so you can renew the visa? Thanks for mentioning it. This was very helpful.

  • I know someonw whose parents are not Japanese but he was born and raised in Japan until a grown-up. However, most of his friends do not regcognised him as a Japanese dispite his nationality in Japanese. Isn't that weird?

  • his nationality is Japanese. He has Japanese passport

  • not really dude, your friend is simply considered a gaijin or alien simply because he's not japanese when it comes to genetics. theyre not racists in japan they just like to stick to their kind.

  • So by educational background, you mean the classes that the person takes, or the grades that the person got in school and in college?

  • Are they're black Japanese people? Because there are blacks, who live there.

  • Nice writing! What do you call it?

  • i'de say get your 4 year degree, then get a job in Japan; it's the freakin easiest way.

I wouldn't recommend marrying some girljust to live in the country. tsk tsk

  • LOL 4:10 Butt scratching!

  • whats F.Y.I?

  • For Your Information = F.Y.I.

  • Shame, years after I split with a Japanese ex do I realize I want to try living in Japan for a few years.

Oh well, renewing visa's for me. :o

  • oh so you're only gonna use her for that reason @_@

  • In all fairness I was just a trophy gaijin. :S

    :P

  • don't be so arrogant.w XD

  • does marriage allow me to work legally

  • So if I marry a japanese citizen does that allow me to work for any company in japan legally. Does a student visa really allow 20-28 hours ?

  • Thank you Cooney!

That helped me a whole lot!!

  • Sponsorship is useful if you work for a company in your home country which also has branches in Japan, and wants to send you over.

  • Dude, you are really nice fellow gaijin! Your FYI helped! I was deported last March. Overstaying. Ministry of Justice penalized me for 5 yrs, not able to go back again in Japan:(

  • There needs to be a "Hunter Visa" so I can go to Japan and hunt those 15 year old Narutards who did by some amazing feat, manage to get a Refugee Visa.

But thank you for the video. FYI, I have already read the vast majority of the Google threads on this topic. They are.. BORING, But worth it. I prefer this GREATLY.

PS: I would totally denounce US citizenship for Japanese, no contest XD.

    ありがと

  • very informative

  • If you get a permanent residence visa, is it forever, and if u leave the country does it go away, basically im asking, CAN YOU LOSE IT :'(

  • I'm so glad Abercromie & Fitch is gonna give me a working visa.

  • thanks Cooney, you're a man of entertainment and wisdom :P I'm planning on getting my Bachelors Degree in Business first, then I'll move there as an English Teacher and eventually get into a Business job, like Managing or Accounting even

  • student visa allows you to work 20-28 hours

  • can forieners get high paying jobs in japan?I wanna know what they are if there is any

  • Im planning on studying in Japan to get a bachelors in Film and then continue to live there to work for probably the rest of my life. After getting a student visa do I apply for residence? what do I do?

  • just wondering if possible can obtain a working visas in IT/technology department, because i don't think ill be going in the teaching English area lol

  • did you see the girl behind him in black wow wat an ass... =)

  • you're so right about that :)

  • @miqojoe hahahahah!!! I tought I was the only one that saw that!!! hahaha I couldn't understand what the fuck this guy was talking about, when that cute ass appeared!! haha

  • @miqojoe hahahahah!!! I tought I was the only one that saw that!!! hahaha I couldn't understand what the fuck this guy was talking about, when that cute ass appeared!! haha

  • hey I got my visa a few days ago do I still have to apply for landing permission?

  • ok scratch that. I got my CoE and all that lol. I just read it. It's basically a stamp. Ok so it's no different from when I visited Germany, and Turkey.

  • I have been trying to talk to people on the matter of obtaining a Japanese passport. I used to have both Japanese and American passports. My parents are Japanese and I was born in the USA so I am an American citizen. The Japanese passport is expired since I had it when I was younger. Do you know if I'm able to get another now that I'm in the mid 20s? Any info would be appreciated.

  • Not too sure, but what I can say is that I think it's easier to get a visa if your parents are Japanese.

