  • I get really inspired to learn and play it,when I hear the music of Joe Cooley.

maybe I should go after that cd..(I believe there is an album of recordings from this session)

His music is hard to find on the internet,a bit mysterious..

And Cooley´s Reel happens to be one of my favorites, and this one will become too!

  • This IS Irish music.

  • Great!

  • Amazing performance by Joe Cooley.

I wonder if this is the only recording of him..

He must have felt really sick during the period this was filmed, but the music is so powerfull!

The banjo suits well with Cooley´s accordeon...

  • Magnifique

    A great moment

    Thanks for these vidéos

    TeCARENTAN

  • music to lift the heart on a dark damp winter's evening.May you Rest in Peace Joe

  • I come to watch this vid at least every couple of months. It's a touchstone.

  • Still one of my alltime favourite vids... I could laugh or cry every time I see this one.

  • I heard Joe Cooley play in this pub on a night which was very close to this night; I don't remember any cameras the night I was there; the music was GREAT-what a memorable night

  • Very pleasant moment of great music. I am one of these (many) french who love irish music (and try to play it but... not so good). This video shows the pleasure and the joy of people looking even through the windows ! Thank you

  • ABSOLUTE CLASSIC!!!

  • This is my most treasured clip on YouTube.

The true heart and soul of Ireland !

  • I agree with cuchaia,s comments , great times ,great music , I just wonder where all those people are now in 2011........

  • I keep coming back to this one. It's just so full of life. The best of music. :-)

  • The Master Himself. Rest in Peace!!!

  • The Master Himself. Rest in Peace!!!

  • The Banjo player is Dessie Mulkere from Crusheen. We had the proud honour of him playing a tune at my late uncles funeral in shanaglish this week. A fitting tribute.

  • Who is playing the banjo...is it Seamus , Joe's brother, who was a wonderful fluteplayer?

  • Somewhere in the recording of this session Cooley says: "Irish music is the only music that brings people to their senses." Great tunes from a great man. Thanks for this clip!

  • My Grandfather Michael Breen from Churchtown, Cooraclare would listen to Joe Cooley's album for hours when he came to Boston for a visit. Thanks for the memory, I can see him smoking his pipe in the kitchen tapping his feet.

  • I don't know who you are clarebannerman but.... Ta me i ngra leat.

  • brilliant stuff great clip we should never forget our great heritage of irish music rest in peace joe

  • Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

  • Great video. Awesome.

  • Thanks for posting this. The tune is changing so fast it is good to come back to its roots and the rythm. I'm still trying to play this well though.

  • Music to bring a man to his senses

  • Hello Bannerman, Just an update on Brendan. Still living in NW-London -Harlesden to be precise & still teaching away. A class act.

  • Another class posting Bannerman. Dessie & i think Brendan lived around North West London (Kingsbury?) many years back. Dessie used to be in & out of my Uncle's house to teach my cousin the Banjo, the FOX family. Thank God for Tony MacMahon for getting this on tape for posterity. CD is avaialable from Gael Linn, Catalog nu: CEFCD044, called "COOLEY". Keep them coming.

  • Красавцы!!!

  • That was a wonderful video! Thank you!

  • I'm so happy I've found this video! My Grandad grew up in Peterswell & was friends with Joe before he moved to Manchester in the 1950s. Before my Grandad passed away, he asked me to find him some of Joe's music which was a very hard task, but eventually I did find a CD which includes many live tracks as far as I can tell.

Thanks so much for posting this, it is just a shame my Grandad never got to see this footage, he would have loved it! If there are anymore videos of Joe I'd love to see them.

  • lovely thanks a lot. loved it

  • Thanks for this: wonderful music - and a wonderful audience! And so much life and joy in this man: what a lesson to learn from one who knew he was terminally ill! He does not really look as if he were in the last month of his life, does he? Giving so much! More of this, if you have more: it´s so good! Thanks again!

  • this was after they cashed Neds lottery ticket?

  • And Des will be playing again tonight with Anders, plus Charlie Harris (both Joe Cooley-style on D/D# boxes), for the set dancers at the Pier Head in Kinvara. I expect they'll "lift the roof off" as usual!

  • Great to see this back on YouTube!

You might be interested to hear Dessie Mulkere is still playing strong, and telling his tall tales too. He's in Hennellys Bar, Gort (on the corner of the road to Peterswell & Loughrea) tomorrow (Thursday) night, with Anders Trabjerg on C#/D box. Should be a great night - I'll be there!

