That looks like a pretty safe Yaris to me. I guess subcompacts have better safety cages this time around in 2011... Fiesta, Sonic, and perhaps this new Yaris.
Compared to the previous generation Yaris, this collison was more on the right hand side where the motor is there to protect, so the car looks more solid, but maybe isn't.
When you open the hood of the Yaris, the motor is offset towards the passenger side, giving more protection on that side.
@dorkinski I don't see how you saw that as a passenger side, but remember that they drive on the left in Japan, where this test was held. So they have had to change, if not the whole engine side, the side of the steering column, pedals, and so on for it to fit to Japan's roads.
@CarPro1993 Actually speed doesn't sum up in a linear fashion. 2 cars, both at 40MPH is still like 1 car at 40MPH hitting a wall. It has something to do with forces canceling eachother out.
looks much more safer now. solid. nice going toyota. and the crown did great aswell.

Wow the new Yaris is a lot more rugged. Still would rather be in the bigger car though.

They probably won't sell either of those cars in the US for awhile, because they are too safe and wanna screw the US govt up.

@CarPro1993
Do u happen to know if the test configuration was the same as in the IIHS test Yaris vs. Camry (and Smart vs. C-class, Jazz vs. Accord)?
andreasausmuc 7 months ago
@andreasausmuc
Closing speed of 80 Mp/h (40 Mp/h each) at a 40% overlap. So yes, it is the same.

@andreasausmuc I saw that test, looks bad. This is the new gen. Yaris. They must have changed the design.