  • Hey Tokyo Cooney! I've been watching your videos with interest and I have to say you're very talented!

Just a small point - I hold dual nationality. I have both a Japanese and a UK passport. Go figure I guess?

Thanks for all your entertaining/informative videos!

  • good video - i also heard that japans population is aging and there are not enough young people to fill the jobs they are leaving behind. as you mentioned the japanese are somewhat racist when it comes to citizenship - but they need peopel to fill those jobs or else their economy will probably take a turn for the worst

to say the least, don't be surprised if it gets a little bit easier to get visas in the near future.

  • yea they're taking in a lot of economist, accoutants, and engineers. Because their secondary education system isn't exactly the best. Sooo if you're american like me. Hit up Japan, or hit up Singapore, or any EU country lol.

  • "everything you wanted to know but were too lazy to google." lol ^_^

  • i like your tie

  • Do I have to get a Visa if I just want to stay for a few weeks?

  • i dont think so as long u dont stand more than a month

  • i dont think so as long u dont stand more than a month

  • Yes, and u need an extra visa if you wake up past 9 a.m.

  • as of february 2008, japan has made a few exemptions. if you live in the US or Canada and are holding a valid passport, you can apply for landing permission for short-term stays for such purposes as sightseeing and business trips WITHOUT obtaining a visa.

if granted, you cannot stay more than 90 days.

  • hmmm.. so if I was there for more than 10 years does that mean I MUST become a citizen?

Also, that is so cool that I could be Japanese and not look japanese!:) I gotta tell my friend that. He loves Japan and wishes he was japanese!

  • thats the most fuckin hardcore tie in the world!!

  • your race

  • Is that a Happy Tree Friends tie?

  • Thanks so much for all these informal videos. For some bizarre reason I have always wanted to live in japan ever since I was a kid but I gave up on my dream when I thought it could never happen. Anyway, after wasting some time on pointless courses I am now striving to get my degree, finish learning Japanese and going out to live there (most likely teaching English). Your video's help me from becoming disheartened again whilst keeping me thinking realistically. Seriously, Thank you!

  • Say I wanna go to japan to learn japanese, what visa do I need?

  • What is a Visa? -I am 14 give me a break-

  • A visa is a piece of paper that says how long you get to stay in the country as well as what you are allowed to do. (for instance work or study) All country's have a visa system, (atleast all developed ones) and sometimes it might be quite hard to get to live and work in another country.

    Hope this helps.

  • Most of this info I've already sorted and found out... but hey, it's good to know from someone living in Japan that teachers arevery welcomed. I'm planning to finish my studies, get another degree as teacher, and possibly go there as a Spanish or English teacher. Thank you! :3

  • Nice video, I have a question. I have 2years of university, no degree, but will not go further into debt to continue my education here. I have 4-5 years of work experience in tech. and with specialized Japanese printing equipment (My Japanese is not good enough to let me fit into a JP language only job though). Do you think I'd be able to get a sponsored visa after my WH visa expires?

  • I have a question, (I apologize for the idiocy) for permanent residence status, is the 15 years only recognized under the working visa. For example if a person has a two year student visa and later get a working visa and stay in the country for 13 years will the two year under the student visa be acknowledge and combined with the working visa years lets? . I guess I could google this topic, but I thought I'd be a pain and just ask you:)

  • Wow! Great video! Thanks for all the info on Japanese immigration! I've been thinking for some time (well...practically all my life) to live in Japan as a resident. Since you only can become a legal resident after renouncing citizenship to your home country and the fact that your residency lies in your wife's hands, what would happen if you went that route and your Japanese wife decided to call for a divorce? Would you suddenly become a country-less citizen?

  • Hi i duno wether u can answer this question or not but i would be realy glad if u did.

well my status in my country is not exactly legal..yet but i am studying just like a person with a passport and everything , but i am in love with this girl (shes 100% japanese) and we are thinking about mariage alot.

so i was wondering if i would have to go back to my home country to apply for a visa to japan from there or i can just do it from here? thank you

  • Im afraid I cant really answer that one. I recommend getting the legalities sorted, and be careful how you do it, because a simple paper work mess up could have serious consequences as far as your future visa applications. good luck.

