somehow i dont believe a fruit that stinks like skunk diahrea thats been left out in the sun for a few month to be a aphrodesiac. its smell is horrible.
I admit I'm intrigued, though I don't know how long it will be until I can track one down locally. I don't believe I've ever seen one in a store around here. Though now I'll certainly be on the lookout.
Seriously, the people in this video knows durian best. They even know which is good and which is bad. I totally respect you guys because you embrace it unlike other westerners that equals them like toilet. But the thing that bugged me the most was the style of the presentation.....Kinda peculiar and weird.....
one type of durian in malaysia called durian kampong i so like. even its not so delicoius like new breed durian but the taste so sharp n little bit bitter. other than that is one type of wild durian in the jungle that plant by villagers called durian daun. this durian small only n their color so green but the smell is so strong n too stink. durian contain protein n tiger like it n its also proven through recording camera in domuntary channel. even cat like it n some of them is really2 like it.
why don't you head down to Malaysia.... around 1 month from now you could buy fresh durians.... hehehe or you could go to rural places in malaysia that are full with durian trees and experience gettin them yourself here....Durians here are cheap during its season it around $5 - 7 dollars for 3-4 Durians!!! and you could also learn how to turn Durian into some of the famous local desserts recipe!!!
frozen durian will not taste good as the fresh durian from farm... you should go to durian farm or daily market in asia if you want to taste the sweetest durian...
I would love to try Durian someday. Unfortunately I don't know a single place in my entire province that sells fruit like this (hell, finding decent mangos that aren't rotten is an achievement in and of itself here). None of the local fruit stores I know of carry it, and the one time I asked someone in a grocery store they gave me a funny look. Do you know how I could find some of these? And how much do they cost?
What province do you live in? I'm sure they have them at an Asian grocery store in one of the larger cities. Especially is there is a large Asian population. A frozen 8 pound durian cost around $16 US. Not sure the prices in Canada.
I live in St. John's, NL. We're a pretty small province with a population of less than 1 million. I'm not sure how many asian people there are in Newfoundland exactly, but it seems to be an average amount, mostly from China. From what I understand, there is a small asian food market here but I've been told they don't have any exotic fruit. Nevertheless, I should check it out. If Durian tastes even half as good as Pitahaya, than I'm pretty certain I'll enjoy it. Thanks for the tip!
@Commandos12 Toronto. Almost every asian supermarket carries it. Even non-asian supermarket [like No Frills] would sometimes have it too (if their customers are mainly asian).
@EpsilonEagle123 I'm in Alberta and I just bought one at the Real Canadian Superstore. I'm glad I bought it.... wouldn't buy it again though. It was a pretty decent sized one, only cost about $3. It had been frozen but had thawed. Make sure that you let it thaw if it is frozen or it'll be harder to get open (just leaving it overnight would be fine).
It was surprisingly easy to open. Just look for the slit and dig in. If there's no slit, it's probably not ripe enough. Kind of smelly, creamy tho
i have few durian trees in my garden... awaiting for them to fruit... in the meantime, i buy the fresh ones every fruiting seasons..... and sometimes i buy the frozen imported ones.... love durian...
Let it thaw and carefully pull it apart with your hands. I like to simulate the durian dropping from a tree and drop it on concrete or a hard surface. That usually will get it started. I sometimes use a butchers knife when I'm impatient. The bulging sections are where the pods are. Just be careful and take your time.
vanilla banana honey garlic custard... every bite of durian is a different taste experience... I'm eating one as I type... I actually just at an entire durian by myself... I don't recommend doing that, it's like drinking alone :(
@shestudios I just bought one and it's kind of like onions, custard, coconut, vanilla, banana and... I'm not sure what. Try not to breathe in while you eat it though lol. My boyfriend wouldn't have more than a taste lol
Too funny! Hey Sav, I guess I don't have to ask how great things are in AZ. Where's the Outro vid. There's got to be a sequel to this. Or at least post a story version on a blog : )
would love to try it. would have liked a bit more instruction on how to open a durian, how to eat it (are there seeds? are they edible?) etc - just some basic 101 type stuff. but thanks for sharing!
Don't eat the seeds... now jackfruit is another story. The seeds are great sauteed in some water , oil and Nama Shoya... but I don't roll like that no mo'.

Frozen durian is really cheap in Canada. They're priced as low as 99 cents per pound. well under 10 dollars for a frozen durian.