  • i know joe cooley had no kids of his own i was just wonderin has any of his relations carried on in his footsteps in the states

  • Hi jules171002, Joe would have been my great uncle (thought he passed before I was born). I don't know of anyone in the states who is that musical. Though I have been to Ireland and keep in touch with a lot of the family there and most just play for fun goofing around from what I had seen.

  • Oh yes, There are! Look up The Wicked Tinkers here on youtube. You will like them!

  • heard so much about him from his family this is nice to see

  • maks me think of my dad. God rest his soul, a waterford man. he loved joe.

  • Thanks for this. Just what the doctor ordered.

  • Great stuff!

  • Great music you can,t beat Cooley

  • Thanks Mike - nice one to have!

  • Great to see this video. Well done clarebannerman.

  • Thanks for posting - he was a relative of my mother's. Great to see him on here, he passed when I was just a baby.

  • Now...THAT"S how I'd like to play!

  • Thanks to babeokelly for sending me to this wonderful video. How lucky we are to be able to view this moment in time, with it's great music, as well as the the joy on the happy faces of all present. The ovious love of this music is so strong, that I doubt Mr Cooley would let a little thing like his passing stop him from playing, he rests in peace, but I suspect, not in silence..

  • tres touchant, Danke.

  • brilliant and the crowd really enjoying it especially the young lad near the end

  • forgot to rate

  • Best ever!!

  • merry christmas mike thank you for all the great tunes this year.look forward to your new ones next year.comhaltas1.

  • thanks Mike!

    Merry Christmas to you too!

  • Mesmerising, pure enjoyment on everyones faces, including mine, sat here in my front room, wishing I had been there amongst them!!!

  • Exceptional. There must be more of these around somewhere. The man was a master at emphasizing certain notes which gave him his excellent tempo. He played at a lively tempo, yet not so fast as to destroy the melody. Clarebannerman: Regarding preserving the music on my side of the pond, Atlantic Canada, the group Ryan's Fancy did a lot along these lines. Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem did a lot on an international level also.

  • Brilliant stuff, playing with such life when he must have been very sick at this stage. The audience shots are great too, I like the old fella with the wild hair near the end.

  • ahh...to share that moment must be priceless to all who were there that night...I wonder where the young lad is with his tie-pin. There's something about Irish music that goes straight to the bloodstream. Thanks Mike for another pure gem.

  • Perfect celebratory affirmation of LIFE! In this cold dark season such luminescence is essential, critical to sustaining and renewing the life awaiting the dawning of the new year. Love you Mike!

  • Brilliant! A joy to see & hear. Thanks for posting this Mike x

  • A rare treat.

  • What's most interesting to me about this video is the look on the faces of those in the audience, the pure enjoyment they are getting from the music and the performers. It's such a contrast to now. Thanks for posting this insight into a time, a people and their music

  • It's the music I was born into & love with all my heart & soul. When I was a kid traditional Irish Music was neither popular or profitable. It was considered a backward country orientated type of music. It's only in the last twenty five years thanks to Ciarán Mach Mathúna,the Chieftains etc, etc.

  • Yes, I understand. I was not brought up with traditional musis and didn't get into folk till I was about 18, starting with Johnny Moynihan, Sweeney's Men and the Neptune Rowing Club every Friday night. Later, after moving to Canada I took to learning tunes, mostly by way of sessions in homes in Vancouver. ( It looks like you're burning the candle )

  • I had the pleasure of spending Christmas 2008 in Peterswell, Co. Galway. I met Joe's nephew and spent some enjoyable times listening to traditional music. Joe had a vinyl LP, I think produced by RTE with music and interview type stuff. His nephew had a friend put it ontoa a CD for me. I let my button accodian enthusiast friends listen to it and they really enjoyed it.

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Joe's nephew in Peterswell over Christmas 2008. He put some of Joes music on a CD for me and it is absolutely incredible

  • Now THAT'S what I call music. *****

  • Lovely to see this exclusive on Youtube. Would you happen to have access to any more of the same evening?

  • thanks Mike!

    I love this!

  • The master at work indeed, too bad we don't have more, thanks for this.

  • Thanks for this - Joe Cooley- Great Musician,

And Composer ,, of Irish music ,, WOW,,

    jim,,,,

  • great to see a master at work. great video. love the old stuff, but it makes me old. thanks for posting.

  • Getting to see the man in action really adds a deeper dimension to the music. Thanks!

  • fabulous -- thank you so much for the post. Cooley's great nephew works in our school district -- I'll send him the site.

  • incredible!!!!