  • thx and im actualy thinking of a new plan, one that i get like a 1 year japanese language study in japan just to see how japan is and so on, and i dont know if im allowed to marry while im there with this student visa, but i will probably go back to my home country and get maried there, then i can go to japan with proper documents and stuff.

    again thx cooney

  • wow... you have issues.

  • Your video was quite informative on visa's just that i've been told before that it only takes 5 years of residency to get a permanent one but that might have changed since...

  • I'm currently doing a Diploma in IT and want to advance onto a games design Degree in university. Reading the info on the links that you provided it all looks very daunting for me lol i live in the UK so i dont really know anyone who has come from the UK lol

Anyways whilst i was reading the links information i didnt see any IT visa types :(

I know its japan and there really good with IT etc.. i was just wondering if you have any information on IT working type visa's

  • You look like Steve Buscemi.

  • I'm on full time college student visa in Japan. And to be exact, after you applied for working permit, it is allowed to work up to 28 hours a week. But over the summer and winter breaks we can work for unlimited hours.

  • What are the taxes in Japan like?

Did you, yourself, have to give up your American citizenhip in order to live in japan so long?

  • Taxes are not so high compared to Europe, but things are more expensive than in North America. Citizenship has nothing to do with the length of stay. As I explained in the video you can continue to get working visas indefintly as long as the paperwork and sponsorship is in order.

  • Ok, I am Really serious about moving to Japan, and living there. But Not giving my my American Citizenship. But I as wondering if it i possible, because it seems unknown to many I have asked. If it is Possible after going to collage and getting all of the degrees and such and learning the langurage, is it possible to have a job as a Manga Artist. Yes, I am ompletely serious..

  • I say follow your dream but please research the necessary paperwork, and qualifications needed and explained partially in this video. The immigration office does not issue a "following your dream visa" citizenship has nothing to do with it, you are trying to get a sponsored working visa. Google it.

  • Hai hai, I understand, I'll try as hard as I can! I shall do the research and fullfill my dreams! Though I mus to what you have stated and be realistic about it. Thank you Tokyocooney!!

  • Thanks for the info I've been wondering about this, I'd like to move to Japan and was wondering if I had to buy visas untill I gained citizenship, I'm still trying to figure out what line of work I could do, I was thinking I might be able to do construction work.

Also, quick question, do you think many japanese would like at me in a rude way if I were dating a japanese girl? I know they're supposed to be very .... purist like?

  • Ill answer the first question as its more related here, there is no reason to become a japanese citizen and it isnt likely to happen until about 15 years of continuous residence, possibly marriage included. I have no idea why Construction companies would give visas for laborers from abroad, but Im really not sure on this one. Generally visas (as in every country) are given to specialists.

  • A useful video, thank you master Gaijin.

  • i want to become a citizen of japan through music , can that happen?

  • Thats some thing you are really gonna have to research, as thats a pretty big question. First you have to ask yourself why you want to be a citizen of a foreign nationa nd have some really really good answers.

  • Do you know what story is on the

Entertaiment Visas? I don't know alot about it. I've just hear you can get one for being an Entertainer i.e. Singer, dancer, comedian, host/hostess. Thanks.

  • Yes an entertainer visa is possible, but it is more often than not a code word for "Hostess." Though I do have some friends sponsored by theater companies and such who have entertainer visas.

  • Cool, thanks alot I really appreciate your comment.

    Keep make'n awsome video.

  • another great vid.

few comments;have you been to korea(south obviously)?

citizenship does seem worth it if what u said is true;in addition to not being able to vote, permanent residents can be deported, which imo is major risk. didn't you say american citizenship can be regained?

    kiotskete

  • great vid

  • I was just curious how you would do on a lvl 1 or 2 JLPT, in your opinion, having lived in Japan for ~6 years. For a lvl 1 JLPT you have to know ~10000 words and ~2000 kanji. A lvl 2 is ~4000 words I think and ~1000 kanji. On that note, did you study Japanese at any time before you went to Japan? Thanks.

