Thank you for helping us, our pipes froze and we desperately needed someone to show us how to temporarily cap the .5" pipe. Why do these people criticise a YOU TUBE VIDEO?? If they really knew what they were doing they would have a job instead of wanking it on the internet all day. Fuqueers. Thanks man!
what i like to do when cleaning copper piping is if the pipe is small enough(3/4,1/2) i use a car battery terminal cleaner to clean the outside its faster than emory cloth( i think so) and can be used more
Thanks, I've just started sweat soldering and after watching this video I've been using WAYY too much solder. It looks like you need to use like 1/2" of solder at most off the spool. I was probably applying almost 2 inches, drenching it, but it still works. Just not as pro-like.
Thanks. Good clear video highlighting most of the important points.
One other point is dont move the joint while very hot as this may produce a dry joint.
Second point (on small bore pipe) is to take the flame away just before touching the solder to the joint. If it is at correct temp it will run and you will not get that unsightly drip on one side.
Thirdly, the solder should show as a continuous bevel ring between the end of fitting and the tube. Hope this helps.
Dosn't take long with a better torch head than what your using here mate. Turbo torch, brazing torch (Single gas) rothenberger ect ect ect. Pencil torch head is almost useless for anything larger than 1/2" A brazing torch head for 25 bucks will have that fitting smokin in 20 seconds water or vice or not. Yellow color about 200 deg C, meaning flux melts, shortly after, time to solder. Good video though, Cheers. IC Trade welder.
look i dont know about you guys but using lead base solder will kill you. its called heavy metal poisonning or lead poisonning from drinking it! if your going to solder copper tube on a potable water line use silver solder. yes it needs a little more heat than LPG can give but map gas would do the job. oh and dont use sand paper to clean the tube as the gum or glue of the paper leaves a residue when heated tarishes the tube and prevents good metal flow, so use steel wool (dry steel wool).
Had Plumber show me how to do this years ago. Haven't had much opportunity to put it into practice but have a bunch of galvanized pipe in my home that I am going to replace with copper. This was a great refresher, I especially like the fact that you took the connection apart to show how well the solder flows into the joint. Nicely done. Thank you
@Ditre when you receive a hot flux or red hot piece of molten solder in the eye I bet you gonna regret writing your comment . remember :" play safe wear goggles"
@adamson001 welding goggles are for welding, they are heavily tinted and since soldering doesn't blind you for not wearing tinted eye wear it only becomes a disadvantage. also, playing it safe would mean NOT standing under the part your swetting and wearing the RIGHT safety goggles
@adamson001 Welding goggles are for WELDING where your using a source of heat that gives off a light that is bright enough to damage your eyes (Oyx/Acetelne, Arc, MIG, TIG, etc, not soldering w/propane. Safety goggles simply protect your eyes from things getting into your eyes. This may be pointing out the obvious (it would be to most people) but you're using the wrong terms.
@Soulrider2012 i wrote my comment for someone who said that goggles are useless to solder copper pipes, i did not mean tinted ones , I always wear regular ones even when using a hammer
thank you for the tutorial - i found it very helpful. i especially liked how you drew the parts apart to show us how the solder was sucked in. again, thank you for the play by play :)
He did everything wrong. That is not how you check if the solder took. You have to cut it in half and tear the pieces off. This guy is a hack and needs some schooling.
He needs to go the hardware store and by the right material for the job. Like a 1/2 inch wire brush and sand cloth instead of the sand paper he has. Sand cloth is a finer mesh and cleans the fitting properly. Sand paper is for carpenters.

Good vid., only thing I would add is sometimes map gas, verses propane, will make a faster and better joint. It gets hotter faster and if you are pressed for time you can dip your joint in a bucket of water to speed cooling.
Yeah, MAPP is amazing compared to propane, but don't use it with your old nozzle made for propane, or else you wont see any difference. Buy one made for MAPP, there a little more expensive. II cut my sweating time in half with it.
do not read a girl heard crying from her closet in side her closet was a bloddy head if you dont post this to 1 other video you will hear crying in yourcloset and there will be a bloddy head
I'm 16, my Gramma has a hunting camp in North Western Pa. The Plumbing in there was all PVC, then my gramma wanted a shower and water heater installed. I watched this video, and others, then ran 40' of copper line and replaced all the existing plumbing. She called a plumber to check my work, he said that my sweating was almost perfect (some had a little to much solder) so, he offered me an Apprenticeship. Its pretty sweet Thanks for the video.
Also, dont listen to Terror Trooper.... You cannot use a damp rag, it must be dry to wipe the joint. a damp reg will only stick to the fitting as it cools it
I cant see why you just couldn't of said something positive. this guy is trying to help people. Why don't you make your own video or a response showing people exactly how you do it!
I was just making a comment, that on every video i go on, it just shows a bunch of negative comments, then you have professionals like your self come on and criticize people trying to help others. couldn't you of just came in and made a comment on how to do it right without having to be so negative. or posted a video response on how to do it right?
So, for the third time, sorry for not being PC but if you look back at my posts I never once said anything bad about the man himself, only the "really lousy display of soldering" in the video and that people chould be careful to teach people the proper way to do things that can have an effect on a persons health by way of their drinking water. This is something licensed plumbers take VERY seriously. What if it were a gas line???? Get my point? Liberals like Hatefuel cant understand this
I'm not a liberal you prick! If people want to cut corners and poison themselves that's fine with me! 2nd off if you are stupid enough to hold a blow torch to a gas line you deserve to die. This is called natural selection. This is exactly like saying: yep, I'm going to change a breaker box whilst being soaking wet, being wrapped in aluminum, without getting the electric company to turn the power off. "code" And lastly most people will research what they will do from various sources!
not just you tube. oh and the hate fuel thing, its fueled on on hate not, i hate burning fuel. Couldn't care less about the polar bears or a big carbon foot print!
Thats terriffic!.... My purpose of commenting was not to insult the man who posted the video but rather to add to his video by correctly stating that he was soldering incorrectly and not wiping his joints. Pretty much every other part of his video is right on the money and this guy should be commended for trying to help people save a buck!! However, in this day and age, the politically correct crowd is always insulted when you point out a mistake, they call it "mean spirited" if you do.
Also, it is necessary to then wipe the joint with a clean, dry rag to wipe away the excess flux. Failure to do this will cause the flux to turn green over a period of a few months and can lead to deterioration of the joint sorry to be overly critical but it annoys me when I see people that attempt to "teach" something that they cannot do correctly themselves
As a plumbing instructor I am amazed at the really lousy display of soldering by this guy. When you begin heating the pipe you never move the flame around both the fitting and pipe as he did. In order to cause the solder to be drawn into the fitting it is necessary to apply the heat to the shoulder of the fitting only,(Located at the back of the fitting where the pipe bottoms out into the fitting)
I liked this video because he did not use his fingers to apply the flux. Your body oils will contaminate the flux and pipe joint which will producing a faulty joint.
I was taught that when a drop of solder falls from the joint the soldering is complete.
Thank you- To the point - No - Bull-Sh- So many sites that make you jump through hoops- I took note of your sponsor and will consider based on your help
You shouldnt use sandpaper as it leaves grit that can cause a poor soldered joint.
And you should always wipe the joint with a damp cloth, as if your flux is an active (acidic) flux, it will cause pinholes a few years down the line as it remains active at room temperature.
Also, a lot of resentment here over plumbers prices, our accreditations (ie. gas.) cost a lot to maintain.
Theres a lot more to pluming than just joining bits of pipe.
I always thought the elbow at the bend was called the heal , not the top, and the inside was the throat! Hum, so much for a professional plumber! Dont forget to wipe the joint with a wet clothe! Makes for a nice clean job and gets rid of a over solder,
make sure to wipe away from you, If a little water in a repair joint stuff with some bread, See how easy that was, I am a real plumber, and no job it to hard, Take pride in your work,U only have one thing to sell!! It's your skill, Thank
Post a how to video then, This guy did a great job to show amateurs how to sweat pieces together. I am no plumber, but I think he did a good job explaining the main points.
Good Job. You have done a lot better than most how to videos using a lot of detail which helps those that are doing this for the first time. Can you do a video on sweating a brass ball valve to copper pipe? Thanks
If you want you can put some bread inside the pipe to stop the water drip, just long enough to get the pipe hot. The bread will then get soft and flow out when the wather supply is back on.... O .. Turn off the water 1st...
I can't believe I watched this one also. No more. Folks, use a flux brush, emery cloth, a correct size fitting brush, pencil reamer. Roll out solder about a foot, put a little curve on it. Heat and solder lower fittings first. If there is water in the line, try to get some of it out (I don't care what you use, straw, tube but get the water out and away from your solder connection (heat the water out don't work, u end up causing steam blowing out of the joint as your trying to solder))

But it's not. It's installing commercial boilers and Chillers, new sewer laterals, ect... But I will continue to report unlicensed homeowners doing plumbing work to the townships always!! And the guy that buys the house that one of you "idiot, D.I.Y., lowes, warriors, is messing up is the guy we are trying to protect. LIke I said CHA-CHING..