  • Id probably be around level 2. I took level three and 5 years ago and it wasnt too hard. I didnt study before I got here.

  • By the way how old were you when you started learning japanese because i've been learning for over a year now and even though i know quiet a bit of japanese i can't hold a conversation in japanese and i was wondering whether there may be an age limit before perfecting my japanese may become impossible

  • an age limit for learning japanese?? Come on man.

  • hey smart ass, its a well known fact that as you age your ability to adopt a new language becomes harder and possibly impossible to learn all the language's slang and grammatical functions, since i've currently got a (nintendo) Brain age of 28 im wondering whether i should quit now (and yes i am otaku)

  • Well, its your descion whether you want to beleive in this silly 'fact' or not. Try beleiving in yourself and not surrendering your potential to some "well known fact". Also, dont doubt your potential because of what a nintendo game tells you about your brain's 'age'. Have some determination and perserverance, you'll learn japanese just fine.

  • I'm a big fan of your videoes and would love to know a bit more about your love for japanese culture, have you thought about creating a wikipedia page on how you developed an interest on the culture and how you began to learn the language etc.

  • I love the Tie you're warring !!!! :)

  • Nice tie, btw---is it just me or are those yellow rabbits wearing sunglasses?

  • [really don't want to plow through 8 pages to see if it's been posted but...]

On the student visa you are allowed to work up to 4 hours a day.

  • That really SUX! okay so i have to either renounce my U.S. citizenship or Marry.....I guess i better start looking ;)

  • Canada has a Working-Holiday Visa. That's what I used when I went last summer.

  • some wise words there at the end.

  • One way I heard about getting around the visa thing is going to a cheap language school and then working lots. It's not really what they want you doing, but I don't think you could go for far as to say it's illegal. Some schools seem to exist for this very purpose and don't require you to attend much and don't check up on your work habits. If you teach Eng privately you can make enough to live on and it is all untaxed.

  • no, that is illegal

  • Great information! Even though I already have a sponser its nice to know other ways to go! Thanks!

  • beeing a permanent resident gives you the right to healt care? do you have health insurance and those kind of stuff?

  • Being just a resident gives you the right to enter the national health insurance system. So curently Im covered by the public health insurance system.

  • what if you want to get in to the private system?

can you get it or do you have to be a citizen for that?

  • No, the private companies will also sell insurance to residents. As I said in some other places, really the only benefit to being a citizen is voting rights and some more security as far as not being deported. Insurance really has nothing to do with it, as insurance companies are largely just selling a product.

  • I think you handled that question extemely diplomaticly considing the subject .. BTW what is google .. Only kidding

    Great Work Once Agian Cooney

  • What are the perks of being a citizen versus only being a permanent resident? Is it just for voting purposes?

Also, I worked on a student visa while I was in university in Japan. I could only start work on my 2nd semester there though, and I had to maintain a high GPA.

  • You get a japanese passport, you can vote and if there is a war with North Korea you might be expected to help out.

  • I'm an entertainer (see Profile for Clips) and I Would Really like to live in Japan. I'm curious as to how that WOuld Help me in the process.

  • It is also possible to enter the country as an entertainer, but to get a work visa, you'll likely need to be sponsored by a company like Disney or Uiversal Studios. However the majority of foregin hostesses enter the country on "entertainer" visas. So Im not sure how strict it is.

  • another great video, i finished university a few months ago with a bachelors degree in business and i was planning to move to japan to teach English this year but my graduation isn't until November, so i planning on getting a job until next year and then moving across. Keep posting these videos, they are awesome.

  • Wow, thanks you've covered all my questions, now all i need is a japanese bride...anyone interested in spending their life with me in japan??

  • If you find one, see if she has a sister.

  • um what is ith the overall hiss over the audio of the video was it wind or a water fountain i could only barely hear you speak