"toxic" stuff? What an idiot. If it were toxic why would you be using the flux on the inside of the pipe? As far as "four years of college to glue and solder" pipes? It takes longer than that to get a masters plumbing license. And I wish it was as easy as just going out and doing simple jobs like soldering and gluing pipes.
markv33 if the only way you can get work is to turn in DIYers you suck it doesnt take 4 years of college glue and solder pipes.CARMA will come back and bite you in the A##
No its not "rocket science""your not building a watch" lol I have 2 years untill im a Journyman. How is a Doctor and a plumber the same in there jobs? they both bury their mistakes.
"paranoid" I am just reporting to the township unlicensed plumbing work being done. If the homeowner doesn't like it. They can go to school and get thier own MASTERS plumbing license, and then they can do all the plumbing work they want. Would you want a D.I.Y person fixing your teeth, an unlicensed doctor working on you, an unlicensed mechanic working on your car brakes? No rayman1 you are the shithead pedophile motherfucker who is paranoid.
i fix my own car its doesnt stop at just replacing breaks, im an aprentice plumber, but i do my own work in my house, i use my brain and actually teach my self how to do things the right way, licences are in a way there to deter ppl grom fixing something, and there also there for those who get in a jam and rely on insurance to get them out of a problem (house repairs example) use common sence use your head
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I love "do it yourself people". Every time I see one working without a permit in my township, I call in and report them. Then the township inspects the report. And requires them to have a liscenced master plumber pull a permit to do the work. No plumbing work can be done without it. CHA-CHING.....
ok...use the solder to spread the flux..its easier and cleans the solder (and pipe) more, and it is sooo easy to do, put a lot of solder on to make sure its all gone in the pipe to save yourself doing it again..its a pain. i can do it and im 15...yay.
Yeah this is true on larger projects, but then it's not soldering, it's brazing and it takes way more heat and you run the risk of melting your copper pipe since you're having to heat the copper "solder". On simple small jobs, tin solder works just great.
I hope they use lead free solder, and, dont cram the flux all the way in, otherwise you'll turn your water on and have flux particles coming into your nice iced tea...
Yes...very useful, informative video. I work around a lot of industrial refridgeration and use the 'Pro Press' system on copper pipe and tubing. It uses special copper fittings with a rubber Oring which is crimped on using a cordless jaw type press. Good for up to one and a half inch pipe, real fast and leak free with no heat or solder.
Going to viewdo.com comes up with "Nothing to see here. " What gives?

You are right. Sandpaper is not the proper abrasive. He should use emery cloth. In addition, a deburring tool is much more effective than a file.

what does too much solder cause? why is it bad?
SucceedsAtWill 2 years ago
Good vid., only thing I would add is sometimes map gas, verses propane, will make a faster and better joint. It gets hotter faster and if you are pressed for time you can dip your joint in a bucket of water to speed cooling.
2ndamendment1st 2 years ago
Yeah, MAPP is amazing compared to propane, but don't use it with your old nozzle made for propane, or else you wont see any difference. Buy one made for MAPP, there a little more expensive. II cut my sweating time in half with it.

You cannot use a damp rag, it must be dry to wipe the joint. a damp reg will only stick to the fitting as it cools it
revmo37 2 years ago
I cant see why you just couldn't of said something positive. this guy is trying to help people. Why don't you make your own video or a response showing people exactly how you do it!
hatefuel66 2 years ago
You are absoloutly right.... You go ahead and do your soldering EXACTLY like he shows you..... After all it's your house Dipstick
revmo37 2 years ago
I was just making a comment, that on every video i go on, it just shows a bunch of negative comments, then you have professionals like your self come on and criticize people trying to help others. couldn't you of just came in and made a comment on how to do it right without having to be so negative. or posted a video response on how to do it right?
hatefuel66 2 years ago
piss off
revmo37 2 years ago
So, for the third time, sorry for not being PC but if you look back at my posts I never once said anything bad about the man himself, only the "really lousy display of soldering" in the video and that people chould be careful to teach people the proper way to do things that can have an effect on a persons health by way of their drinking water. This is something licensed plumbers take VERY seriously. What if it were a gas line???? Get my point? Liberals like Hatefuel cant understand this
revmo37 2 years ago
I'm not a liberal you prick! If people want to cut corners and poison themselves that's fine with me! 2nd off if you are stupid enough to hold a blow torch to a gas line you deserve to die. This is called natural selection. This is exactly like saying: yep, I'm going to change a breaker box whilst being soaking wet, being wrapped in aluminum, without getting the electric company to turn the power off. "code" And lastly most people will research what they will do from various sources!
hatefuel66 2 years ago
not just you tube. oh and the hate fuel thing, its fueled on on hate not, i hate burning fuel. Couldn't care less about the polar bears or a big carbon foot print!
hatefuel66 2 years ago
I followed his video and it seemed to work okay on my pipes. Beats calling in a plumber and paying 300 dollars to do something that cost me 12 bucks.
jms8888 2 years ago
Thats terriffic!.... My purpose of commenting was not to insult the man who posted the video but rather to add to his video by correctly stating that he was soldering incorrectly and not wiping his joints. Pretty much every other part of his video is right on the money and this guy should be commended for trying to help people save a buck!! However, in this day and age, the politically correct crowd is always insulted when you point out a mistake, they call it "mean spirited" if you do.
revmo37 2 years ago
Also, it is necessary to then wipe the joint with a clean, dry rag to wipe away the excess flux. Failure to do this will cause the flux to turn green over a period of a few months and can lead to deterioration of the joint sorry to be overly critical but it annoys me when I see people that attempt to "teach" something that they cannot do correctly themselves
revmo37 2 years ago
As a plumbing instructor I am amazed at the really lousy display of soldering by this guy. When you begin heating the pipe you never move the flame around both the fitting and pipe as he did. In order to cause the solder to be drawn into the fitting it is necessary to apply the heat to the shoulder of the fitting only,(Located at the back of the fitting where the pipe bottoms out into the fitting)
revmo37 2 years ago
I liked this video because he did not use his fingers to apply the flux. Your body oils will contaminate the flux and pipe joint which will producing a faulty joint.
I was taught that when a drop of solder falls from the joint the soldering is complete.
brokenarrow2222 2 years ago
Thank you- To the point - No - Bull-Sh- So many sites that make you jump through hoops- I took note of your sponsor and will consider based on your help
joncharles111 3 years ago
i have to say it.
But i agree with Freedom4u2talk.

"toxic" stuff? What an idiot. If it were toxic why would you be using the flux on the inside of the pipe? As far as "four years of college to glue and solder" pipes? It takes longer than that to get a masters plumbing license. And I wish it was as easy as just going out and doing simple jobs like soldering and gluing pipes.
markv33 4 years ago
markv33 if the only way you can get work is to turn in DIYers you suck it doesnt take 4 years of college glue and solder pipes.CARMA will come back and bite you in the A##

I love "do it yourself people". Every time I see one working without a permit in my township, I call in and report them. Then the township inspects the report. And requires them to have a liscenced master plumber pull a permit to do the work. No plumbing work can be done without it. CHA-CHING.....
markv33 4 years ago
That's pretty weak markv33. By the way, why don't you take a DIY course in how to spell simple words in English. . . like "license."

markv33 4 years ago
ok...use the solder to spread the flux..its easier and cleans the solder (and pipe) more, and it is sooo easy to do, put a lot of solder on to make sure its all gone in the pipe to save yourself doing it again..its a pain. i can do it and im 15...yay.

take a damp cloth and wipe the copper pipe after you solder it. It give it a nice clean looking finish.

Only an idiot would solder water piping with tin. Always solder copperpipes with copper to make solid and long lasting result.
qurqo 4 years ago
Yeah this is true on larger projects, but then it's not soldering, it's brazing and it takes way more heat and you run the risk of melting your copper pipe since you're having to heat the copper "solder". On simple small jobs, tin solder works just great.
